Prepping for brexit

Numberonecook · 20/09/2018 10:42

Ive just started getting some bits together ready for brexit. As a food scientist I am very aware of how much produce comes into the country and the resources needed to get things around the country. Im also aware of the chain and how everything is ‘just in time’ And a delay in the chain could lead to serious shortages and price rises.

This really worries me as there is 5 of us to feed. So, what non food essentials do you think I should also consider? We are not prepping for huge disaster just 6 months or so. I’ve got things like toiletries, loo roll etc. Anything else?

I can’t find it, can you link please?

Pandasarecute · 29/11/2018 22:18

I'm going to America next summer, thinking of buying dollars now before we leave the EU? What do you think? I'm buying extra tins / packets etc each time I go shopping so building up a stock of food

ElyElyOy · 29/11/2018 22:49

A journo contacted me on here about prepping: I didn’t reply. I figured even if it was anonymous and I was the most sensible person on the planet, it would still be sensationalised and I would have been made to look like I wear a tin hat or something Grin

perhapstomorrow · 29/11/2018 22:54

I said to my dh " I bet that's a mumsnetter"! It didn't look enough for the 4 months though.

AdoraBell · 29/11/2018 23:32

Bloody hell that feature names the entire family, tells their neighbours and the wider community exactly what they have and identifies the house Shock

AnotherShirtRuined · 30/11/2018 07:28

She may well be a MNer, but surely she can't on the prepper boards or she would never have done that article. However I hope others will be inspired to act by her rather than ridiculing her.

bellinisurge · 30/11/2018 07:48

@Pandasarecute - I am going to continental Europe in early summer. I'm considering getting some Euro now before the pound tanks. Emphasis on some.
However, having lived in a country where you always kept an eye on the dollar rather than local currency, I'd say currency speculation is a bit of a mug's game.
As with anything financial, it's up to you.

user187656748 · 30/11/2018 08:30

I also had the journalist contact through PM. Thats one of the reasons I suspected this was someone from MN.

I agree it doesn't look enough for 4 months other than to supplement other things. Perhaps there's also a freezer full of other stuff.

DS2 (11) was looking at the article with me and scoffed "call that a stockpile?!" Grin Blush

user187656748 · 30/11/2018 08:37

I was interested in the comments though. I know these are DM readers but even so the comments are overwhelmingly scathing regarding the ned to out anything aside just in case. Gives an idea of the scale of the issue if we did have supply chain problems...

MrsBobtonTrent · 30/11/2018 10:38

I love that the article has not only location and full names, but also a photo of the outside of the house to help the hordes find it.

Better than nothing, but there’s a lot of beans and not much else tbh. And only 2 toothbrushes for a family of five!

RhubarbTea · 30/11/2018 14:23

Wow I know that person in (very distantly) RL. Awkward Grin

user187656748 · 30/11/2018 14:24

Its actually potentially quite handy to know other peppers in RL so that could be useful rhubarb

RhubarbTea · 30/11/2018 14:30

She's a friend of an acquaintance. The only awkward thing is being willing to sell a story to the Dail Fail. But each to their own!
I'm not broadcasting my own prepping but I am encouraging people very close to me to get some stuff in. Am terrified of no deal.

Easilyflattered · 30/11/2018 17:13

Hmm I read that article and then read the comments about how she was being ridiculous and upsetting/scaring her poor children and it's made me question if I'm a bit bonkers to be stockpiling.

Although my husband whose thoughts were originally along the lines of letting me get on with it if it kept me happy, has now started to come round to my mindset. It's family finances that are currently curbing my prepping.

I would never bring up prepping with friends or work colleagues. I would be worried they'd laugh me out of the room. I've only discussed it with my husband and my brother (who is an economist and feels a bit preppy himself).

bellinisurge · 30/11/2018 17:30

I never tell anyone at work. We talk about "the stash" in our house to keep it lighthearted and make sure my dd sees the fun treats and junk stuff like pot noodles and chocolate as well as any other food we have in the pantry.
She's 11. She's picked up stuff on the news and asked me about it. I explained that it's a bumpy time in politics at the moment - they happen from to time to time - but we'll be ok.

RhubarbTea · 30/11/2018 19:20

Easily, interesting that your brother is an economist and feels like prepping. That's good to know (in a way). I haven't mentioned it much to my son, I'm just getting some extra stuff in and popping it all in a cupboard. He's 10.

MrsBobtonTrent · 30/11/2018 20:16

I frame it to my children as we don’t enjoy going shopping and we like a bargain. And they are well used to us having a well stocked garage - both shop bought and home preserved. So it looks like business as usual here.

BadlyAgedMemes · 30/11/2018 23:07

Re, the Daily Fail article - apart from the revealling to the world she's prepping (such a rookie mistake!), I'm most taken back that they only have eight cans of tinned tomatoes to last for four months!

Peacocking · 01/12/2018 01:16

The lady in the article is a member of a smallish fb group that's got quite a similar outlook to this board. Not sure if I'm allowed to mention the name of the group. I've found it interesting to follow and a fairly sensible and friendly bunch.

MayHasNineLives · 14/12/2018 10:11

Marking place.

bellinisurge · 14/12/2018 10:41

Hi @MayHasNineLives . Take it all slow and steady. Ask for advice on here. See you around.

AwdBovril · 14/12/2018 11:02

Does anyone have any recommendations for brands of dried milk - I'd rather avoid Nestlé if possible, & I want full fat. I've tried the skimmed, & it's rather lacking! Is Peak any good? Or are they all very similar... I will decant into a jar if it doesn't come in a decent container, I'd rather not pay more just because it's in a tin.

bellinisurge · 14/12/2018 11:08

I've gone for Nido but I think that's Nestle.
It's a bit out there (maybe not Smile) but have you looked into making your own nut milk.

ElyElyOy · 14/12/2018 11:10

Not dried, but soya? Or nut UHT? Often on sale cheaply in places like Heron etc. The Vegan FB groups are good for those bargains.
