Abortion at 12 weeks what to expect

I have had 4 miscarriages 1 live birth who is now 2, I don't want anymore but the pill had failed, so abortion is the only route to go down, I'm 11 weeks and only reason it's taken this long is I had a big bleed few weeks ago and thought I had miscarriaged, can you tell me your experiences of the surgery I'm planning on being awake

I was knocked out for mine so don’t know much about the procedure.

However, the staff were LOVELY. They really look after you and are kind and reassuring.

I hope that helps a bit.

Thank you, I have chosen to be awake to get home straight after, heard you should be in and out in an hour fingers crossed.

I don't have any personal experience but when my sister had an abortion I didn't know how to support her so I watched some YouTube videos of people talking about their experiences, how to cope with whichever emotions you'll feel and the actual process/pain levels...etc. You may find that helpful.

Thank you very much, will have a wee look at that.

I was sedated but awake, it was all a blur, tbh. A bit of cramping after for a few days but nothing major (and some bleeding, but I don't remember it being heavy).
I just remember the relief.
Also, everyone was lovely.

How did you feel while having it done if you don't mind me asking, I have been told it's nothing to worry about.

I genuinely can't remember, it's it very much like a dream. I remember a weird feeling but I don't recall any pain etc.

I'm desperately trying to remember how it felt but I just remember being there, a bit of discomfort, and then I don't really remember much after.

I mean this in a comforting 'it was pretty much a non-event' way, and definitely not like 'ooh it's so traumatic I've repressed' way... if that make sense 😅

I just want it over with and get back to being happy with my LG, when I had the bleed it was like a weight had been lifted of my shoulders only to come crashing down again, my LG is my world but I'm now 41 and deffo don't want another one.

I regretfully had one at around this gestation 10
Years ago. It was traumatic. The first pill made me sick as a dog and dangerously dehydrated, then the final pill gave me the same cramps I had in actual labour with my living babies. I had to essentially birth my deceased baby into an adult nappy and felt everything. It was horrific and gave me ptsd.

My sister had a D&C and didn't experience any of that.

Hi. I had one at 12 weeks exactly, I was un sedated so I could drive home after as I hadn't told anyone.

The medication they give you (to open your cervix) made me feel very nauseous, but the D&C wasn't too terrible. The injections into my cervix were uncomfortable, but after that I barely knew what it was happening. The HCA held my hand throughout and was so kind and kept me distracted. All in all it took about 20 minutes (I think) then I was in recovery eating biscuits.

I was able to drive myself home an hour later, the bleeding and cramping was like a very heavy period.

In summary, it was a bit shit...but ultimately I managed it alone. I hope yours goes as well as these things can 🩷

Thank you very much for this, does it take long from taking the tablets to you go to have it done, glad yours went as easy as something like this can go.

You're very welcome.

I genuinely can't remember how long exactly, sorry it was about 8 years ago now. I can say I know I was there long enough I was worried about getting a parking ticket as I'd over stayed the three hours for my bay 🙃

(I didn't, I think the universe knew it was a bit of a shitty day)

A long time a friend had one done. Not in the UK. I was there holding her hand as it was being done as the father was nowhere to be found. A lot of the people waiting had somebody with them - either a female friend or relative or in some cases a man who I assumed to be the father. She seemed to be in some discomfort rather than any prolonged pain but it was quick. I was driving and tbh I don't know whether she would have been in a good state to drive. It wasn't improved of course by a bunch of religious zealots picketing the premises waving placards.

PeloMom · 16/11/2024 01:15

I had one ages ago. I remember hearing the doctors talking but remember it all a bit like a dream. Was home the same afternoon and was told to rest. No pain or anything. Was fully functional the next day after a good night sleep. Light period-like bleeding for a couple of days. Overall positive experience.
i was on my own. Didn’t drive, took a taxi home. They were ok with me being discharged without another person present.

Where you awake when having it done, and was it the suction you got it you don't mind me asking.

This was also my experience, I was lay on a table in a room with some very kind nurses and doctors and given some medication through a cannula, it must have momentarily knocked me out as I don’t remember a thing or any pain, just one minute she was putting the drugs in and the next she was helping me up and guiding me into a recovery room where I lay on a recliner chair with a load of other ladies for about an hour and was given a magazine, drink and a biscuit. Then I went home and had some very light bleeding, like a light period for a few days. I don’t remember it being particularly painful.

OP, can you make sure you get a surgical one? That’s what I had at around 10 weeks, I believe the one where you take the pills is more painful and traumatic. I’m not sure if they’d even let you do the pills one at this stage. I wasn’t given any pills before my surgical ablation and it was done very quickly. To say I’d “recommend” it seems wrong but it was absolutely fine and I’m not traumatised.

To answer on PP behalf, I had the suction method and must have been “awake” but the sedation made it feel like I was briefly asleep so don’t remember any of it.

I'm believe it will be the surgical route, think you can only have tablets up to ten weeks, just worried about the op itself, hoping to be in and out in no time, I'm 1000% sure it's what I want so can't wait to get it over with and start to look forward to Christmas with my LG, thank you so much for replying means a lot.

I had the suction one at about 8 weeks and chose no sedation for the same reason as you. It was uncomfortable - it felt like very bad period pain while the procedure was being done, but it was over pretty quickly. A HCA held my hand and was really lovely and reassuring throughout. My partner had dropped me off and gone to pick our daughter up from nursery. They both then picked me up. I needed a heat pack and painkillers for the rest of the afternoon/evening, but it was all manageable.

No problem, with the mild sedation I was in and out in maybe 2 hours and was perfectly functional the same day and definitely the next day. Partners were not allowed in the clinic I went to but maybe this varies.
