Renaming topic to The Bunker - views?

Several posters supported the renaming of this board to The Bunker, so as to avoid the nutters wrong sort of discussion from more extreme elements. OliviaMNHQ canvassed support during another thread but to make it easier, let's put the topic name discussion in one place.

Personally, I'm all for The Bunker.

No, it sounds suitably boring and official to me without suggesting apocalyptic scenarios. But also descriptive enough to be found by newbies.

Stratter5 · 24/11/2015 19:27

But I don't want something boring and official just because there's scoffing nobheads about :(

zombiesarecoming · 24/11/2015 19:30

What about
Preppers - but not the crazy extreme sort so go elsewhere if your a nutter

I am in polite mode tonight otherwise the go elsewhere could have numerous phrases that fit

ThomasRichard · 24/11/2015 19:31

How about TTTMNBN: The Topic That Must Not Be Named...

OP posts:
ThomasRichard · 24/11/2015 19:32

Or "You Know Where"

I'm really sorry if I did anything wrong and I never said it was a done deal. Sad I was just trying to be helpful.

I'll let MN know that you are still discussing it.

Kacie123 · 24/11/2015 19:37

I do know what you mean ... but does it really matter if a board has a dull name? Would that stop the spirit of the place, especially if it fixes some of the repeated insults and potential problems?

Kacie123 · 24/11/2015 19:38

And an "us" and "them" mentally won't help anyone sadly...

Zetetik · 24/11/2015 19:39

Have sent this now -

Hi MN

It looks like discussions on the name have re-opened so could you hold off until you hear from someone?

Thanks

Zet

ThomasRichard · 24/11/2015 20:11

Sorry Zet, I didn't know you had sent anything. Don't feel bad :) X

Yeesh I've just reread my last comment and realised how patronising it looks. I didn't intend it that way at all. I just meant it shouldn't look like "some secretive group of weirdos" vs "the rest of Mumsnet". I will heartily shut up now Grin

FuckTheseSixFishInParticular · 24/11/2015 22:49

Emergency Preparedness is the official term used by the government, so maybe something people look for more.

Also, to me anyway, The Bunker might get too easily confused with other meanings. I keep imagining hoards of bewildered golf enthusiasts coming on looking to discuss the Ryder Cup. I love it as a nn though.

hebihebi · 25/11/2015 04:33

I like Preppers best. I think everyone is getting used to it and I don't see why we should give in to the bullying arseholes who like to come here and call us all loons.

Second I would choose Emergency Preparedness. Because I think it is apt.

The Bunker I'm not so keen on. I do think people might think we're golfers and I think it will attract more negative attention. I don't want to have 300 threads explaining the title.

hebihebi · 25/11/2015 04:48

Actually one good thing about Emergency Preparedness is that at least it's clear. I'm always a bit Confused at the " I bought Aunt Jeanie's Christmas present today" posts. People can also understand it's about pepping for winter or natural disasters not just ZAs. I don't know, EP might be a good idea.

Speederman · 25/11/2015 05:05

I have no good ideas but will post whatever it's called. Love this board!

swisscheesetony · 25/11/2015 05:40

Has anyone else noticed the irony/hypocrisy/mnhq's tongue firmly in cheek with the sponsors thread "prepping for Christmas"?

Perhaps people are only allowed to prep for naice things and not bad things. Wink

warmastoast · 25/11/2015 06:10

I think preppers is fine and any extreme ammo-hoarder types that could possibly find the board through google can be set straight about the tone and intent of the board. I'm not picturing a wholesale invasion but I guess we could start a thread on how to prep for one Wink

The bunker is ok but also those who don't get it already might not understand that it's ironic and just assume paranoia.

Emergency preparedness is kind of boring and doesn't quite cover it to me.

chilledwarmth · 25/11/2015 06:35

The Bunker sounds like a bad idea I hope you don't mind me saying. It gives me images of someone holed up in actual bunker waiting for civil war.

I'd like to vote for Emergency Preparedness as others have recommended. It sums up what the prepping board is about in just 2 words, and it avoids any negative connotations around the word prepper.

hebihebi · 25/11/2015 06:45

By the way, I'm glad you decided to stick around chilledwarmth.

chilledwarmth · 25/11/2015 07:07

hehe thanks hebihebi

lighteningirl · 25/11/2015 07:18

I like Preppers it is what it is. I dislike The Bunker my Dd would post his handicap on that and Emergency Preparedness is pandering to the bullies.

ScrappyMalloy · 25/11/2015 07:33

I'm not so keen on The Bunker. It makes me think of the last days of WWII, rather than getting ready for snow.

I am quite happy with Preppers, with Emergency Preparedness coming in second.

atticusclaw2 · 25/11/2015 08:21

Guys whatever it is called we are going to get the same old posters coming on and telling us we're nuts and shouldn't be calling the topic whatever we have called it. Does it really matter what we are called?

I am not a prepper or an emergency preparer or anything in fact. I'm a normal person who likes make up, cake, Jude Law and making sure I'm prepared for emergency situations. I couldn't give a toss what those posters say. We will always get "OMG I can't believe there's a whole board of threads about this stuff, you're all crazy!" on every other thread.

To be honest I'm pretty sure that those few posters who were so gobby on the negative posts secretly want to be prepared. They can't stay away from the board. Maybe they were kicked out of the girl guides or something...

gamerchick · 25/11/2015 08:28

Well tbh I don't see the need to stir the nest back up. People had their rant and then moved on to other topics to rant about (like revenge of the cis) Wink why not just leave well alone?

HoldMeCloserTonyDanza · 25/11/2015 08:38

I appreciate that people feel they get a hard time from the rest of MN but I have to be honest - people have to make more of an effort here. If the rest of MN remains as hostile as it currently is to this forum, the forum will not succeed. There will be drama, or scandal (I could already point to a handful of posts promoting stuff that's illegal, for example, that taken out of context look REALLY bad).

So you can have a whine that it's unfair if you want, but ultimately the forum must be non-threatening and boring to the general MN population or it will go away. You want to pick a fight with the rest of MN, you won't win. Everything here needs to get a bit more staid and mainstream because at the moment there is too much The Collapse Of Civil Society Is Imminent And Likely.

When the forum has been up and running for months and has its own culture and a wide variety of regulars, you can start theoretical threads about the apocalypse but if the hardcore first adopters starts threads about that now, it just alienates people.
