Little one born early.

Hello brave ladies. I have birth to a 4lb 13oz baby on Saturday. Labour very short and he was checked by paeds and handed back to me. Was in incubator for 15 hours then put in crib. Blood sugars and temperatures have been stopped yesterday. He's feeding on and off sometimes I get 30ml down him in 15 mins other times it takes an hour. He's due a recheck of jaundice levels today then query home. I'm due to see consultant to ask why he was early born at 34 weeks and 4 days. Does this all sound par for the course? Just hoping he'll be ok xx

Aww congrats I had a 35 weeker nearly 20 years ago and all that sounds the same but we had to stay in till she was5lLb, and she had uv therapy for her jaundice, fingers crossed for your baby and you get home soon.

Sounds like he's doing great.

I had a 4lb 10 32 weekend 13 years ago, she had to go to intensive care and was in for 3 weeks, mostly because she wa too early to suck so couldn't feed herself . I do remember having to make sure she fed every couple of hours when she came home and yes the jaundice checks.

She's upstairs now, huge and lively and a even as a teenager a joy to have in the house. Congrats on your lovely boy and enjoy him, I know it's hard when you're worried they're ok but he sounds like he is doing grand.

I had a 4lb 8oz baby 4 weeks early. Sounds very like your experience though mine didn't feed well and ended up in scbu for a couple of days and kept on the ward for 10 days. That was 12 years ago and she's perfect! Bang on 50th centile for height and weight, doing well at school. Absolutely no lasting effects. She was a bit delayed with her motor skills - late to sit independently, crawl and walk but she caught up by 2. Try to enjoy him and not worry. Wish I'd taken that advice! Good luck!

Congratulations!
My little one was 3.8lbs and 31 weeks. Now just turned 2 and all fab! It’s all such a shock but it sounds like you’re both doing great. Flowers

All sounds fine. Mine were smaller than that born exactly same time as yours but 8 had twins. Congratulations!

Congratulations! I had DS at 35+0 and we went home day 3. No ongoing issues.

Aww congratulations! Its scary when they are born so soon, as you think you have more time to prepare, and the whole bonding bit is taken away from you. Well, it was for me when I had my 31 weeker. She was 3lb 10 1/2 ozs and spent the first week in an incubator, needing help with breathing for a few days. When I first held her it was magical but scary as she was so tiny. She came home after approx 4 weeks, just in time for Christmas. She will be 18 in just over a month!

Get as involved as you can with the care of him as much as you can/feel up to. I tried BF mine, but she was too small and couldn't latch on. I ended up borrowing a pump from the hospital and in my time at home, expressed as much milk and froze it as possible. I then took it to the hospital for them to tube feed her.

Mine was born early due to me having a strep infection, but there can be all sorts of reasons why it happens.

I'll just stay positive for him. Doctor thinks a urine infection may have evicted him!

Seen Dr they said it was either uti or placenta clots. They said ketones in wee was nothing to do with pcos or diabetes but prob lack of food. She said if placenta issue 10% risk of recurrence and I'd be under consultant care. She said if uti I'd treat with antibiotics. She said his weight is 50% centile so he was being fed well enough

He's home! How did you ladies find the 1st few nights? He's feeding well but no poos yet I really want him to clear the bilirubin out his system!

Mine was jaundiced from day 3 for almost 3 weeks, we narrowly avoided readmission. Best advice is to feed, feed, feed, as much as they can. The jaundice can make them sleepy and we used to really struggle to wake him every 2-3 hours to feed.

Aww Lovely first few days were terrifying I'm not going to lie she had to go to hospital for her midwife checks but came on well . I would mention the no poos to your midwife see what she says

Paed team said it no poos by friday tell midwife but the amount of formula he's had surely he's building up for a poo. I'd love to take him out but we're staying in for time being. I'm going to ask visitors to wash hands is there anything else I should do?

Is the community paediatric nurse visiting you at home? Ours did. Also they trained us in infant recussitation. It's lovely coming home, we were in hospital for a month, but tiring. Tge midwives did the night feeds fir me in hospital because I was unfortunately ill and wired to a machine. So getting home and doing twin nights feeds was a killer! We did the gina ford routine after a few more weeks as urs the same as the nicu routine so we just carried on with that

Sounds like very normal. I had a 31 weeker, 3lb 5oz. Spent 3 weeks in intensive care and 6 weeks in hospital. You'd never now. By 6 months she'd caught up weight and development. She's now at university and no health issues at all except possibly not brilliant teeth - or that could just be coincidental.

Definitely stay in until paeds say you can take him out. Wake him for feeding if he's sleepy. And lots of cuddles Grin

As he was born at 34 weeks it's classed as late pre-term, our NHS trust won't investigate babies born at 34 weeks. My DC was born at 33 weeks and to be honest no one has been able to give me any answers as to why it happened early, just extra monitoring of my cervix and monthly swabs for infection.

Your baby sounds like they're doing great! We were back home in 10 days and long before his due date.

Yes my premiee dds also have tooth problems. One has chalky enamel and the other has discolouration.
Chalky tooth one is only allowed one fruit portion per day due to the fruit acid on dentist advice.
