Prepping for a pandemic 2

wheresmymojo · 04/02/2020 23:38

Second thread on prepping for a potential Coronavirus pandemic...following the latest news and information as well as prepping info.

When quoting estimates like mortality rates, replication rates, incubation periods and similar I try to stick to evidence based, scientific studies and will link to sources (unless already linked to them previously).

Generally speaking I use reputable sources of information like well regarded news outlets for other information and will provide links.

Sometimes I may post things outside of this as 'interesting' or such like. I will always caveat these as to be taken with caution.

As much as possible I am attempting not to link to fake news. It's an evolving picture so may not be 100% successful but if something is later shown to be incorrect I will post a correction.

The issue with the numbers from Thailand and Cambodia is that they are quite low compared to the number expected given the volume of travel to and from China.

Neither country has, from memory, made any attempt to ban incoming visitors from mainland China because of the degree to which they rely on Chinese tourism/labour/business.

Many suspect the actual numbers to be much higher but this is (of course) unsubstantiated.

Still not too high, that was meant to say.

wheresmymojo · 10/02/2020 15:01

@StrippedDownToTheBone

Do you tend to have health anxiety?

I mean this is the nicest possible way but we aren't at the stage where people need to lose sleep over this IMO.

Specifically what are you most worried about? Are you / a loved one in a high risk category?

I would only keep my kids off school in extreme circumstances. When bird flu was doing the rounds half ds caught it ( supposedly I doubt they did) there was 15 kids left in a class of 30. Only my dh got ill. Ds16 is prepping for GCSEs so it’s really important he goes in. We live in a school with Foreign National students from all over the world and dh couldn’t work from home. So keeping the kids off seems pointless with super spreaders.

wheresmymojo · 10/02/2020 15:12

There is also a community centre in Hove that has been closed for the time being as the so called 'super spreader' had a yoga for runners class there before he knew he was ill.

PHE certainly seem to be all over tracing and following up with any contacts.

Not related to Coronavirus but good to share to hammer home the hand washing message..

@SaltLampBae myself and a couple of others on this thread have medically vulnerable children, for whom even regular flu would be life threatening. I can't say how I'd be feeling about this if my kids had regular immunity and generally good health...

Oh of course, sorry - didn't mean to suggest I thought anybody was being silly. I'd do it in your circumstances too, 100%.

HasaDigaEebowai · 10/02/2020 15:31

I think the issue with school and children catching it is that whilst children might typically tend to have milder symptoms, they can easily pass it on to others. They are in very close proximity to one another, they typically have lower levels of hygiene and they are more likely to touch other people than adults.

I probably would keep my DC off school yes TBH. Ive heard back from the DCs school and they've said they're meeting about it later and hope things will become clearer over half term week so that they can decide what, if anything, to do.

Very interesting and reassuring. Didn't make the link between this and say, chickenpox - where children fare much better than adults. Thank you. Going to update my Ocado order now with loads of cupboard things and medications etc.

HasaDigaEebowai · 10/02/2020 15:36

A school in Southampton has been closed due to cases. I suspect the spread will now happen quickly.

wheresmymojo · 10/02/2020 15:54

I believe Southampton school are not confirmed cases though...so could come back with negative test results and re-open.

OP posts:
FourTeaFallOut · 10/02/2020 15:55

Are those cases suspected or confirmed *ha

HasaDigaEebowai · 10/02/2020 15:56

Local news in southampton is saying a family with children in the prep and the senior school have now tested positive and been isolated. The school has closed for the rest of the week.

HasaDigaEebowai · 10/02/2020 15:58

St Mary's school in Bitterne. Its an independent and the family travelled recently.

HasaDigaEebowai · 10/02/2020 15:59

actually yes you can google the announcement from the school and it doesn't actually say they've tested positive, just that they've been tested and isolated.

FourTeaFallOut · 10/02/2020 15:59

That's not great. Thanks HasaBigaEebowai

SlayB · 10/02/2020 16:01

@BlackeyedSusan What is Ducky ? Re medicines it is much better to let a fever do it's work then take Calpol etc.

MissusMaker · 10/02/2020 16:02

Well I'm actually pleased that the school has closed after a student (family) has been tested, not waiting for the result first. I hope our school does similar if it happened, ok it might still be too late but it sounds like they are doing what they can.

AmelieTaylor · 10/02/2020 16:03

They will only sell you two of anything in the ‘group’ around here. But we have 3 chemists, 5 small supermarkets & several small shops within 3 miles. Besides if I was going to end it all, it wouldn’t be with pills!!🙄

AmelieTaylor · 10/02/2020 16:05

Oops sorry, bit late to the party with that, I hadn’t refreshed my screen!

quirrels · 10/02/2020 16:22

Lots on TV about using hand gel as part of infection control. Am I being dim but I thought hand gel was anti bacterial not anti viral?

HasaDigaEebowai · 10/02/2020 16:23

It can reduce transmission of viruses if it has a high enough alcohol content.

Alternatively you could buy a bottle of nail varnish remover/surgical spirits/rubbing alcohol and use that.

BlackeyedSusan · 10/02/2020 16:23

Ducky was the first part of a previous poster's name.

If I were in Brighton, I would want to keep my child home. Whether I would risk the wrath of school, not sure. If they were already ill, with mild cough, cold etc, I would err on the side of caution and keep them in.

ofwarren · 10/02/2020 16:23

The alcohol in hand gel kills viruses too. It has to have a high alcohol content.
