sytron causing pain

Hi,

My DD was born at 36 weeks and is now 9 weeks old. She has abidec and Sytron. She has been extremely windy and crying in pain and I realised she was a lot more settled one weekend when we forgot to take them away with us.

Has anyone else experienced this and are they any alternatives? I am going to ring the doctor later but any personal experiences would be helpful. Thank you.

Hi, my 34 weeker was exactly the same and I was told by her GP that there were no alternatives , I hope you manage to find something as I know how tough it is x

Iron in any form is v hard on their stomachs (and its utterly awful with reflux meds). The only alternative, sadly is a blood transfusion. Poor things do not have it easy :(

Thanks for replying. I am trying to give it to her at a different time of day so it doesn't affect her so badly at night and also after her feed instead of before and it seems a little better.

Sytron is revolting. We gave it in tiny amounts 20 minutes apart. Worked much better.

Our girls were born at 34+5 and weighed 5lb8 & 5lb4. Sytron gave them awful wind and diarrhea. It was so bad on DT2 in particular that I stopped giving it to them after the 3rd day, she cried from the stomach cramps. I spoke with my GP about it and she told me that the SCBU hand this out willy nilly without considering each individual baby. She said that despite being born at 34 weeks, my babies were good weights and she didn't think they needed it. I put mine in the bin. They are now big healthy and happy 7 month olds.

I also stopped giving the vitamins and sytron fairly early on as DD hated them and they made her terrible wind worse. My hospital only prescribed them for babies born at under 34 weeks, DD was born at 34 exactly and a decent weight, so was borderline for needing them anyway according to hospital policy, so I didn't feel too bad about stopping.

I have to say I'm surprised a 36 weeker was even put on Sytron. I get that they dont put down iron stores til the third trimester but a week later and some would class the birth as term. My sisters wee boy was born at that gestation and it was never mentoned. Dd on the other hand was a wee vampire who needed transfusions and 2.5ml of sytron for her first year but she was only 2lbs at birth and has had dozens and dozens of blood tests since... And I think its all of the blood taking that can be such a big cause of prem anaemia. Unless dc has a medical complication or had lots of bloods done I'd be asking to stop the sytron as soon as you can. They dont tend to get used to it unfortunately. If it bothers them it bothers them.

Hmm, I haven't spoken to the doctor as changing the timing has helped a bit with nighttime but she is still very windy.

she is perfectly healthy and growing well but she is exclusively breastfed so doesn't get iron from formula so I guess that might a difference whether she needs it or not.

Theres less iron in bm but the bioavailability is much higher so its pretty even with formula. Dd was bf too but bm is much lower in nutrients than prem formula so she did need the supplements. She only had 10 days in the third trimester to build all her mineral stores.

My 33 weeker has abidec but there has been this ongoing saga about the iron. His neonatal nurse who looked after him in hospital and visited him at home said he qualified for it as babies born under 2kg at birth had it. My son was 1.86kg. However, the paeds at the hospital said he didn't have to have it. This saga went on for weeks and he's ended up not having it .

Hi, just reading this thread with interest. My ds was born at 32+5. He was in scbu for 4 weeks and was discharged with dalivit, frolic acid and Sytron. He is now 9+5 weeks actual.

He is a very windy baby and over the last week has become really unsettled. Very clingy and whiny. Will only sleep being held. Cries for no apparent reason.

After reading the thread I missed his dose of Sytron yesterday and he doesn't seem as bad today. He didn't wake up crying although he was very grunty and groany. Quite throaty but not upset.

I dont want to stop giving him the Sytron if he needs it. He has been taking it since he was born. But not if its making him poorly.

Hi all glad I found this thread. My daughter was born at 31 weeks and was discharged from nicu 3 weeks later. She was only prescribed Abidec which she hated to start with but is getting used to.
At her checkup 2 weeks ago they told me she should've been taking Sytron from 4 weeks and is now on that too.
But what a different baby! She is upset a lot of the time, seems in pain, wants to sleep upright on me during the day, and is only having one or no dirty nappies per day!!!
Is there any alternative to Sytron or what would happen to her development if I stop giving it? :(
