Medical abortion - advice

Hey. I hope I’m posting this in the right place!

I am looking for some advice for my friend. She has recently made the very difficult decision to have a medical abortion and is kind of confused about part of the process.

She said that she took the first tablet and 23 hours later she had some slight bleeding (which the nurse told her to expect) and as she was getting everything sorted to insert the other tablets, she felt a “gush” and felt a large clot come out (sorry - tmi) she went to the toilet where she felt several smaller clots come out (and blood) but she is certain (due to how it looked) that the first clot was the pregnancy.

she was hesitant taking the second lot of tablets until she spoke with the nurse in the morning. When she questioned the nurse on if to take the rest of the medication and asked why she passed clots and the pregnancy after the first tablet (as she wasn’t told this could happen) the nurse replied something like “I just say to people let it be, whatever comes out just let it come out. Take the rest of the tablets”

since this, we have both researched about it and it honestly doesn’t really seem to happen to many people at all, the first tablet is only supposed to stop the pregnancy hormone by the seems and the tablets you insert seem to cause a miscarriage.

Has anyone else passed the pregnancy after the first tablet before?

She has since completed the rest of the tablets and seems to be doing just fine but she is still left feeling confused about what happened following the first tablet.

thanks in advance 😌

Hi, I hope your friend is okay. I’m due to have a medical abortion next week and have signed consent forms etc. my doctor has informed me that there is actually 1 in 20 women who will pass the pregnancy after the first tablet. It’s not too uncommon, although I am sorry this was not explained to your friend as I’m sure she was in shock and unprepared to see and feel what she did.
sending love and strength to your friend, it’s a horrible experience and a really difficult thing to go through x

Hi, thanks for the reply! She’s doing okay thank you. She stayed with me whilst she took the second lot of tablets and my gosh, I’m so glad she was not alone for it!! It broke my heart seeing her like that. It’s not a pleasant experience at all is it?! - well, hers wasn’t to say the least!!

thats good to know that it happens to 1 in 20 woman, that’s reassured her a lot so thank you. This was not explained to her at all. She had a scan and a chat and was out within 10 minutes. I hope your procedure goes okay! Feel free to reach out if you want to chat! All the best for you xx

thank you, I’m really glad you were there for your friend. Having had a previous termination for medical reasons I know that it unfortunately is a horrendous experience. I hope she heals well and she is very lucky to have a friend like you! Thank you so much, I’m terrified but I will be in hospital for it this time where they will manage my pain etc, I’m quite far along which is just devastating but the pregnancy is very high risk and with a 9 month old to look after too, I know this decision is just what needs to be done for my family. It’s a horrible situation to be in, I just hope that one day I will heal from this too. A termination is not something I ever thought I would have to do, it took years for us to conceive our daughter but this time around there are just too many risks involved in continuing.
thank you again and I’m glad I could reassure your friend x

Aww that’s so kind thank you 😌

Oh my goodness. You poor thing. That must be such a devastating decision to have to make especially if you are quite far along 💔 but you’re doing it for the right reasons and you should be kind to yourself. Everything happens for a reason and this will only make you stronger. Do you have support around you? Your 9 month old will no doubt keep you busy and slightly take your mind off it. However don’t forget to take some time for yourself too. Once you’re ready and taken time to process all of this, I’m sure your next bundle of joy will be along in no time. Good luck with everything ❤️❤️ xx
