Ignore the vagueness but I don't want to put DP.

Just a quick note that due to budget cut backs and new contracts the utility arborist work has been severely cut back this year. In other words lots of trees that should (and usually would) have been cut away from the power lines throughout the year haven't. Especially in the South/South East.

DP has said to expect more power cuts due to overhanging trees etc falling during storms/freezing weather. He brought home a generator the other day and he is the least preppy person ever.

I think you need a fairly large one to keep the house running and they can cost thousands (plus you need a gizmo to switch the house electricity from the grid to the generator). But you can buy smaller generators to keep a few things running for a couple of hundred quid.

You also then need a stash of fuel of course.

The one we've been looking at was £600, so just to be able to charge phones, boil a kettle, allow us to use the microwave I guess.

What fuel do they use? Petrol?

I think you can get petrol or diesel. Farmers tend to have diesel since they get the red stuff .

I guess it's a bit like sizing an off grid RE system - you'd want to think about what you're wanting to power, what things you want to run simultaneously, how long for (relevant for how much fuel you'd need on hand) etc and then look at genny sizes with that in mind.
