Blimey, is this topic "Zombie apocalypse conspiracy theory nuclear bomb sharknado paranoia" in disguise?

I go away for a few weeks, and all "one flew over the cuckoos nest" breaks lose!

Confused

Forgive me for being so humourless; if you want that, you'll have to go back to AIBU. It's more snow and power cuts here.

Disappointing, huh.

gamerchick · 09/11/2015 22:44

Stratter speaks all our brains OP Wink

QuintShhhhhh · 09/11/2015 22:44

But why is that such a danger now? What will be different this winter?

It was 17 degrees in London the other day!

OP posts:
gamerchick · 09/11/2015 22:45

Probably nothing we hope.

howtorebuild · 09/11/2015 22:46

Has this taken over from philosophy and religion as the place to be, for goading?

CuttedUpPear · 09/11/2015 22:46

Get your Oscars dress on and load up the Kalishnikov.
It's all going down.
Apparently.

TwllBach · 09/11/2015 22:47

I read on here t'other day that power cuts are going to become more frequent because of cutbacks in the tree cutting/trimming businesses (paraphrases) and that made perfect sense to me.

I also love a good zombie apocalypse thread

gamerchick · 09/11/2015 22:48

Yeah I was thinking of that today while watching the tree surgeons out back.

What's with not doing the taming the trees down south?

PhilPhilConnors · 09/11/2015 22:49

I live in a rural area, local farmers have noted that trees have not been cut around electricity cables for ages, when they used to be done fairly regularly.
This is likely to cause some problems with supply sooner or later.

I'm not a prepper, but stumbled in here.

PhilPhilConnors · 09/11/2015 22:50

Ooh, weird x-post!
I'm up north, not down south though.

Stratter5 · 09/11/2015 22:50

Hive mind.

Lot of talk about power cuts this winter, seen a fair few articles about it around. And we get cut off by snow easily. Plus, there's non UK posters on here.

Some people struggle with the concept that there's thriving life outside of the M25. Probably they'd die of horror if they knew some of us even prefer it, and aren't bothered by the lack of 24 hour supermarkets within walking distance, or the dearth of Ocado deliveries.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 09/11/2015 22:50

If sharknado comes, I am totally relying on the fact that the blonde girls always get eaten, miss the gory stuff, and get cut out somehow alive and unharmed just before the end.

Zombies... I live in the top floor?

Anything else and I have masses of swede, Pepsi and wine, so I'll go out in style.

Stratter5 · 09/11/2015 22:51

YY they've not been done here either, Phil, nor last year.

QuintShhhhhh · 09/11/2015 22:53

I struggle with the concept that snow is so hard to clear away.

Winter is coming every year, yet snow is a perpetual problem that cant be solved.

I have a theory that mustard will cover any human scent, if used wisely, to ward off zombies.

A few of us are disabled, do you understand that life may not be as easy now in an emergency for some? Some are disabled lone parents, so need to think this stuff through.

Stratter5 · 09/11/2015 22:57

It's very rural here, and where I am the weather comes straight off the Nortj sea and hits us first. We can get a lot of snow dumped. Up on the Wolds a few years ago there were roads that had snow piled so high either side that it was like driving in a tunnel - I couldn't see over them in my 4x4, and you couldn't get out of where I live if you didn't have a 4x4. There were 3-4 days when nobody got out.

swisscheesetony · 09/11/2015 22:59

You can clear all of London's snow by liberally shaking a pack of macdonalds Chips and dislodging a few grains of salt.

But my ocado driver told me there's somewhere called "north" where it's different.

Kingfisherfree · 09/11/2015 22:59

I love the Prepper's board just what we need for the winter. Even tho I have been Kondoing this summer my 1930s pantry will now be put to good use and will be stuffed with supplies.

PhilPhilConnors · 09/11/2015 23:11

Quint, when I was a teenager we were snowed in spectacularly - 10 ft drifts covering our long drive.
The road to our drive was very steep and windy, and also covered in daft amounts of snow.
We were stuck at home until a digger could get up the road and dig us out, which (if memory serves) was nearly a week.
We had no electricity for well over a week.
We boiled snow for drinking and had well stocked cupboards, we also had a calor gas stove so we didn't freeze.
Bad snow does occasionally happen, and if you're in the middle of nowhere the roads don't get cleared.

QuintShhhhhh · 09/11/2015 23:22

"Up on the Wolds a few years ago there were roads that had snow piled so high either side that it was like driving in a tunnel"

Thats pretty much how it is like here every winter. Snow is still cleared. The first shifts start at 4 am, and they keep going till past midnight - different shifts throughout the day. Most diggers and lorries have showel attachments for winter use.

Are there really no contingencies and plans for what to do in such heavy snowfall?

Now, this is pretty unusual, though:

Err no, the main roads get cleared, but if you don't live on a main road, you'll have to wait for a friendly farmer. Or a thaw. Whichever happens along first.

This is a huge, very rural county, we don't have a single motorway, and very little dual carriageway - in a 15 mile radius of me there is literally one mile of dualling, on the up bit of a hill only, so we can overtake lorries. A main road here would be a B road in most other places. It's also home to some of the most deprived areas of the country, mostly I suspect because of a complete lack of infrastructure like decent roads and trains. Upside is, it's very quiet, and the local corner shop owner can leave his shop unlocked and nip back home next door in between customers. Nobody steals the alcohol or cigarettes because we'd all know who did it.

MrsTerryPratchett · 10/11/2015 01:08

It really is astounding to some people that some MNers don't live inside the M25. Some of us Shock even live in forrin parts. I know, cray, right?

The fact that it was 17 degrees in London the other day is a BAD sign. More extreme weather is what's coming. Some of that will be hot Novembers.

Destinysdaughter · 10/11/2015 01:17

I still don't get why you need a whole topic about it though? Just get some cans in, stock up your freezer and make sure you've got a few candles and batteries for your torch. Job done! ( or am I missing something...?)

MrsTerryPratchett · 10/11/2015 01:22

I love when people who don't prep come on here and tell people who do how; easy; crazy; useless it is.

I'm going to the Yoga topic and tell them it's just breathing and stretching and the Doghouse and tell them dogs just need water, food and exercise; what's to talk about?

If we're happy, and using our topic, can't everyone else just hide it?
