Family thinks I’m overreacting

Whilst they expect some supply chain delays around Brexit, both my DH and sister think that my stockpiling plans are OTT.

We have plenty of storage space, which helps, as I’d planned for 8 weeks worth of food. However, we’d never usually eat tinned food (at the moment I only use tinned tomatoes and coconut milk), so they think I’m being a bit daft to buy in sardines/spam/beans/tinned fruit etc. I’m basing my shopping list on the Tin Can lady (Jack).

Realistically how many weeks/months are you stockpiling for? I suppose whatever we don’t use could be donated to the food bank.

Anyone else facing similar cynicism from their family?

I'm not a prepper. I understand why some people want to stockpile and I can see the logic.

But surely you only stockpile things you'll actually use? What's the point in stockpiling spam, tinned sardines and other stuff when you're not eating that at the moment? Wouldn't it make more sense to just buy a fuckton of pasta and those stir in sauces, beans, packets of cereal... stuff which you're eating anyway?

tellmewhenthespaceshiplands · 20/01/2019 14:13

Macarena think that's what I'll do. For tea tonight we're having tinned hot dogs to decide if they could go in the stash!

Whisky2014 · 20/01/2019 14:20

Why would you buy spam?! Gads.

HolySwearingCuss · 20/01/2019 14:25

Pretty sure that's what people are doing @MacarenaFerreiro, don't think I've seen anything else advocated here.

Sometimes there's a a "what lasts the longest or what have I forgotten" sort of list though!

MacarenaFerreiro · 20/01/2019 14:28

OP says she only ever uses tinned tomatoes but is filling her cupboards with spam and sardines...

I'd like to think you'd get a better class of looter with tinned asparagus!

Those middle class thugs can be rather frightening, what with threatening to swat one with their louis vuitton, old chap!

That sounds like a meal that the devil would force feed me in hell! 🤢

I think @cloudtree is right in another thread. There are all sorts popping up on these threads trying to undermine people doing sensible and proportionate things to prepare for bumps from Brexit.
Not sure if they are NoDealers, sick fucks or just bored. Hope it's the latter so they can fuck off and find something else to do eventually.

bellinisurge · 20/01/2019 14:44

Ps, spam and sardines sounds vile. But if that's what you eat, each to their own.

londonloves · 20/01/2019 15:12

I actually love sardines, mixed with pasta and tomatoes or on toast. So I am learning to make bread at the moment. And I've got a shed load of pasta and tinned tomatoes. I don't really know what I think about spam, might try some!
But yes to the whole "why are you prepping" on preppers board tedium.

PositivelyPERF · 20/01/2019 15:17

I have to laugh, when they pop up to tell us we’re obsessed, while they trawl the prepper threads. It’s not as if the threads are that easy to find. They rarely appear in active, so they have to go looking for them, but WE’RE the obsessed ones. Aye, right! Hmm

HolySwearingCuss · 20/01/2019 15:45

OP doesn't usually buy tins and suggested she was thinking of buying based on a preset list - not quite the same!

Whisky2014 · 20/01/2019 15:53

Mackerel in a spicy tomato sauce though...they are good. I make toast and butter it then use 1 tin over 2 pieces of toast ..delicious!

bellinisurge · 20/01/2019 16:06

With you on that. Delicious!

Peridot1 · 20/01/2019 16:25

I like sardines. And mackerel. Will be adding to my pile.

Used to live overseas and we could get tinned mackerel in olive oil and lemon. Was yum. Must have a look for it here. Lovely on rye bread with cherry tomatoes.

Whisky2014 · 20/01/2019 16:33

Oh I've not seen it in oil with lemon but that sounds very tasty too.

2 years ago we should've come up with new meals to tin and call the company The Prepper Co.
Missed a trick there..

bellinisurge · 20/01/2019 17:10

Look What We Found meals are almost as awesome @Whisky2014 .
If you can find them. They are a bit pricey but are our Go To meals for first night back from hols or first night at any self catering cottage we stay at.Don't need refrigeration to store.
If you see them in the shop and can stretch to them, worth getting.

AnotherShirtRuined · 20/01/2019 17:16

@PositivelyPERF Couldn't agree more. It's not as if the prepper board is the busiest corner of Mumsnet. Yet a number of posters, who admit to having no interest in prepping, seem to seek us out solely to inform us of their disinterest. Just why? And then we get the downright antagonistic posters who seem to take the preparations of total strangers on an internet forum as a personal affront.
