Solo parenting, SEN and pregnancy

Hi everyone,

I am seeking advice in regards to my current situation.

I am a single mum and have raised my little boy solo for the past 3 years. He is currently awaiting a diagnosis but has ASD/ADHD and is also pre-verbal. Our relationship is finally at a very healthy stage due to his routine and his love for education.

Over the past 3/4 months I’ve been contemplating another child and a sibling for him and how this would affect us both. The plan was to research into IVF/Sperm Donors etc but I have happened to become pregnant in the mean time. My head and my heart are 50/50 on what to do and I don’t know anyone in my situation. I would be raising both children solo with no support system and my son can be challenging at times. Financially I am okay but I am so unsure whether this is the right time.

Go with your heart. Forget the practicalities and formalities of it all.

I am in a similar situation to you and I went with my heart and I choose to keep my baby regardless of all the other factors and I just know that my existing child will be so, so grateful for a sibling and a constant source of connection to another human being, their sibling especially with SEN. You say he loves education and so does mine which tells me he is a social being and would benefit so much from a sibling to call their best friend.

You say you was looking into the idea before this happens and you was open to it but it is not the right time, but when is it ever the right time? I say go for it but of course it is ultimately your choice but please be very cautious on what you choose to do as this is one of the biggest and most important decisions of your life.
