Prepping for a Pandemic... 15

A lot of us have been here before. We Prepped for Brexit. Some of us are Heathcare workers. We prepare for the worst every day. It's difficult to predict what will happen in our lives. In our lifetime. Will we get Cancer? Will a huge meteorite wipe the world out?

One thing is for sure, this new virus is either affecting us, or is going to affect us all very soon. You are all already onboard. I hope you are prepared and much as you can be. And in the meantime this thread is here to support us all.

This week will bring many new challenges. We are almost certain to have some sort of lockdown. Like other parts of Europe. We aren't special. We aren't different. We are all
fragile souls. But I hope we live to tell the tale.

God Speed.

The shops will be in meltdown today

ooopsupsideyourhead · 17/03/2020 08:12

Our complete isolation has come from an unplanned source... chicken pox. DC woke up with them this morning, this does at least explain the fretful night and minor fever yesterday evening. I did not prep virasoothe. Kicking myself! DH has a list of various bits and will come home from work via a pharmacy.

I’m not due to be in work until Wednesday (teacher). I feel like we are being thrown under the bus, two of my colleagues in the last two days have come down with incredible fevers - changing the bed completely type fevers. But, it’s not just CV-19 I’m scared of, it’s that I might end up responsible for the safety of I dunno, fifty children at once. It’s an accident waiting to happen! I’d be ok with volunteering to teach the children of essential workers like my DH, but this situation is madness.

Blueberryham · 17/03/2020 08:15

Surely the schools will close to any children of non emergency service workers

MoonlightMistletoe · 17/03/2020 08:33

@Legoandloldolls Thank you for the reply, they are actually toddlers now, 18months and 2.5yo. They would be getting put to sleep for the op in two weeks which is giving me anxiety itself let alone with this going on now.
The reason I was getting it done is because my 2yo was/is speech delayed however he's come on miles in the past few months.

Readyme · 17/03/2020 08:35

In definitely coming out of this crisis with fewer friends. I'm so Angry at the patronisation from some of our friends now they have caught onto the fact we are isolating.
I'm getting bombarded with txt from them trying to 'explain the situation' to me despite the fact they know to bloody go and socialise with them I need to get a bus through our regions epicentre and my DH is vunerable.

YellowPinkie · 17/03/2020 08:42

It's amazing how many people I'm seeing saying "we should have been warned this was going to happen" and "how are we supposed to stay in for 14 days with no supplies"

Surely the other countries situations around the world was enough of a warning Hmm

84TinsOfBeans · 17/03/2020 08:47

I popped into lidls yesterday to get a bit of milk and the couple in front were buying 80 bags of plain flour. I asked what it was for a she said 'I'm making a cake'. Then she asked the cashier if they couple check the stick in other local lidls

I'm cross they were allowed to buy that much.

SharpieInThe · 17/03/2020 08:57

Prepping is finished.
Can't prep when everyone is panicking.

HasaDigaEebowai · 17/03/2020 09:03

We are completely done too. My focus is now on elderly relatives who didn't bother to do as I strongly suggested.

Readyme · 17/03/2020 09:04

@84TinsOfBeans that's shocking no one needs that much flour! My money is on them reselling. The supermarkets are partly responsible for shortage they should have started limiting weeks ago. They should also increased their orders weeks ago when it was obvious Europe was going to be hit badly.

YellowPinkie · 17/03/2020 09:05

I need to try get some milk, bread and eggs today but then I'm done.

I'm absolutely ready for us all to lock the door and stay in for as long as is needed. It's going to get crazy out there.

YoursTunbridgeWells · 17/03/2020 09:06

I am super worried about fuel supplies now. We live 8-10 miles from the shops. I have booked as far ahead as I can but I keep hearing stories of deliveries being cancelled or just a few items from a huge shop getting delivered.

If we can get fuel we may starve. OK I have enough food for a month maybe a bit longer but it won't last forever.

Readyme · 17/03/2020 09:07

@YellowPinkie yes the lack of self responsibility is stagering. Brits have no excuse we knew this was coming when Italy was hit bad.

Readyme · 17/03/2020 09:12

@YoursTunbridgeWells hopefully this is just a blip once the supermarkets readjust deliveries should start getting through. We are rural but fortunate to have a village shop.

