Hello brave ladies. I have birth to a 4lb 13oz baby on Saturday. Labour very short and he was checked by paeds and handed back to me. Was in incubator for 15 hours then put in crib. Blood sugars and temperatures have been stopped yesterday. He's feeding on and off sometimes I get 30ml down him in 15 mins other times it takes an hour. He's due a recheck of jaundice levels today then query home. I'm due to see consultant to ask why he was early born at 34 weeks and 4 days. Does this all sound par for the course? Just hoping he'll be ok xx

No 2014 the paed team were happy he's fine just small due to gestation age. He appears ok otherwise. He's alert and well with good muscle tone and sick reflex

Ds has a Hollywood smile, he was 32 weeks Grin

2014newme · 18/10/2017 09:59

That's good to hear about the smile. I think mine being twins was a factor

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 18/10/2017 10:06

Think it was probably luck of the draw tbh, my sister has amazing teeth too, 45 and no fillings and also a proper Hollywood smile and he's a lot like her.

RJnomore1 · 18/10/2017 10:16

My littlest has tiny teeth but quite strong

2014newme · 18/10/2017 10:18

It wasn't till age 4 that the tooth problems became apparent

welshweasel · 18/10/2017 16:19

Take him out if you want to, there's absolutely no reason not to. We walked to the local pub for lunch on day 5, in fact we spent most of DH's paternity leave going out for lunch - make the most of the sleepy phase!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 18/10/2017 16:21

I agree, nice gentle stroll will do you both the world of good. Smile

Congratulations! Flowers
I had two preemies - 1st born at 30+4 and the 2nd born at 33 weeks. Both spontaneous and unexpected (although i had a feeling my 2nd would come early) no idea why. Your little one sounds like he is doing great 😊 my first was in hospital for 5.5 weeks and my second was in for 2 weeks. The first couple of days they were home their routine went out the window lol, but they got back into it. I used to feed them when they were hungry, but would wake them if they had gone about 4 hours without a feed. They are now 4.5 and nearly 2 and amazing, you would never know they were prem! Enjoy your little one, go out whenever you feel ready 😊
Keep an eye on him in the winter, if he has a cold/ blocked nose, you can get drops for their nose. My 2nd ended up back in hospital with bronchiolitis a week after he came home.
Enjoy your little boy, i wish mine were tiny again lol x

FluffyFlowerFace · 18/10/2017 17:13

Do you know why they were early heart?

OP posts:
Heartofglass12345 · 18/10/2017 23:53

No, it was never investigated. I was ill for a few days before i had my first so i thought maybe it was that, but then my second was late too so it must be me lol. I was quite overweight which i think can be a factor, but nothing was ever said. Enjoy having your little boy home, its the best feeling ever isnt it 😊

Blueberrysandgrapes76 · 18/10/2017 23:59

Congratulations!

But please don’t listen to people telling you to take him out. He’s still so little and vulnerable. Newborns especially premature ones have immature immune systems and there are SO many nasty viruses going round atm. I say this as someone whose newborn caught a nasty cold virus and ended up in intensive care and hospital for a month. Don’t take the risk - stay at home for a while longer or go somewhere out where you can’t catch stuff like a nature park! Enjoy the snuggles and lovely first few days with your baby.

FluffyFlowerFace · 19/10/2017 01:10

We were going to take him out in the pram for half an hour in the local park with our dog. Don't think we'll be taking him to the pub etc for a while. Also pushing grandparents to have flu jabs to reduce his risk. We're both nhs workers so had our flu jabs a few weeks ago hopefully he'll have immunity from that.

You wouldn't want to take him on the tube or a very crowded place or let anyone with a cold near him but a short walk is absolutely fine.

kshaw · 19/10/2017 06:14

I had a 34+6 and all that sounds perfect - mine was 6lb 11 and she had jaundice for a week, was taking an hour each time to get 30ml in her - my advice on that was to get your own bottles, the disposables the hospital provided were useless, once got her home it took 2 mins to get
It in her - scared
Me a bit!!!
She’s now 29 week and thriving!
Congratulations xx

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 19/10/2017 06:21

I had a 34+6

She’s now 29 week and thriving

Confused
MrsJamin · 19/10/2017 06:22

Ds2 was born at 35+6 at 5lb12. He was really yellow and had low blood sugar for the first few days but has been healthy ever since (he's 7!). I'd v much recommend a sling like a kari me to keep him close to you, it really helped me with ds2.

Snap8TheCat · 19/10/2017 06:55

Why the confused face Dame?

Presumably born at 34 weeks and 6 days. Now baby is 29 weeks (nearly 7 months to most people) and thriving. Bit of reassurance for the OP.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 19/10/2017 07:23

Sorry, it's early, my mistake!

FluffyFlowerFace · 19/10/2017 07:33

K shaw that's an amazing weight for a 34 weeker I was less than than full term lol

OP posts:
FluffyFlowerFace · 19/10/2017 21:21

Midwife saw him today. He's lost some weight but not enough to worry about. Jaundice improved. He's had two poos. She discussed another debrief in six weeks that i want because I've been given different views of what happened x

FluffyFlowerFace · 20/10/2017 09:27

Bad night. It's my fault he was prem I knew i was in labour but didn't act fast enough. I didn't look after myself in pregnancy I was so stressed and ate crap. I acted mental at times I want to know why it happened. What if he's going to have problems because of me

OP posts:
LuchiMangsho · 20/10/2017 09:37

You need sleep. I have given birth to a baby at 26 weeks. I have a crap Placenta. That's just the way it is. I have two kids (the other was full term) so won't be having any more. I doubt as a 34 weeker with a short neonatal stay he's going to have problems since he wasn't ventilated etc and nor was he particularly small (ie IUGR). Even if you were in labour at your gestation there wasn't much they would have done. (At 26 weeks they were able to stop mine for 3 days).

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 20/10/2017 11:04

Oh you poor thing!

Nothing you ate affected him while you were carrying him, honestly. Look at how many people live in the most dire conditions all around the world and babies are born every day absolutely fine.

34 weeks isn't hugely early and he was a good weight and he's home already. Ds was 32 weeks, in SCBU, ventilated, had a collapsed lung and then an infection and he was STILL fine and has had no problems whatsoever.

This is tiredness and probably delayed shock and the baby blues. If possible try and cosy up and have 40 winks if the baby sleeps. I used to find a hot water bottle helped relax me when I was strung up.

He is fine they wouldn't have let him home if he wasn't 😊

MrsJayy · 20/10/2017 12:10

Oh no it wasn't your fault at all these things happen,I know it sounds cliche but it is true we can't control our bodies.
