Prepping for a pandemic 2

wheresmymojo · 04/02/2020 23:38

Second thread on prepping for a potential Coronavirus pandemic...following the latest news and information as well as prepping info.

When quoting estimates like mortality rates, replication rates, incubation periods and similar I try to stick to evidence based, scientific studies and will link to sources (unless already linked to them previously).

Generally speaking I use reputable sources of information like well regarded news outlets for other information and will provide links.

Sometimes I may post things outside of this as 'interesting' or such like. I will always caveat these as to be taken with caution.

As much as possible I am attempting not to link to fake news. It's an evolving picture so may not be 100% successful but if something is later shown to be incorrect I will post a correction.

Absolute and total conjecture but I guess there's a chance that the Brighton person is one of the many that commute to London everyday since they obviously work for an international company.

I'm not saying they do - just conjecture. I'm sure Brighton might have some offices of international companies but a lot of people in that kind of job take the train to London everyday.

@Parker231

No one is panicking - it's about being alert enough to make sensible decisions in a sensible timeline.

In Wuhan the virus is doubling every 6.4 days.

I'm not saying it would do the same here as there may be many factors that adjust that but if it did then 20 people spread the virus to thousands in a week.

And yes, life carries on. But it's important to know when to take preventative measures, especially for those that are immunocomprised or have loved ones that are.

That isn't fear, that's racism

...and idiocy.

Correcting my post to Parker

"20 people spread the virus to thousands in a week."

Should be:

"20 people could spread the virus to thousands in a couple of weeks"

www.eventbrite.com/e/skifts-2020-travel-megatrends-event-singapore-tickets-83434010371# this company called skift had a conference there at that time. They have a London office.

TipseyTorvey · 06/02/2020 19:30

My intl large Corp has sent an email and now banned all travel to China and se Asia for the moment. Very cautiously worded email. No panic, nothing to see here, we're just being cautious. Sensible but makes me think prepping is also cautious and sensible. Will get more stuff in.

MissusMaker · 06/02/2020 19:36

Wow just seen they are advising anyone who has travelled to various countries in the last 14 days to self isolate if they develop symptoms. DH returned from one of those countries just shy of 3 weeks ago - he does have mild cold symptoms including a cough but we have young kids so all pretty much infectious all winter. Presumably since he is past the 14 days he doesn't have to worry? He is atm on a long haul flight home (from a country not on the list) so I REALLY hope he hasn't got anything so no doubt he will be infecting the rest of the plane Confused

Dyrne · 06/02/2020 19:37

Parker231 I think we could easily get to a point where people start panic buying causing shortages. We’ve already seen it with masks.

In 2012 we caused our own fuel crisis when people over-reacted to a possible Strike action and panic bought all the fuel, creating shortages.

Every time there is so much as a hint of snow forecast here in the SE the local shops are swept clear of bread and milk.

Likewise every Christmas & Easter when the big shops shut for all of 24 hours - people clear the shelves in some areas!

We are a nation of panic buyers.

ofwarren · 06/02/2020 19:37

Where is this list of countries? I've not seen it yet

BlackeyedSusan · 06/02/2020 19:38

Aren't we just

Destinysdaughter · 06/02/2020 19:44

GorkyMcPorky yes I'm following him and have seen the stuff he's posted ( and other things which are v disturbing). I don't know whether I should post things I've seen on Twitter on here as I don't want to scaremonger ( and also you can't authenticate it ) but also feel like I want pp to know what's going on. What do others think, especially pp who aren't on Twitter?

ofwarren · 06/02/2020 19:44

Found the list of countries now

Wuhan are taking the temperature of every person every day Shock

That's a lot of calls!

"As of today Wuhan will proceed with a temperature measure of every single resident. Everyday, each person is to report their temperature via phone or SMS. Those unable to do so will instead be visited by government workers to have their temperature taken for them. Individuals showing fever or other symptoms will be arranged by the neighbourhood committee to visit the local health service center for more detailed test. Based on the result any suspected cases will be quarantined centrally or put into hospital for isolaton. Should anyone refuse to cooperate, the police will be used to comple cooperation"

I mean no country could handle this shit like China....there just wouldn't be the infrastructure.

Can you imagine the temperature of every resident of London being taken every day, the Govt being able to work out who hadn't complied and having the number of police required to compel them?

I found out recently that an area close to me (Surrey Heath) of 90,000 people has a max of 7 police officers on duty at any one time. Imagine if they had to compel people to take daily temperature readings...

OP posts:
FourTeaFallOut · 06/02/2020 20:01

Add to that, we're not the most compliant bunch. Half the people would outright refuse and the other half would be asking a lot of questions about how the data was being stored and how it would be used.

As I work in the field of emergency preparedness, I can assure that plenty is happening on a constant basis from Uk government. There is much ado with this, for 2 weeks now there is a constant shift of various actions being done by local resilience forums and planning areas.

I think it’s widely unfair to state that. The guidance issued for this is led by health rightfully so - DH and PHE. It’s slow as there’s nothing to report.

Curious... just searched for Skift on Twitter, and it comes back with them having an article in the New York Times about why the travel ban is unjust and how it doesn't work anyway. They appear to be a travel news magazine reporting on business trends in the tourist industry. They've written tonnes of articles in the last fortnight about the impact of ncov in the Asia-Pacific region.

Pretty damned ironic if they ARE the ones at the heart of the outbreak in and from Singapore (not wishing that on anyone, by the way).
