Is bleeding a sign of premature birth?

Hi,

On Monday night I had a gush of fresh blood come out after a bath and a blob of thick white mucus. I was 33+4 and admitted to DAU. When I got there I'd passed a 50p size clot on my pad and my urine sample was red. I was examined by the on duty doctor and also the senior consultant with a speculum and my cervix was closed but there was still dark blood visible inside me. Baby fine on CTG but I was kept in overnight as was having period like pains and tightenings on the TOCO readings. I've now had the two steroid injections as they have said it could be a sign of pre term labour. It's an IVF pregnancy and I also lost my baby's twin at 9 weeks so feeling super paranoid and anxious atm. My DS who was natural pregnancy and birth I never felt contractions with in labour and I couldn't feel the tightenings on the CTG. I suppose the only thing I can say I feel is the period like pain but I've been having these on and off. Has anyone been through similar?

Are they offering extra monitoring for you OP? And are your baby movements still normal? A thick white mucus could be something (or nothing) for sure so I'm hoping they are keeping regular checks on you? X

Hi OP, yes it can mean that. Did they rule out a placental abruption?

In my experience: sudden bleed at 32+6 that continued for 2 days. Got the steroid injection. It stopped, I left hospital, started again 12 hours later. Back to hospital, had my son at 33+6. (He is now a happy, healthy 5 year old)

Absolutely insist on extra monitoring and if anything is not right or the bleeding starts again go back and ask to be admitted.

Hopefully it’s a one off but any doubts put your foot down.

I bled (lots) at 29 weeks and dd was delivered by c section. Placental abruption.

Thanks ladies. I meant to add too, yesterday I had 3+ ketones, 1+ proteins, 2+ leukocytes and 1+ blood in my urine which pretty much got dismissed by "drink this big jug of water and dilute your urine and redo a sample" which brought the levels down a bit but all still present except proteins so they let me go. I had my usual midwife at my appointment today at the smaller, community hospital which ended up in 2 hours there. Ketones were still 3+ and proteins 1+. Did a CTG again as she's been quiet again today but all was okay. The midwife's are a bit confused as to what's going on. I did three urine samples there and drank a jug of water and they finally came down a bit on the last sample but they've sent my urine off to be tested. On my second sample when I got off the toilet there was some blood in the bottom of the loo which freaked me out but we weren't sure if the toilet wasn't flushed properly from one of the post natal women on the ward. Third sample I had no blood in loo or on paper but I've got to go back to the main hospital if I does happen. They requested me an urgent scan, of which the main hospital has just called with an appointment tonight at 5pm. I've been booked a consultant appointment on 4th Jan. I've got to re do another glucose blood test and go back in Sunday and Wednesday for more CTG's at my usual hospital. She thinks the consultant gave me steroids not so much in case spontaneous labour starts early, more so if I bleed again they may want to get her out. I'm also measuring 2cm smaller than she measured me at my last appointment 2 weeks ago but she's 3/5 engaged so it could be that. Hopefully I get some reassurance off the scan later as I feel stressed AF at the minute!

To add, nothings been mentioned about placental abruption. My bleeding only lasted Monday night and haven't had anymore since 🤞

Glad they've got a scan booked for you, and if you're not happy with the answer they have given you then keep pestering them x

Scan was fine. All blood flows in the umbilical cord and placenta was fine. No bleeding round the placenta and fluid normal so she's fine and no signs as to where the blood came from with regards to her so I do feel more reassured now. They estimated she's 5lb10oz now too and lots of hair! Doctor on DAU had to review my scan, just got to get to the bottom of the urine samples now.

Glad things seem ok, OP. She’s a good size already anyway so try not to stress too much if she does end up being early. Good luck!

Crazydoglady123 · 10/12/2021 23:22

Thanks @MiniMaxi. Yeah she can come now if she wants at that size 😂 Her movements have actually been back to normal today which is so reassuring! Just need to get to the bottom of the urine results
