Where do you store stuff when you have no space?

I really want to start prepping properly. I have lots of lists and a little stash at the bottom of my wardrobe.

But...we have no spare space. Small house, lots of DC and I'm disabled so have things like wheelchair in cupboard under the stairs which is the only realistic "spare" space. Wardrobes, under beds etc is used eg I store my summer clothes vac pacced as don't have wardrobe space for everything. We also camp so things like the tent is under the stairs.

The loft isn't boarded for storage and we can't afford it anyway. If I left stuff outside it would get nicked (and I mean now, not post apocalypse Grin) unless it was in a large enough container eg shed that people couldn't take. But we can't afford a very large container or shed...

I'm anxious Smile any ideas oh wise ones?

A boat????

Are you made of money? And is he a sailor? (Or just a man with a dream who is secretly yearning after boy-toys.)

cozietoesie · 06/11/2015 18:58

PS - and do you live near to the sea?

PurpleHairAndPearls · 06/11/2015 19:50

We have no money at all and no proximity to the water. And he doesn't even like boats!

...And he doesn't even like boats!...

Ah - he's trying to put you off talking about inconvenient things it sounds like.

Steer him towards prize vegetable gardening. Any allotments near you? Grin

atticusclaw2 · 07/11/2015 10:31

DH does that. I'll try to get him on board wth small practical things and he'll start talking about buying generators that cost thousands of pounds, knowing full well that it won't happen. I shall be tossing him out first when the zombies come Grin

You don't sound like a loon purple. We are very dependent on technology and its one of the more likely emergency scenarios. We're the sensible ones. The people who are completely unprepared for anything are the loons IMO.

Stratter5 · 07/11/2015 11:15

So lovely to be amongst fellow sensible people. Agree it's them that are the loons, not us.

Zetetic · 07/11/2015 12:33

I've never understood why people think it is nuts to prepare for things like power cuts, being snowed in, natural disasters, vehicle breakdowns and man made problems such as strikes.

There are so many possibilities it just seems wiser to prepare. I've also found that you learn ways of improving everyday life iyswim.

Stratter5 · 07/11/2015 12:47

Head in the sand attitude. It's mentally more comfortable to shut possibilities out, than to acknowledge that history repeats itself, and to look back and learn.

PurpleHairAndPearls · 07/11/2015 18:39

Oh DH is definitely committed to the cause...in fact I recently had to ask MN on his behalf if crossbows were legal Hmm

In fact my parents have ordered this for him for Christmas (prompted by him trying to find out if their loft was boarded...)

We have very little space available in our house. I would need to use under the beds, in the bottom of wardrobes, and hijack a few cupboards in the kitchen. The airing cupboard is full of other things already, so no chance of putting anything there!

gamerchick · 08/11/2015 10:42

How many cupboards do you have in the kitchen? Are they all used for food ?

PurpleHairAndPearls · 09/11/2015 07:10

Hmm. The kitchen is generally full as have a houseful of DC who eat lots but I have located a small half size cupboard squeezed into a corner which currently holds a lot of inherited random items like nice wine glasses and special dishes for avocados. If can relocate these items I could use this.

I'm guessing if there's a zombie apocalypse they won't be requiring avocado dishes...

Do you all have a big dog to guard supplies tho. I'm thinking a Boxer looks like a good bet.

Kingfisherfree · 09/11/2015 15:45

I have read Day of the Triffids Grin - things can get nasty pretty quickly!
