Fortifier causing digestive issues ?

My baby was born at 30+1 so was put on breast milk fortifier. Her due date was yesterday and she’s now 10 weeks old. Her weight gain has been brilliant. I want to stop the fortifier because my gut is telling me it’s what’s causing the following symptoms:

-constipation
-gas and trapped wind
-constant stomach discomfort
-very small infrequent poos
-not being able to take more than 2oz feeds but is feeding every 1.5-2 hours because she’s hungry

Before I trust my instincts and tell the NICU outreach nurses I’m taking her off it, has anyone experienced similar symptoms with a preterm baby on fortifier?

Hi, when my little girl was in NICU she was on fortifier but sorry I cant actually remember how she was on it (probably trying to block all that out my memory 🙈)

What I would say is, as the parent raise your concerns. It can be difficult when they feel they know best but trust your gut.

Maybe say you want to see how she does off it for maybe 48 hours and weigh her to see if its having any significant impact on weightloss etc and if so you are happy for her to go back on rather than dismiss it completely.

Explain what issues shes having and you want to see if it makes a difference. If you dont feel comfortable speaking up on ward round, if anything like my NICU sometimes there was lots of people and can be daunting. Ask to speak to them seperately.

I have been there; its hard but be open and honest and hopefully you have a supportive team.

Good luck

I just re-read sorry and it would seem like you are home now.

My advice stays the same though maybe jus make arrangements to weigh her more frequently over a period of a week or whatever and monitor if she has weightloss.

She is at home, you know her best. Definately give it a go and again, hopefully you have a supportive team x
