Prepping for pandemic...

I was quite blasé about the novel corona virus outbreak but things I've read today have changed my mind.

I'm not usually a prepper but best things to stock up on for a pandemic?

Surgical face masks?
Latex gloves?
Anti bac wipes and hand wash?

Parker This is a preppers topic so most posters will be, by nature, catasrophisers and will stress despite evidence to the contrary

I am not saying that this virus will not become an issue, just that this board isnt the place to look for rational responses

PMSL and yet here you are Grin

*That's not what prepping is about btw.

MissusMaker · 29/01/2020 15:51

@isthepopea that is helpful thanks, I'm happy to donate to the food bank so I will get in a few tins of veg to keep us going - that's the only thing that we wouldn't otherwise use.

HuggedTrees · 29/01/2020 15:58

Tesco was sold out of bottled water today for delivery, couldn’t add it.

Screw fix people have twigged on the FP3 and sold out here and for delivery.

Also the hand gels have gone online.

Cambridge mask company people have had their best sales ever 😂 Have ordered from the US.

Also disposable surgical masks are better than nothing.

Happy brexit week 😂

wheresmymojo · 29/01/2020 16:17

@Parker231

We're not suggesting wearing masks now. This is a preppers thread it's about preparing for the possibility of an epidemic here.

By which time you won't be able to buy masks...most of them are already sold out.

and to think everyone was worried about Brexit panic buying. Who'd have thought this may have taken its place...

SleepWarrior · 29/01/2020 16:27

What would anyone plan to do if, say, a case was confirmed in their kids' school or close by?

Unless the policy is to close the school (which it may or may not be depending on how this plays out) any staying home as a precaution would presumably be an unauthorised absence that would get fined. Would you just take the cost on the chin? Would you send them in and hope for the best?

Before it gets quite bad here (if it does, hopefully not!) there's likely to be a point where some people are wanting to take more risk averse measures than others, such as avoiding school or work. Those could be rather expensive if it isn't the official course of action...

If it becomes widespread in my city I plan to keep my daughter home from school (no fines here) and DH can work from home for a while. We have enough food and water for a couple of weeks at least and I'm slowly stocking up more supplies just in case.

MissusMaker · 29/01/2020 16:36

I'd be prepared to pay a fine if I thought my children were at risk but I think making that decision would be tough. Not if there is a case in their school, that's a no brainier but if cases start to appear in the UK then at some point you have to make a decision - leave it too late and it's probably pointless to isolate, do it too early and you miss school/work/social opportunities for no reason.

SleepWarrior · 29/01/2020 16:37

I would too, but wasn't sure if I was being ott!

Also, dry American style pancake mix in a big bag is a great store cupboard food. Contains eggs and milk so it's useful nutritionally in place of fresh eggs and milk, but you just add water to cook.

SleepWarrior · 29/01/2020 16:43

Yes, it's the precise point at which to make that call to stay in isolation despite not being sick that is so hard.

twitter.com/GreatGameIndia (a Journal on Geopolitics & International Relations)

Only read the first two pages, but a post reminded me of this. My DH sent me the link a few days ago, and we were giggling about conspiracy theorists etc. I have no knowledge of Great Game India at all, but their tweets seem to suggest biological espionage. It is a bit "doom-porn" ish, so I'll leave it lying there and walk away.

BlackeyedSusan · 29/01/2020 17:14

Soap and water while out and about, can non of you remember when your mum used to pack a wet soapy flannel in a sponge bag?

Wet kitchen roll and soap in a sandwich bag?

I have Milton hand gel in my Brexit stash. Crown Grin

CrapTVAddict · 29/01/2020 17:15

How are people getting food in China?
Most social media posts show deserted streets but how are people getting food?
I feel for the people locked down wondering if food is going to run out.

FromEden · 29/01/2020 17:30

By all accounts the supermarkets are well stocked and supplies are still entering. None of the posts I have seen seem too worried about the food situation

onalongsabbatical · 29/01/2020 17:30

BlackeyedSusan dedicated flannel carrier, me. Never bought wipes. Never knowingly seen without a flannel...Grin

FromEden · 29/01/2020 17:31

To add, from what I gather, most apartment buildings have a grocery store on the bottom so residents are able to go there for food if they dont want to venture out too far. But they are allowed to walk outside to shop

ThePlatypusAlwaysTriumphs · 29/01/2020 17:39

Have they said if antiviral drugs are any use ?(although I'm guessing all my human med suppliers will have none available for general sale at this point!!)

Keeping the tradition alive onalong. Yay.

If you look on the Brexit Board and search for Hell is ever closer- part two, it has a list compiled of what everyone was stocking up on pre Brexit. Not that any one person bought everything, but a list to help you remember stuff you might need. Not all of it is relevant for Corona virus.

There was also a thread about a first aid kit which had lots of good ideas. Maybe more relevant.

MissPoldark · 29/01/2020 17:52

Have they said if antiviral drugs are any use ?

They have been using some anti virals that are intended for HIV.

I'm allergic to rubbing alcohol...so if you see a giant eczema patch with a sanitary towel over its face you know it's me Grin

NaturalBornWoman · 29/01/2020 18:32

Well I've got some masks but were £££. Screwfix were out of P3 masks in all stores near me and out of stock for delivery too. I also got hand sanitizer gel, apparently it works if it's over 70% alcohol, and also rubbing alcohol spray. I've started to compile an online shopping basket but it's difficult as we really only eat fresh food usually so I'm dithering about pressing the button on a load of tinned and long life stuff we'd only eat in an emergency.
