Feeding Amounts for Formula Fed Preemiea

Hi All,

looking for some guidance as I live in Austria and don’t seem to be getting clear answers.

Born at 34+5 we have had to move our daughter onto formula - 100% the best call for both of us. When she arrived she was in good shape but my body wasn’t physically ready to BF, so she was fed from a bottle, so she has always preferred it and my supply has never been great.

ANYWAY - she is now 5 weeks, she struggles a lot with gas (we feed with HIPP comfort) and so we upped the teat size on her bottle as it seemed she had outgrown the 0 size. Now she has also started to spit up quite a lot. I pace feed her and burp her, sit her up etc, but it seems to still come up, either dramatically like yesterday’s projectile, or silently as it did today in her pram, drenching the mattress and side.

She seems to be gaining weight, and the spit up doesn’t seem to bother her too much, but the gas and pooping is the problem. It also makes me super anxious to lie her on her back because I feel she’s just going to full on vomit - making using the pram and night feeds a bit of an involved process.

I wonder if we are just feeding her too much as we are feeding her as a 5 week old, not adjusted. Does anyone know of any guidelines for preemies? Should I drop her back down to max 90ml per bottle? She hits due date tomorrow.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I would use her adjusted age for a formula feed and offer more if she finishes the bottle.

That’s the thing, she’ll happily take down 120ml which is right for her age, not corrected age - she doesn’t seem to have an off button when it comes to feeding with a bottle.

Can you consult with a pediatrician?