MoonlightMistletoe · 17/03/2020 09:13

@84TinsOfBeans That explains this then!

MoonlightMistletoe · 17/03/2020 09:16

That was a fail tried to attach a pic from when I popped in to get some flour , there was just one small bag of flour that had been ripped open and it was everywhere!

Called to rearrange the appointments however the woman did say they may be cancelling the ops in the near future, so they may not go ahead anyway now.

TiddleTaddleTat · 17/03/2020 09:27

We are in isolation and once the fresh is used up I will be opening our preps.
Have Tesco deliveries booked for tomorrow and next week, we'll see if they arrive. Mainly for fresh stuff.

Sprayitall · 17/03/2020 09:42

Good morning,
My usual sainsburys order that was to arrive today doesn’t have more than half of the things. There is no andrex loo roll and it’s not even substituted with their own brand or anything. People panic buying and stockpiling is horrible. Thankfully I have one that I have ordered for business left with 9 rolls. Even the normal butter has been substituted with spreadable one . I use the butter for making ghee for cooking as it’s cheaper than buying ghee - now I can’t use spreadable ones for that. There is no potatoes or onions and dd’s fav mini poppadoms have been substituted with prawn crackers (we are Lacto-vegetarian) Baking paper was substituted with foil. (A challenge to stock rotation-ordered baking paper to replace the paper we used to bake sugar cookies over the weekend) so many things left out with no proper substitutes. I doubt we will be able to tide over as I don’t think supermarkets will have enough supplies.
For schools - The ht’s should be thankful when someone keeps their kids off at this time - sitting in a closed room with atleast 30 other children picking their noses and sneezing is so hard - think of those innocent teachers who have spent all years in training them to educate so many others. They have family and they have underlying conditions too. This is the only country where I am seeing this level of negligence and disrespect towards teachers and professors even by the government. If it was me I’m sure I can’t handle a class full of kids, grit my teeth and smile. I think it’s high time they start skeletal services at schools.

Sprayitall · 17/03/2020 09:43

@MoonlightMistletoe I had to order flour which was substituted with some spelt flour. I had to order because the one I receive a week earlier had been ripped open along its side but the flour was in there (homepride box) I still have it but is it safe to use it I wonder?

YellowPinkie · 17/03/2020 09:46

Tunbridge, our friends husband is management for a big Asda store and he says the last two petrol deliveries haven't turned up so I'd definitely fill the tank.

We filled ours last week and have no plans to drive anywhere at the moment.

Sprayitall · 17/03/2020 09:47

Ocado has a virtual que now and I am in 2015 😂 no new order dates available

rhij86 · 17/03/2020 10:00

Morning all.

I'm now in self-imposed isolation due to being pregnant, sounds like that will be govt imposed isolation shortly. I'm not too worried about tinned goods, freezer goods etc but do want to make sure we all keep getting enough fresh.

I've just started an online food order for Fri 3rd April (earliest available here) and as soon as slots open up for the following week I'll be doing a small weekly shop for fresh stuff where I can.

Hope everyone is doing ok mentally, and keeping safe.

Teaand · 17/03/2020 10:09

I am now self isolating as one of my children started with a cough and temperature. I am not worried about her at the moment as calpol has brought it down and she is happy that she is allowed to watch tv. But I have two others I have to keep occupied/educated and fed.

I have organised and prepared for this but the possible future lack of food is worrying me when my stock runs out.

I am also doing this alone as my husband works away from home so we cant spilt the responsibility.

Sorry a bit of a ramble but I need somewhere to voice my concerns.

Legoandloldolls · 17/03/2020 10:11

Lots to catch up on but I have just settled the shit out of my house.

I might try Costco at 11

Legoandloldolls · 17/03/2020 10:15

@YoursTunbridgeWells I was wondering about you. I hope your ok?

My 2ps worth is that this panic buying will die back in two weeks. Even if the whole of the UK has bought a extra freezer, there is only so much you can panic buy and store in a freezer and fridge. Plus people will run out of cash. I could spendx£1000 filling a freezer so how many have that kind of cash to spare weekly? I certainly dont
