A lot of us have been here before. We Prepped for Brexit. Some of us are Heathcare workers. We prepare for the worst every day. It's difficult to predict what will happen in our lives. In our lifetime. Will we get Cancer? Will a huge meteorite wipe the world out?

One thing is for sure, this new virus is either affecting us, or is going to affect us all very soon. You are all already onboard. I hope you are prepared and much as you can be. And in the meantime this thread is here to support us all.

This week will bring many new challenges. We are almost certain to have some sort of lockdown. Like other parts of Europe. We aren't special. We aren't different. We are all
fragile souls. But I hope we live to tell the tale.

God Speed.

Day one and there are already gaps in the fridge. DD is being rationed fruit so it lasts.

Slavica · 17/03/2020 14:07

@preponderings, yesterday at noon out local Coop was a pandemonium - I'd never seen it this busy. I got the last package of "bio" sugar for DH's tea, there was no flour.
Today the migros (at 2 pm) was much calmer, it's also slightly bigger. Both were fine as far as fruits, veggies and milk go. The meat is sparse, but I suspect people are filling up their freezers.

itsnotjustflu · 17/03/2020 14:26

Keep checking Morrisons like a woman possessed. Still 90% out of fresh food. Come on sort it out

ooopsupsideyourhead · 17/03/2020 14:27

I accept we are well beyond the point of prepping now 😅 BUT there was quite a bit of discussion about the best way to freeze eggs a million threads back. I feel I’ve perfected it, so will share here in case anyone has more eggs than they know what to do with.

Silicone cupcake cases, in muffin tin for stability. Froze quickly and peeled out of the cases easily. Have put them all in one bag now 👌🏼

@BlackeyedSusan this is a big problem here. They (husband included) have no concept of rationing. Asking for snacks, seconds. This may be a problem.

Sprayitall · 17/03/2020 14:29

Things are getting ridiculous. Dd’s school has sent attendance email that all the attendance will be monitored and emphasis on reason of absence will be recorded clear. Those who are self isolating should do so but they will anyway put it as absence. They have started cancelling all their after school clubs and expect parents to stand atleast 2 m from each other and staffs during pick up and drop offs. (I don’t know how it’s going to work- if a parent catches the child catches it anyway and it will spread) Expecting atleast partial closures soon. They are prepping up study materials online though.

@blackeyedsusan this fridge gap and prep stock getting used up is driving me nuts.

When do you all think we should stop buying from outside?

Sprayitall · 17/03/2020 14:32

Also are produces safe from Italy? Ordered some spinach and it came from Italy which freaked out dh.m. He has asked me to stop buying it from now which I think is ridiculous (anyway we are going to wash, steam or boil it) what do you all do? does everyone dettol wipe the cover it comes in before putting it in the fridge?

itsnotjustflu · 17/03/2020 14:33

We've had my DS absence okd with a Y. I hate how schools are being so different to each other. We don't have a cough or temp

tryingtoprep · 17/03/2020 14:38

We ate some courgettes from Italy a few weeks ago. I wondered too about how safe but we seem ok. I'm guessing it's fine if you cook them and obviously it's been a few days at least since anyone but you touched the veg. Having said that I'm sticking to frozen veg for the time being. For peace of mind.

Sprayitall · 17/03/2020 14:44

@tryingtoprep what do you do for milk bottles etc. give a once over with dettol wipe before putting them in the fridge? This household chores and cleaning is draining me out already. There is no delivery slots for any of the supermarkets now. How do I even order for next week I wonder.

BlackeyedSusan · 17/03/2020 14:44

Well ds has been marked as present in school and he has gained merit points. I wish he was that good when he is actually there. Ah well.

tryingtoprep · 17/03/2020 14:48

It's all so stressful @Sprayitall I too can't get any delivery slots for next week. I mainly wanted for elderly relatives. Luckily they have nice neighbours who got them some food in.

I'm pouring milk or opening packets of food, washing hands, putting containers away, then washing hands again! Probably quicker to spray them all. I've also decanted what I can into my own jars and containers, including my never before used milk jug (it was a gift).

Mrsemcgregor · 17/03/2020 14:48

+407 cases today.

UPDATE on coronavirus (#COVID19) testing in the UK:

As of 9am 17 March 2020, a total of 50,442 people have been tested:

48,492 negative
1,950 positive

The latest confirmed number of deaths will be announced later today.

The digital dashboard will be updated later today.

BlackeyedSusan · 17/03/2020 14:49

I have wiped everything over for years now on the principle that packaging gets put on work surfaces where food is prepared.

The eat the prep phase is going to mess with my head. I have been keeping the fridge well stocked for so long that now there are gaps it is very disconcerting.

Mrsemcgregor · 17/03/2020 14:49

Fuck.

BlackeyedSusan · 17/03/2020 14:51

407 extra. Eek.

Oh and I wipe stuff down with a washing up liquid and dishcloth.

AuntImmortelle · 17/03/2020 14:52

1950! How much has that gone up by? 500?

Mrsemcgregor · 17/03/2020 14:53

Is Boris giving an update at the same time as yesterday?

BlackeyedSusan · 17/03/2020 14:53

Loose veg and fruit in nets gets washed in water and washing up liquid and rinsed.

BlackeyedSusan · 17/03/2020 14:56

It's the chancellor today. PM R4 will be on from 4pm.

I need to do something just laid about like a wet weekend.

MoonlightMistletoe · 17/03/2020 15:04

I wasn't expecting that 😞
I'm presuming there are quite a few deaths today.

Boris better start talking some sense! Cannot believe his father was on telly saying he will still go to the pub, what on earth is wrong with people.

HasaDigaEebowai · 17/03/2020 15:09

Thats a pretty big jump bearing in mind they are only testing those admitted to hospital with serious symptoms.

rhij86 · 17/03/2020 15:12

@MoonlightMistletoe yes I think the same for the number of deaths - what other reason would they have for delaying that particular bit of info

Sprayitall · 17/03/2020 15:13

@hasa I am thinking the same. +407 today and testing only those admitted in hospitals.
