Prepping for a pandemic 2

wheresmymojo · 04/02/2020 23:38

Second thread on prepping for a potential Coronavirus pandemic...following the latest news and information as well as prepping info.

When quoting estimates like mortality rates, replication rates, incubation periods and similar I try to stick to evidence based, scientific studies and will link to sources (unless already linked to them previously).

Generally speaking I use reputable sources of information like well regarded news outlets for other information and will provide links.

Sometimes I may post things outside of this as 'interesting' or such like. I will always caveat these as to be taken with caution.

As much as possible I am attempting not to link to fake news. It's an evolving picture so may not be 100% successful but if something is later shown to be incorrect I will post a correction.

The worldometers website has updated its reporting format.

Now showing 18% of those affected are in a serious or critical condition. Deaths in 21% of those cases with a confirmed outcome.

ofwarren · 10/02/2020 11:31

What was the percentage before the update?

HasaDigaEebowai · 10/02/2020 11:34

It wouldn't have been dramatically different its just a different way of reporting the figures that is more helpful but clearly indicates a potentially high death rate (or alternatively, if the WHO circa 2-3% figure is correct that there are WAY more cases than the official stats show)

You can buy two lots of ibuprofen and paracetamol at the same time.

ofwarren · 10/02/2020 11:58

Signs in home bargains today saying you can only buy 2 of either paracetamol, ibuprofen or aspirin. I went to the till with a Calpol, a paracetamol and and ibuprofen and I had to put one back.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 10/02/2020 12:04

Unfortunately Tesco don’t know the difference and only permit you to buy two packets in total. 🙄 It’s so bloody annoying, if you’re alternating them cough.

bellinisurge · 10/02/2020 12:08

@IHaveSeenTheFuture , prepping should help you be less anxious. And so if it isn't helping your anxiety, I strongly recommend stepping away from it and possibly going to speak to your GP.

maths not your strong point?

To everyone, face masks, while they look like a solution are not a substitute for good hand washing skills. I know it sounds mad "hand washing skills" but if you want to do something positive, check you and yours are doing it correctly.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 10/02/2020 12:12

That’s worrying HasaDigaEebowal and would explain why so many countries are taking these unprecedented steps. I do wonder though, if many people are self treating because of the heavy handed way people are being dragged from their homes, in China and forced into quarantine, before they’re even diagnosed? I would go into hiding before I’d let my daughter and me be put into one of their quarantine wards. They’re basically dieting rooms, as the risk of a healthy person being infected from the people they’re sharing with, is so high!

@pelliroco123

Erm fairly good. A level maths, degree level stats. I have literally lifted those figures from the website. Thanks for the extreme rudeness though Hmm

HasaDigaEebowai · 10/02/2020 12:26

current officially reported cases (slightly updated since last post)

36191 infected
29697 of those mild
6494 serious or critical (18%)

Cases with outcomes (recovered/dead) 4458
discharged or recovered - 3548
Dead 910 (20%)

In December when I was on chemotherapy DC1 (23) got flu. He lives alone and came home, it was proper flu not a cold. We all did the proper hand washing, gel in every room, door handles disinfected frequently and I made him wear a face mask.

Chinese government has form for lying. I would add zeros onto every statistic the admit to.

GothMummy · 10/02/2020 12:54

The stronger language about forcibly quarentining people has alarmed me. Is this another scenario that we need to prep for? Eg, a grab bag with essentials (medications? Phone chargers, books/hobby things) to sustain you for 2 weeks in a government facility?

wellididntseethatcoming · 10/02/2020 13:07

With this being a preppers thread, the possibility of this becoming endemic has me wondering if it's worth staying in and riding it out at all.
Just a question. I did a big shop a few weeks ago and I've got about a 2 month supply of toilet roll, bleach, dettol and food.
Would it be better to carry on as usual even if it was in my school and locality and continue to go to the shops and get out as much as possible? On the basis that if it's endemic and we're going to have to catch it at some point, wouldn't I rather get it now before the hospitals become completely overwhelmed?
They say it's no worse than the flu so would it be better to try and catch it early and build a natural immunity?

Dyrne · 10/02/2020 13:08

I haven’t taken the “forcibly quarantined” wording as “we will take you from your homes and put you in a facility” just yet. I think at this stage it is more to keep people that need it from discharging themselves from quarantine against medical advice. I may be wrong, but normally unless you are being Sectioned under the mental health act you can refuse all medical care - even if you’re sitting there with your arm off you can still refuse treatment.

This new announcement closes that loophole and means they can force you to stick to a quarantine.

A grab bag might still be a good idea in case you go for treatment and test positive, otherwise you’re stuck there!

I’ work for a utility and so would probably be asked to keep working - maybe retasked to a more front line role. In a way it would be a relief as I would be likely to recover quickly if infected; but wouldn’t really recover as well financially from a long time off without pay!

wellididntseethatcoming · 10/02/2020 13:08

Also just asking incase anybody here has any info, (I've never really pumped or stored milk before but I've been breastfeeding for 9 months now). If I pump and freeze milk for future use, will the antibodies in it be as beneficial for protecting baby from bugs as they would be fresh from the boob?

Dyrne · 10/02/2020 13:09

wellididntseethatcoming unfortunately if you get it once you can still be reinfected again - it doesn’t necessarily confer immunity.

zen1 · 10/02/2020 13:19

Meanwhile, Nigeria is dealing with another ‘mystery disease’ which has already left 15 people dead. www.independent.co.uk/news/world/africa/nigeria-disease-mystery-virus-deaths-benue-state-abba-moro-a9325806.html

That's not good. where did you read that? Usually you develop resistance from a virus.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 10/02/2020 13:25

They say it's no worse than the flu so would it be better to try and catch it early and build a natural immunity?

If it’s no worse than the flu, why are the governments across the world taking the unprecedented steps of closing borders to certain visitors and forcing people into quarantine? A recent study has also suggested that catching it once may not make you immune to catching it again. Keep your stock and continue to do your every day shopping until circumstances change.

Welltroddenpath · 10/02/2020 13:29

I went out this morning, my freezer is full now so I will just focus on rotating that. I have stocked up on calpol, ibuprofen and paracetamol so no need to go out in a panic to find empty shelves.

I’m not so worried about catching it, that seems inevitable really. I’m more worried that me and dh will be ill and no one to care for / feed kids. I feel a lot relaxed prepping for that.

However I did get some basics for grab bags if any of us did need medical care. In my experience with four births you could only get painkillers during the drug trolly run. I remember one I had been readdmitted with possible pre eclampsia with a killer headache. No one gave me painkillers. I’m not risking that! I think a list in a empty bag with supplies close by to pack is ok.

Plus I’m also splitting medicines around the house today. All it takes is one headache by ds16 and I could be back to nothing
