Socks and tights?

I'm struggling to find socks and tights for premature babies. When I do (Boots LBW size booties) they might be the right length but assume the baby is as chubby as a term NB so don't stay on.

I keep her in baby-grows most of the time but sometimes I want to dress her and Tink was in preterm clothes till she was 4 months!

Has anyone found any anywhere?

I had no luck with tights until dd was quite big and tbh the only bootees that were any good were the old fashioned knitted sort. I found the sizing rubbish on Boots LBW clothes- short and wide. For small outfits, try TK Maxx as the French/Italian brands they carry are often smaller than equivalent UK sizes. I found some stunning little dresses for dd that way.

No, I never found any - I ordered some premature baby socks from the 'net and they just stay on now she's 12 pounds!

Not very good then

I used to open out the cuff on booties, wrap micropore around it and then fold it back down! They were still baggy but stayed on.

Maybe we should start a petition to some of the retailers to reassess their premature sizes, get the Bliss website and our Bliss groups involved. Think it would help?

The smallest tights I ever found were from Next as they do 0-3 months and everybody else seems to have 0-6 months.

H&M do 0-0 size which eventually fit babyrascal when she weighed around 6lb.

I'm currently struggling to find shoes small enough now she is almost walking.....any suggestions. She is less than a size 0 currently wears 0-3 months pram shoes despite being 13mths old!!

Rascal I can't believe she's that old already! It seems like yesterday I was talking to you when she was newborn.

I'm afraid I had the same problem until about size 2 (which is rare enough) and we just kept her barefooted until she could walk properly which worked out well for getting to a proper size. Baby feet grow fast though, she's gaining about a half size a month ATM.

I know neither can I!! Been meaning to email you as I've been following your pregnancy etc on here

I'm planning to keep her barefooted for now - apparently that is best anyway for her foot development

I used to have a friend that worked for sock manufacturer and they have to be made on a specific type of machine and its not actually possible to go down any further than the 00 size, so thats why it is near on impossible to find socks /tights that go that small

ladylush · 06/11/2009 11:58

I got tights from the internet. dd was under 5lbs at that point. Even when she got to 6lbs the 00 size was too large.

miamla · 06/11/2009 12:03

I'm here because i was intrigued about what socks and tights had to do with a premature birth and now i know!

have you thought about posting in 'arts and crafts' on here? there are many knitters (we've even got our own ravelry group) so its worth asking. I'd be happy to make some but won't be for a month or so due to other committments

I found that scratch mitts worked really well as socks when the babies were tiny, and they come in a range of sizes. Could that work?

Sugarmuppet · 14/05/2010 13:07

'socks on' from ebay or mothercare! absolutely fab, kept wee socks on 4lb baby no prob, and now that she is 9lb they still keep her socks on!
