Abortion at 12 weeks what to expect

I have had 4 miscarriages 1 live birth who is now 2, I don't want anymore but the pill had failed, so abortion is the only route to go down, I'm 11 weeks and only reason it's taken this long is I had a big bleed few weeks ago and thought I had miscarriaged, can you tell me your experiences of the surgery I'm planning on being awake

Sorry no experience to add but just wanted to say that these kind of threads are MN at their best.

No judgement or twisting just women being kind to one another.

Good luck OP, hope you have a 'positive' experience and have a lovely Christmas with your DD 🌷

I had the suction one at about 8 weeks and chose no sedation for the same reason as you. It was uncomfortable - it felt like very bad period pain while the procedure was being done, but it was over pretty quickly. A HCA held my hand and was really lovely and reassuring throughout. My partner had dropped me off and gone to pick our daughter up from nursery. They both then picked me up. I needed a heat pack and painkillers for the rest of the afternoon/evening, but it was all manageable.

Thank you very much for tell me your experience.

No problem, with the mild sedation I was in and out in maybe 2 hours and was perfectly functional the same day and definitely the next day. Partners were not allowed in the clinic I went to but maybe this varies.

That's what I want in and out in no time, and to be able to function after it.

I had one at 13 weeks (MMC) and I opted for a D and C (suction) because I wanted it over quickly and couldn’t face taking a medication to stimulate a miscarriage.

I wasn’t in any physical pain - during or after. (The emotional side was a whole different ball game but you’ll know that from your MC experiences too). Where will you be having the procedure? As I was under antenatal at time, I had it in hospital on a gynae ward but the staff were still lovely.

Best wishes.

I'm getting it done in an nhs setting so no private clinic, after all my losses I was so happy when my LG came I was one and done so failed pill happened, I'm now 41 and happy with how my life is, my LG is healthy and happy and that's all I could ask for, another baby would not fit in, I'm going to ask about the coil when it's over. Thank you for your reply and so sorry about your loss and hope you have your rainbow baby.

I have done my homework, I don't want another baby why I was taking the pill, I wouldn't just bring it in to the world to resent it as its not wanted, so ending it is a better option than it being resented.

You don’t need to justify yourself OP.

No judgement here. Good luck and take care of yourself.

The poster asked what to expect.

@Babyghirl My rainbow baby is now 10! I had the coil fitted after he was born (on my second one now). Not had any issue with it at all, I don’t have any bleeding at all!

MrsMurphyIWish · 16/11/2024 08:38

@Babyghirl Ignore those comments. Accidents happen and you are being very sensible, and we are lucky to live in a country that values female body autonomy.

She's done her research on the procedure, and now she's asking for personal experiences of actually having that procedure done. Surely you can grasp that?

What a grim and unnecessary reply

I can’t offer advice OP as my abortion was early on and I had the pills. I just wanted to wish you all the best, I hope it goes as well as it can ❤️

cloudydays2 · 16/11/2024 08:40

‘Hopefully you won’t catch sight of it’ is completely uncalled for, I think it’s obvious the op just wants to know how people felt being awake during this procedure not what it looks like or its size.

I see. So you actually did understand, and were simply being disingenuous? That makes more sense.

Load of rubbish, you definitely won’t catch sight of it, you won’t see a thing, the staff are very good. And a 12 week fetus is 5cm not 10cm so you’re just posting rubbish.

I'm on about the surgery itself not before hand, I wanted to hear stories of people who had been through it awake and what to expect, you can read to your blue in the face but won't ever know what to expect until your hear from people who has been through the surgery.

You are the only person on this whole thread who has said anything nasty. You must be very proud of yourself. Have a blessed day won't you.

Hannahthepink · 16/11/2024 08:49

I had a surgical at 12 weeks. I had a general anaesthetic so can't remember any of the procedure, but honestly, the whole day was really calm and fine. I still remember the staff for their incredible kindness and care both before and afterwards. Afterwards, I was not in much pain at all, just felt like normal period cramps and there wasn't much bleeding either. I remember popping into Asda on the way home and feeling fine. I worked the next day (with hindsight, I should really have booked this off), but even being on my feet in a shop all day was manageable.
I felt quite emotional for a couple of days, but I actually think that this was the anaesthetic rather than anything to do with the procedure itself as I've felt similar after other operations. Other than that, pure relief at it all being over.
Take care of yourself.

Everybody knows what you mean, including this poster. They're just a dick posting propaganda because they don't understand healthcare. I'm 100% sure it'll all go well for you x
