Failed abortion at 10 weeks. Very difficult to access abortion post 10 weeks

Has anybody else experienced a failed medical abortion (the one which you take pills for)?
Mine failed after rather painful contractions and passing of a big clot. I was still feeling very unwell (severe pregnancy sickness and high blood pressure: my reasons for not being able to continue with the pregnancy to begin with) after the pills, went back to the clinic who confirmed I was still pregnant.
Places readily offer the pills 10 weeks and under but after that date is has been so HARD to get help with a surgical abortion. Places wait weeks to get back to you just to say they don't receive funding for surgical abortion (which is required after 10 weeks) or their nearest clinic is in Bolton... I'm from London.
Something very weird is going on here and I am so unwell.... GP's can't do anything as its all dealt with by outside organisations now. I'm now 13 weeks 5 days and, as I say, desperately ill being told my blood pressure is so high I have to go to A&E and living off prochlorperazine to stop the sickness and NOBODY is helping me. I'm doing all of this with a bouncy, autistic 4 year old and I don't know what to do 😪
Anybody else experienced this? Any advice?

Thanks, Mums ❤

NUpAS do offer surgical abortions

How does a Surgical Abortion Work?
There are different types of surgical abortion. The different procedures depend on your health, how many weeks you have been pregnant, and your personal choice.
The methods of surgical abortion offered at NUPAS are:
Manual Vacuum Aspiration (up to 14 weeks of pregnancy).
Dilatation and Evacuation (from 14 weeks – 23 weeks and 6 days of pregnancy).

There are also different anaesthetic options, which depend on your health, how many weeks you have been pregnant, and personal choice.
The anaesthetic options offered at NUPAS are:
Local Anaesthetic – Awake during treatment (up to 10 weeks of pregnancy).
Conscious Sedation – Awake but drowsy during treatment (up to 13 weeks and 6 days of pregnancy).
General Anaesthetic – Asleep during treatment.

It sounds so hard op. What a nightmare to be in this position. I think the suggestions above should help, and I hope it goes well for you the second time around.

france1926 · 03/07/2024 08:04

k. I called them after a week to which they said it would need to be surgical as I was over ten weeks and they (NUPAS) didn't offer that

but NUPAS do

NuPAS don't help past 10 weeks

MSI and BAPAS haven't got back to me

NuPAS do

and i have just shown you that

I think in general I would phone a clinic/company rather than waiting for them to reply to an email. As you say every day counts. Wishing you well OP.

You mentioned funding Is it that you are looking for a free service? That’s why you were offered an out of area service?

For speed could you pay for it? In the long term would be worth it. Marie stopes have multiple clinics across London, with same week appointments, would be all done very quickly, maybe ask the father to contribute to the cost? Your health is important, your blood pressure a concern.

Either St Thomas' or private are my only options left. They are pricey but worth it. I will have to have a borrow from friends if St Thomas' cannot help.
Thank you ❤

Yes. It's the same as the online form. A first c9btact person books you for a telephone consult with a midwife. Who then tells you post ten weeks you only have Bolton as an option for free care.
Phone, email, booking forms..... its all the same... waiting & waiting.

I don’t think people realise how difficult it is to access these services. Surgical abortions you will often need to travel hundreds of miles and even the pills you may need to travel for a clinic that prescribes them. Paying privately (for pills) last summer my closest option was Somerset and I live in Wales.
