Prepping for a Pandemic... 15

A lot of us have been here before. We Prepped for Brexit. Some of us are Heathcare workers. We prepare for the worst every day. It's difficult to predict what will happen in our lives. In our lifetime. Will we get Cancer? Will a huge meteorite wipe the world out?

One thing is for sure, this new virus is either affecting us, or is going to affect us all very soon. You are all already onboard. I hope you are prepared and much as you can be. And in the meantime this thread is here to support us all.

This week will bring many new challenges. We are almost certain to have some sort of lockdown. Like other parts of Europe. We aren't special. We aren't different. We are all
fragile souls. But I hope we live to tell the tale.

God Speed.

Show we were due to see on Thursday has been cancelled indefinitely - that’s one less decision to have to make but feel sad for all the staff and performers. My work have implemented working from home with immediate effect.

Eldest DD’s school has said they will likely need to close by the end of the week due to staff shortages - headteacher, pointedly I think, started letter with ‘despite the government wishing to keep schools open’. Another local school has shut for staffing reasons from tomorrow. In both cases they are opening for years 11 and 13. This must be happening everywhere, no?

Gammeldragz · 17/03/2020 00:28

Evening all, finally caught up on most of today's posts. Well, today has been a bit of an Oh Shit moment really. DS1(13) was off today after coughing from yesterday. Not an awful lot, but was persistent this morning. Told him he had to stay home for 7 days, then went to work. We finally had a meeting about how we are going to handle this, got everyone up to date on the current guidance and plans the CCG has for General practice (it's in the commissioning phase, so God help us all!).
By the time. I got home, the guidance had changed. Realised we are now all stuck home for next 13 days (DS1 for 6 though).
Suddenly the house felt very small and all my preparations inadequate (must be so much worse for people who hadn't prepared?). Thankful I popped into Tesco in my lunchbreak and grabbed milk and a 9 pack of loo roll (I'd been getting nervous as I hadn't bought any for about a month!). We are okay for supplies and many offers of helps from neighbours etc already. Still hard to get my head around the fact that I am now going to need to use the prepping stores.

So frustrating about testing, I'm pretty sure DS2 doesn't have Covid19, but with no testing I'm expected to isolate and that means I'm not at work. I can't risk my patients in case it is actually Covid19 and I pass it on, but if it isn't and we have to do this every time one of us has symptoms for the foreseeable future, I have no idea how the NHS will cope. We had a GP isolating today too. At least three of our regular GPs have school age children and will likely face the same issue in the next week or two.

Regarding today's social distancing announcement, I wonder when the advice is going to change from advice to more of a 'must do'. At the moment it's a little too optional and so many people will ignore it. I'm a bit of a rules person and tend to obey things I feel are in place for the benefit of society, but many don't!

Legoandloldolls · 17/03/2020 00:48

This was a big Tesco near near me. Not even sure what category of food should have been in these freezers! It was unbelievable.no fresh meat or veg in Aldi either. Every isle was decimated.

But Tesco was restocking. When I get desperate I am going to shop there at about 3-4 am.as it was clear there stock arriving.

Its next to a university so lots of docile bemused students. I told one he could wash his hands with shower gel.

Worst thing was no wipes at all and no own brand nappies.

I went into Aldi and Tesco and the only protein I could buy was three tins of lentals, one beef joint, one gammon joint, two bags of cocktail sausage and four chicken legs and they was down to the very last few. Feeding six on that would be fun. Luckily for my beans I prepped.

Legoandloldolls · 17/03/2020 00:58

I still quite calm. I'm owning what I can control and who I can help but I cant carry everyone around me. My mum and her neighbour are number one priority to try to buy for.

Then my community board as and when but the logistics of buying extra will be extremely challenging.

noodledoodler · 17/03/2020 01:39

Made a big batch of soup tonight, talked to the kids about the prepping and how I have been getting us all ready for isolation through my planned buying, that the govt advice on pandemic will affect food choices from now till things ease. Explained supply chains etc too. Went over handwashing routines and importance as well. Eldest teen is kicking back, wants to meet up with friends, doesn't understand or appreciate that I have to do 12 weeks isolation and only thinking how that impacts on them. Me? i an watching them all chow through my carefully stashed supplies like locusts and wondering how I can re stock when isolating, with a hubby in charge of getting supplies who thinks 8 skinny sausages or 8 bacon rashers are a meal for 5 massive eaters 😳

@Third day a row I haven’t been able up sleep past 4am.

Sat with tea on the sofa listening to the birdsong outside.

The emptying of fresh produce that’s being reported is really panicking me. I feel so responsible for my wider family, dm called dh last night (still couldn’t actually say it to me) to tell him that posh was right and to thank her. I wished they’d listening sooner.

The reports in the USA of people queuing up for guns was heartbreaking.

For those of us able to grow veg, let’s crack on with getting our bed variation of Lord Woolton pie!

Posharmchairs · 17/03/2020 05:56

Own variation that should say!

BlackeyedSusan · 17/03/2020 06:23

This week we will wash plant pots and get on with windowsil gardening.

I need to go down to the garage and get a bag of compost up to the flat. Or get ex to do it.

MyHipsDontLieUnfortunately · 17/03/2020 06:27

Earliest Tesco slot I can now book is Monday 13 April!

LittleSwede · 17/03/2020 06:37

Haven't been able to keep up with the threads but been on off lurking since thread 1. If I hadn't started prepping for Brexit last year and then replenishing over the last few weeks I don't think I would have slept a wink last night. So thanks again preppers.

