Failed abortion at 10 weeks. Very difficult to access abortion post 10 weeks

Has anybody else experienced a failed medical abortion (the one which you take pills for)?
Mine failed after rather painful contractions and passing of a big clot. I was still feeling very unwell (severe pregnancy sickness and high blood pressure: my reasons for not being able to continue with the pregnancy to begin with) after the pills, went back to the clinic who confirmed I was still pregnant.
Places readily offer the pills 10 weeks and under but after that date is has been so HARD to get help with a surgical abortion. Places wait weeks to get back to you just to say they don't receive funding for surgical abortion (which is required after 10 weeks) or their nearest clinic is in Bolton... I'm from London.
Something very weird is going on here and I am so unwell.... GP's can't do anything as its all dealt with by outside organisations now. I'm now 13 weeks 5 days and, as I say, desperately ill being told my blood pressure is so high I have to go to A&E and living off prochlorperazine to stop the sickness and NOBODY is helping me. I'm doing all of this with a bouncy, autistic 4 year old and I don't know what to do 😪
Anybody else experienced this? Any advice?

Thanks, Mums ❤

I had one at Marie Stopes in Ealing, think I was about 11wks. Didn’t have to pay.

I'm so sorry this is happening to you. When I read the title of this I thought it must be America. This is no doubt the result of what this awful government has done to the UK

I wonder if it would have been more humane and helpful then to say you'll PM her and ask if she would share her details so that you could help, you clearly know people in the business as it were, so you can make the relevant enquiries perhaps.

This.

When I went through BPAS there was no "getting back to me", was immediately booked in to see a nurse on the very first call and booked in for the surgical during the meeting. Done.

Marie Stopes has 2 that offer surgical abortion within London. Several more just outside London.
Could you try calling them again?
Their website says book in for a consultation online and they'll get back to you within 48hrs. Also they have a live chat

gestroopd · 03/07/2024 09:12

So sorry you're going through this extra stress at a stressful time when you're also unwell!!

I really hope you can get care and quickly. Regardless of what the system is, it's clearly confusing (at best) and unhelpful.

This is just awful. Why are so many different organisations involved? OP I’m so sorry. This must be so upsetting. This whole ‘wrong door’ and very tight criteria is just awful. It should be that you are looked after by the same team right the way through. Is this because the NHS in England has been parcelled out to private companies? I hope you get what you need.

@france1926 OP isn't attacking or misrepresenting NUPAS.

She's saying she's struggling to access abortion and needs advice on how to do it better.

When you are sick as a dog, scared, and wrangling an autistic child you don't always find it easy to get through the contact systems available.

You use online forms instead of the phone because phone+autistic toddler=chaos.

@user1490654992 have you checked your spam folder? Maybe they have got back to you!

Thanks for saying, I dont think I attacked NUPAs either. They failed to mention where I could get help past 10 weeks. Prior to that they were helpful. It's just facts. Not a slight against them.

Sorry if I've missed it but when did you contact MSI? They usually take 48 hours to get back to you.
I'm actually from Bolton and wasn't aware that anywhere here offered surgical, I was offered Manchester or Leeds (or further out) for my surgical management.

So sorry you're dealing with this OP. X

BagFullOfNoodles · 03/07/2024 09:21

There's an MSI in Buckhurst hill that does surgical, I took a friend there. Might be worth sticking a film on for DC and trying to call rather than using the web form given the situation you are in. Not sure what part of London you are in but Buckhurst hill has got to be easier to get to than Bolton

Unfortunately many places are restricted in offering surgical abortions, often due to lack of willing staff (understandably). You may have to travel if this is what you want

Why understandable? It’s the same procedure as removing a wanted pregnancy when surgical intervention is needed.

StormingNorman · 03/07/2024 12:56

@user1490654992 You need to get down to St Thomas’s today or tomorrow if you can.

Are your health conditions complicating the procedure perhaps? It does sound as if the services are being unusually slow in getting back to you and your options are restricted.

anonhop · 03/07/2024 13:01

@StormingNorman without wishing to derail the thread/ distract OP, I think it's understandable that some staff wouldn't wish to take part! OP says she's had her 12 week scan. Having seen many 12 week scans, I can understand why at this stage, some staff put that boundary in place for moral/ emotional reasons.

As others have said, OP has options to access abortion if she wishes & there's lots of info on this thread.

Bramblecrumble22 · 03/07/2024 14:16

Hi op, hope you get it sorted. I think you have lots of advice, different telephone numbers and a and e recomendations. It's easy to be paranoid and suspicious that pro lifers are being your lack of medical care. However, it's more likely overall NHS failings.....I'd hope.

mimiscards · 05/07/2024 22:48

My friend had health conditions that prevented her from having a termination at an abortion clinic so she had hers at her local hospital instead. Is this a route you would consider trying? Maybe speak to your GP first and they can signpost you and help speed up the process for you given your gestation and health issues? Best of luck to you

theprincessthepea · 07/07/2024 16:06

You may have already sorted this but I know that these days it’s dealt with by borough under the NHS. Each borough has a very different way of referring and have dedicated hospitals that perform surgical.
