What isn’t produced in Britain that we need to stockpile?

So, worst case scenario and we crash out with no deal as everyone seems keen to catastrophise, what would be useful to stock up on that isn’t produced here and would have to be imported. Any ideas?

I honestly don't think we'll see much difference. Maybe a short term shortage of a few things, but meh. We're a rich country and people trade with us. The deals will be different not non-existent.

bellinisurge · 19/07/2018 11:29

@MinaPaws - not really about why it might happen. There is a more than remote possibility of interrupted supply. Some people do some prepping because of that. Same as they would if, eg., there was a chance of being snowed in or similar.

Medication will be the main problem.

Those on cancer treatments, epilepsy medication - the real vital stuff. We, as individuals can’t stockpile prescriptions, but I hope to fuck this stupid government are doing something about it. Wankers.

Food - I think we will just be a bit limited for choice on things and will have to eat reactively.

My dh has inhalers (blue and brown) - he hardly uses either but intermittently needs them. I've been trying to prompt him to get more in.

Solar panels.
We have some and we are producing in a year about the amount of electricity we use in a year.
However, clearly you can’t store that electricity yet so it might be available when you want it (eg at night for the lights). And younwill have more power in summer than in winter.
I dint think I can switch the power of the main and still have the power from the solar panels. Otherwise I would tried to see if I could run the washing machine or the bread maker just on it.
But I’m banking in the idea I will be able to at least still run the freezer some of the time (otherwise what’s the point stockpiling stuff in the freezer?) as well as the fridge.

MrsR8 I tend to keep a few weeks' worth of food anyway these days and didn't need to buy anything during the worst week, whereas during the 2000 petrol crisis shortages, I was living in a small room in a flatshare on a street with shops. I remember that as worse than those of the snowy winters early this decade, or heard about locally during tBftE.

The shortages in March in Scotland sounded bad on the news though.

To answer the op, specifically- in terms of food stuffs, look at what you actually like and eat. In terms of medicine, if you are on a specific long term prescription, speak to your gp.
Remember that even if stuff is produced here it needs to be transported about and we all know from recent experience that our distribution system is quite vulnerable if the petrol supply itself is even slightly interrupted.
I stress I'm talking about interruption not some kind of apocalypse.
As a prepper it makes sense to focus on the likely problems not the wild imaginings. It's likely some parts of the country will be hit by disabling snow in winter, for example. Departure from the EU may all go smoothly, even if it feels like a roller coaster now. However, it's sensible to plan for it not going smoothly even for a short while, particularly with food distribution.
By all means have political bravado in front of other people one way or the other. But it's a good idea to get some extra bits in. You want to go further, take it from there.

pennycarbonara · 19/07/2018 16:31

Customs as a whole will be snarled up and delayed - anything imported is likely to be more difficult to get, not just items from the EU

Exactly @Mrsr8 .

If you have kids, I don't think it does them favours to show your concern or ramp up anxiety with them.

Anyone on a low budget or short of space, ask on this topic. I'm sure there's loads of helpful people here.

No need to panic. No need to stick your head in the sand.

Some of this thread may be of interest: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/eu_referendum_2016_/a3310556-Preppers-Paradise-Pickled-Turnips-and-Sovereignty-Spam

Notices will be sent out to businesses, and possibly households, in August and September, telling them how to prepare.

If your ds is reading George Orwell, I guess he's thinking about stuff. (By the way, I recommend "Keep the Aspidistra Flying " which is political only in the loosest sense.
Perhaps give him a project that makes a positive contribution rather than letting him dwell on stuff. Just a suggestion. Obviously, you know him best.

SameAndSameAgain · 19/07/2018 16:46

You need to stockpile absolutely nothing. The UK is a modern, developed nation. Armageddon is not going to come next spring.
