What isn’t produced in Britain that we need to stockpile?

So, worst case scenario and we crash out with no deal as everyone seems keen to catastrophise, what would be useful to stock up on that isn’t produced here and would have to be imported. Any ideas?

I have diesel stored. Not masses (3 x 20l jerry cans) but enough that we could get the car going.

We also generally have some petrol around for the lawnmower and other garden tools but only a 10l jerry can.

We have outbuildings though where it can all be stored well away from the house.

I am personally against storing petrol separately and prefer to keep my car never less than half full. That said, I did have one of those green plastic proper storage containers a while ago when I had to be prepared to make a last minute mercy mission to an elderly parent. As long as proper precautions are taken and it is an absolute necessity because you live in an isolated area, maybe.

I think fuel shortages are unlikely, but then I suppose we all said that a month before the fuel protest in the summer of 2000 so...

I think if it were to happen (for whatever reason, not Brexit as such but any reason like international issues, severe weather etc) then you would probably find you would use less fuel generally and just use it for important reasons that you have no other choice for.

Keeping your tank at a minimum 50% full should alleviate any major concerns: you will probably get a decent number of miles from that and if you drive conservatively (no donuts in empty retail park car parks Wink) it will probably go even further than usually. Although it’s handy to see if you can car pool with other people, but that’s a general prep thing anyway in case your car breaks down (which in my case seems incredibly often Hmm)

We are ok walking to shops as they are close. But neither school is close. Both are autistic and do not cope with buses.

Forgot to add - a bike won’t do me any good because of the school run with two kids - it’s a good part of an hour to walk it. I have been thinking of those who have no choice but to drive to work / see the doctor / shop. Maybe temporary car sharing / pooling is the answer for them. I can manage everything but the school run on foot. Also No Deal will coincide with Easter hols so that will take some pressure off getting them to school.

Thanks bellinisurge. For the winter health of the car I too keep the tank topped up (I’ve heard that otherwise water in the cold air inside a part-empty tank condenses and mixes with the fuel.) I don’t fancy a pump fight at our local supermarket and therefore asked. Jonworth.eu has a fab flow diagram for those who are into such things. The prediction is that Brexit will inevitably be delayed, but to counterbalance that there are many who very much want No Deal.

My gut feeling is that it won't run out but my have some supply chain hiccups with No Deal. I am not an industry expert. It is such an important symbol of a functioning economy and, of course, an important tax revenue source that it should be supported by government and industry efforts to keep it going.
That said, I never go below half a tank of petrol.
I would really discourage anyone from storing it. It is a fire hazard to say the least.
I say that because I can walk anywhere I need. Might be worth getting a bike if you haven't already got one.

Does anyone have sufficient industry / supply-chain knowledge to opine on whether petrol will run out? It’s the one thing I can’t stockpile!

You need to make friends with a farmer or smallholder that raises stock mostly on grass/hay/silage and home grown cereals if you want a ready supply of meat. Assuming their abattoir of choice is still running (current law is you can only home kill livestock for your own consumption, not to give away or to sell). I have put a few more sheep in lamb than last year for precisely this reason as a just in case!

We won't be going mad stockpiling but will make sure we have at least six weeks worth of food in and am building up a stash of tinned goods (and wine) just in case

No, six weeks isn't going mad at all!

If there's no food available for 6 weeks, society will have collapsed way before you open your front door.

I would suggest that if you have any repairs needing done, around the house, you get it done now, or at least buy the materials. When food prices go up, tradesmen will put their prices up and your white goods, tools, mechanicals, etc will go up.

I’m planning on buying a van, for my business, but debating if I should leave it until after Brexit. So many smaller businesses will be affected, it may lead to many more second hand vans for sale, as businesses go under.

@SophieofShepherdsBush - it generally doesn't hurt to put some extra food aside.
I'm frankly embarrassed that there may a knock on effect on Ireland.
My late Mum (Remain was her last vote) gets the last laugh because we are all Irish citizens because of her.
I have half an eye on Ireland realising non- resident Irish citizens are an income stream. Getting our passports sticks our heads above the taxman's parapet, so to speak. Doesn't stop me, though.

What an awful situation. I wonder if my aging parents who voted for Brexit have any idea that their day to day medications may be in short supply. Id talk to them but it would either be head in the sand pro Brexit stuff or they'd get terribly anxious.

I'm in Ireland so technically still Europe but do any of you well-informed folk know if food and medical supply here will be affected when b day arrives? Should we be prepping?

Just been to Lidl and they have a Spanish range currently which has some great deals. They had huge jars pf preserved garlic cloves in different flavours with 2020 dates which I got several of. Jars of black eyed beans, tins of olives and a huge variety of useful and interesting preserved veg and flavourings. Nothing was much over £1 and some of the sizes were very large.

Of course I don't mind...this is the recipe everyone seems to love.

1 sachet dried yeast
550g plain flour (I get bags at Lidl for 65p)
2 tspn sugar
2 tbspn oil (olive or veg/sunflower)
1.5 tspn salt
320ml water (I use 1/4 boiling water with cold water)

I just chuck it all in in the above order, leave it on a dough setting for 1.5 hours. Then I shape into rolls, brush with egg or milk (and sometimes add grated cheese or seeds) and leave for another 10-15 mins to rise, then cook for 20 mins at 180.

I have made a batch most days in the school holidays and it has disappeared within minutes!

@buttybuttybutthole Would you mind sharing your favourite bread maker bread recipe?

Report

I have a bread maker and my bread is amazing- I mix the dough then shape it, leave it to rise and cook in the oven! I make rolls, pizza dough, not usually loafs though but occasionally fruit bread or garlic and tear and share bread. 🙃
