Prepping for a pandemic 2

wheresmymojo · 04/02/2020 23:38

Second thread on prepping for a potential Coronavirus pandemic...following the latest news and information as well as prepping info.

When quoting estimates like mortality rates, replication rates, incubation periods and similar I try to stick to evidence based, scientific studies and will link to sources (unless already linked to them previously).

Generally speaking I use reputable sources of information like well regarded news outlets for other information and will provide links.

Sometimes I may post things outside of this as 'interesting' or such like. I will always caveat these as to be taken with caution.

As much as possible I am attempting not to link to fake news. It's an evolving picture so may not be 100% successful but if something is later shown to be incorrect I will post a correction.

Just read that the Gov are thinking about stopping travellers from China entering UK NEXT WEEK! WTAF?

Do it NOW! god this Gov has been so incompetent in the handling of all this

HasaDigaEebowai · 08/02/2020 10:30

I think it should happen now but I guess they are trying to give British ex pats as much time as possible to organise their affairs and get out.

I do think all leisure travel should be stopped though. There are still people on the general threads saying they're due to go on holiday to Hong Kong for example and they're planning on going because otherwise they'll lose their money Confused. Surely you'd rather lose your money than potentially die or expose your loved ones to the risk of dying.

HasaDigaEebowai · 08/02/2020 10:30

TBH if it is airborne which is now suspected, then I wouldn't want my family anywhere near an airport at the moment wherever they were going on holiday.

wellididntseethatcoming · 08/02/2020 10:36

Are the goggles redundant now if it's airborne?
I do agree that mentally being stuck there would be much like being a prisoner and it might have an awful impact on your mental health if it went on that long.

Also re the cruise ships. What happens if the staff become ill. Surely then they are up shit creek without a paddle and will have to evacuate.

wellididntseethatcoming · 08/02/2020 10:37

Also I'm assuming if the gov are talking about stopping flights that that excludes repatriated brits?

ShanghaiDiva · 08/02/2020 10:50

Yes, what about repatriated Brits?
Australian nationals from China can still enter Australia. I am flying from HK next week. For those who want to ban flights from HK and China.. Where do you expect me to go? I am a British citizen.

HasaDigaEebowai · 08/02/2020 10:52

So the british in France who have been diagnosed were all in the same ski chalet (all 11 now hospitalised, four confirmed so far). So that's likely to mean the chalet staff also infected and loads of others potentially exposed (airport, transfer, bars and restaurants in the area, staff in other chalets since they all socialise).

This is why people need to be sensible and stop travelling.

HasaDigaEebowai · 08/02/2020 10:54

Personally I think leisure travel and business travel should be stopped since its non essential but that british citizens should be able to return to Britain if they want to.

FourTeaFallOut · 08/02/2020 10:57

Plus the case out in Majorca says that the Brit was infected by a person recently confirmed with in France. I suppose it's not out of the bounds of reason to think they may be linked.

HasaDigaEebowai · 08/02/2020 11:00

Meanwhile, around 150 Britons on the next UK government flight back from Wuhan will be taken to a conference centre in Milton Keynes for a 14-day quarantine.
Milton Keynes University Hospitals NHS Trust said there was no risk to local people as anyone showing symptoms would not be allowed to board the plane.

This is interesting. So if you have symptoms you are stuck in China, British or not.

TheABC · 08/02/2020 11:01

"After the Wuhan lockdown, all hospitals had to deal with patients with coronavirus infections, people with other issues had no place to see doctors. Now I can only pray my parents don’t get sick, and can overcome this difficult period.”

Direct quote from an Australian repatriate (Guardian).

This is what really concerns me. The coronovirus could indeed be mild, but the rapid spread and required support for the group that get severely ill from it will tie up a lot of resources. Our NHS is already overstretched and understaffed with long ambulance waits: how much worse could it get?

The dark part of me wonders what will happen to the dementia patients who are waiting on a social services discharge in a hospital with suspected coronovirus cases.

Lweji · 08/02/2020 11:02

This is the famous preppers thread about the new coronavirus, then. It was recommended that I came here but not so sure I belong here. Unless the pp who recommended it thought I'd knock some sense into pps here.

Ban all travel? The likelihood of having someone on a given plane with the actual virus is slim and as seen so far it's possible to contain small outbreaks outside China.

OTOH, stopping all trips would have a major impact economically but also in people's lives.

It would have to be for several months at least, assuming China eventually controls it.

The effects could be much worse than a pandemic.

ofwarren · 08/02/2020 11:03

Just done a huge shop to top up my stash. Plenty of tins and packets, pet food, toilet roll, cleaning products.
I'm not even attempting to get masks. I have 4 of the holy grail ones with the filters that I had from when my son was ill last year. They are still in the packet so ill keep them for emergencies.

HasaDigaEebowai · 08/02/2020 11:04

Nobody said ban all travel. We're perfectly sensible here thank you very much

AvocadoOwl · 08/02/2020 11:06

How noble of you to come on here and enlighten us with your infinite wisdom @Lweji 🙄

HasaDigaEebowai · 08/02/2020 11:11

The discussion was about stopping non essential (leisure and business) travel from China. The impact of that on people's lives is not worse than a pandemic Hmm

wellididntseethatcoming · 08/02/2020 11:11

@shanghai I'm assuming you would be fine to come back. Is it here you are flying to?
@hasadigaeebowai does it say where the ski chalet was? My brother and his partner came back last week from a few weeks in a french ski chalet. I'll give them a wide berth

FourTeaFallOut · 08/02/2020 11:11

Between this thread and the previous thread there are over 1600 posts, could you run a quick tally on how many posters here have said that lweji or just fuck off, whichever you prefer.

Lweji · 08/02/2020 11:11

Ok... Not all the travel. Grin

But close.

Just read that the Gov are thinking about stopping travellers from China entering UK NEXT WEEK! WTAF?

China is a major supplier to Europe and not only.
Isolating China worldwide would have a massive impact.

People still find ways to travel, though. And it would be harder to keep an eye on travellers. They'd just lie.

Ps- should the UK prevent UK nationals from entering too?

ShanghaiDiva · 08/02/2020 11:12

Ban travel to China ?
Am not sure anyone is travelling there at the moment, except for Chinese returning after the CNY holiday. Cathay has dramatically cut its service between HK and the mainland, new HK quarantine rules will dramatically reduce the number of mainland visitors and flights to my city, for example, have been reduced from 14 per week to none (this is with Cathay)
I would hope people would have the sense not to travel there, even on business.

ifonly4 · 08/02/2020 11:13

stopping all trips would have a major impact economically but also in people's lives

Perhaps, I'm selfish but keeping my family, friends and work colleague well and alive is more important than economics and lifestyle. Even more selfish, I've had pneumonia twice and it isn't pleasant struggling to get enough air in and when you do it hurts, and I don't want anything like it again.

Lweji · 08/02/2020 11:16

I was actually invited to come here. Grin
Just came across it on active threads.
Really can't be arsed to read both threads and got what I expected to find in the latest posts.
Some pps here do need a reality check.

ShanghaiDiva · 08/02/2020 11:17

Yes, am coming back to Uk. When I fly back I will have been out of Mainland China for over 14 days so no self quarantine.

HasaDigaEebowai · 08/02/2020 11:18

Ski resort was Contamines-Montjoie. The transfer buses drop off at various resorts though typically..

FourTeaFallOut · 08/02/2020 11:18

No, of course you couldn't. It was easier to scan for what you were looking for so you could disparage everyone on the board.