Have been coughing since last Thursday so now trying to figure out what we eat over the next 9 days during family self isolation. Don't want to touch the tins and dried stuff so maybe start with what's in the fridge and everyday cupboard (keeping prepping stash of dry food separate). Have an ocado order due for tomorrow but not counting on it showing up. Don't want to use my long life milk yet so the milk in the fridge is for DD only now and I'll have cream in my coffee.

Look after yourselves Brew

itsnotjustflu · 17/03/2020 06:42

Another one not sleeping here. I'm just incredulous that because my asthma nor my son's isn't chronic we have no right to keep him off school. We are supposed to carry on as normal and risk our lives for Bojos experiment. Well I'm sorry but I can't do that. Also gutted Morrisons are continually out of stock of fresh food etc. We just wanted some fresh food in the fridge. I'm not surprised but I'd have thought things would come back in stock

MoonlightMistletoe · 17/03/2020 07:04

Morning all,

Both my little ones are supposed to have a pre op later this morning however I'm feeling nervous about going into a hospital setting especially as there are cases in the area. It's not life threatening problems simply just to get their tongue ties sorted out and the actual op is next week.

It took me so long to get these appointments but now I feel they aren't as important than risking the health of my children and the people around me, what would you do go ahead or cancel/rearrange?

Newjez · 17/03/2020 07:08

I haven't read the thread yet, that is today's job.

But have people considered what they would do if they lost gas, electric or water for an extended period?

Most of us would go mad without the internet, but we need to ensure we can entertain ourselves without it. Also we should have some water for cooking, cleaning and drinking, plus an alternative method of cooking such as a BBQ.

You will also need to be prepared to eat the contents of your freezer if it thaws.

Not sure how likely this is, but if we have a storm and energy workers are sick or isolating.

Blueberryham · 17/03/2020 07:10

There must be real risk of food shortages over the coming months. I wonder how likely it is the whole system implodes

Blueberryham · 17/03/2020 07:16

I just looked up that imperial college modelling for covid19. I haven’t read through the whole thing. Is anyone better at understanding the graphs. One seem to show another massive surge in November?

HasaDigaEebowai · 17/03/2020 07:18

I managed to get a food delivery for my elderly in laws this morning. I think it was a cancellation slot since one minute there was nothing for weeks and then suddenly one popped up. At least I thought I'd got them a slot. I've just had an email to say what is arriving and most of it is unavailable. No bread, milk, eggs, cheese, soup, crackers, biscuits and no frozen meat or vegetables (which given that its an iceland delivery is saying something) Sad. Not sure what the next move is since FiL is 87 and has cancer and Mil is 79. I suspect we'll have to drive there with some of our own food but we are in 14 day self isolation due to coughs. We can leave it in their garden though and they can then go and get it once we've gone.

@Neome did a good summary of the report on a very early thread. Either this one or the 'worried about coronavirus' one.

VenetoResident · 17/03/2020 07:33

VenetoResident and I mad of does make 13% death rate of tested cases

@Legoandloldolls I don't even bother thinking about % death rates. They're not testing unless you are admitted to hospital.

But... Veneto is hoping to massively increase testing rate. So case numbers will increase but hopefully death rates will come down.

Yesterday individuals swabbed was:

35000 Veneto
43500 Lombardy

But I think Lombardy's population is 10 million against Veneto's 4 million.

@preponderings - I'd expect DH to work in the bedroom with earplugs. Is buying a new computer an option? We're prioritising DC1 with GCSEs coming up.

Our cycle paths got really busy but they've said no leisure cycling now due to increased accident risk - can't strain A&E. Short walks only.

@nightshade1 - we ran out of biscuits in week 2....

@RhubarbTea I read a good summary of that report on Twitter. Not good reading.

https://twitter.com/kakape/status/1239694176066965505?s=21

@HasaDiga - you might find the Twitter thread easier to understand?

@Graphista - Really scary, but it's a good message to get out because some people we know will have to go through it. Sad

Exochord · 17/03/2020 07:34

Tesco is supposed to deliver today but is showing no stock of chicken, fish, pork, sausage, mince, bread, pasta, rice, eggs, beans, soup, tomatoes, shower gel or any other soap... Hope my order got picked early before everything went. No wonder people are stockpiling everything they can get their hands on.

Slavica · 17/03/2020 07:50

Hi everyone, I've been following since thread 1 but am de-lurking now.

@preponderings, I am also in CH - BS. I am still going to work, but my DH is teaching from home (private school) and my DD (late primary, state school) is watching entirely too much tv, as there are no instructions from the school yet. I've been doing some math with her before I go to work, but it is very little.

I am worried about people who, for whatever reason, don't cook but haven't set up food delivery from the places that are allowed to stay open - such as food service for the elderly - and have been relying on restaurants. Restaurants have been ordered to shut starting today, no delivery, nothing.

Being used to going to Germany for groceries and now no longer able to go feels strange. I prepped, these days we buy milk, fruits and veggies only, but psychologically, knowing I am not allowed to go, it feels very weird.

Legoandloldolls · 17/03/2020 07:51

@MoonlightMistletoe how old are the kids? Are you breastfeeding them?
If your breastfeeding I would do the OP as formula might get hard to buy.
Look up the age at which they will feel pain ( before x weeks they feel nothing - there of mine had it done before two weeeks)
If they have heart shaped tounge whennthey poke it out then I'd say yes as well

Legoandloldolls · 17/03/2020 07:52

What the hell will today bring? I was going to try Costco but I dont think I want to now
