Medical abortion at home

I just wanted to share my experience of a medical abortion at home.

Like others once I knew this was the route I would be taking, I searched online for others experiences. There are mixed reviews and everyone reacts differently but I’m sharing my experience because I found it helpful to read others.

At my first appointment a scan confirmed what I already knew, I was 8 weeks pregnant. I wasn’t showed the screen or given the option to look, but I also didn’t ask to.

I started the process by taking the first tablet at 9:30am then 24 hours later I started stage 2 by inserting 4 tablets into my vagina.

Within half an hour I started to have a few twinges with blood loss starting shortly after. There were a few large clots, mostly passed when going to the toilet. I didn’t see the actual size but they caused a splash into the water. The blood loss was heavier than a period and consistently heavy for around 7 hours. I used Kotex night time pads from home bargains, I found these were the cheapest for maximum protection.

The one thing I would like to prepare others for is I passed the actual pregnancy with a gush of blood, so this ended up staying in my pad which I saw when going to the toilet. It was smaller in size than the clots I passed and the colour wasn’t red, but white jelly consistency.

After 2 hours I had to dissolve a further two tablets in my mouth. By the this time I knew the pregnancy had passed and the rest would just be blood.

The pain was definitely uncomfortable but manageable with pain relief and a hot water bottle (essential in my opinion). I used condine and ibuprofen, alternating every 2 hours to try and keep topped up. The pain was very much like strong period pains for me, they continued after my bleeding slowed down into the night.

I took the day off work and spent it all in bed watching my favourite shows. I had sugary snacks and lucozade next to me to keep my sugar levels up, as I didn’t want to feel faint or light headed with the amount of blood loss.

Another thing I would like to say is, lots of people on here have described feeling guilty or emotional after this process. But I’d like to reassure the ladies who don’t feel this, that’s it’s ok to be peace with your decision. I know I made the right one for myself and my family.

Hopefully this helps or provides a bit on insight to anyone about to go through this process.

I’ve had a medical abortion, I was 4 weeks exactly.
I am now 2.5 days post this process, I had a good 5 hours of heavy bleeding Friday evening after taking the 4 stage 2 tablets and since then I’ve had next to no bleeding, only spotting/scanting
I have also had cramps and abdominal pain but all low down and I can manage this with hot water bottle etc
just wondered how long you bled for afterwards?
my provider wants me to ring Wednesday if I’ve still not had any heavy bleeding
