Failed abortion at 10 weeks. Very difficult to access abortion post 10 weeks

Has anybody else experienced a failed medical abortion (the one which you take pills for)?
Mine failed after rather painful contractions and passing of a big clot. I was still feeling very unwell (severe pregnancy sickness and high blood pressure: my reasons for not being able to continue with the pregnancy to begin with) after the pills, went back to the clinic who confirmed I was still pregnant.
Places readily offer the pills 10 weeks and under but after that date is has been so HARD to get help with a surgical abortion. Places wait weeks to get back to you just to say they don't receive funding for surgical abortion (which is required after 10 weeks) or their nearest clinic is in Bolton... I'm from London.
Something very weird is going on here and I am so unwell.... GP's can't do anything as its all dealt with by outside organisations now. I'm now 13 weeks 5 days and, as I say, desperately ill being told my blood pressure is so high I have to go to A&E and living off prochlorperazine to stop the sickness and NOBODY is helping me. I'm doing all of this with a bouncy, autistic 4 year old and I don't know what to do 😪
Anybody else experienced this? Any advice?

Thanks, Mums ❤

I agree , leave the poor woman alone !!!!
@user1490654992 I am so sorry you are going through this .
Try St Thomas's, they are great

Alwaystired2023 · 03/07/2024 08:25

OP not sure where you are in London but excellent early pregnancy units in Lewisham hospital and Kings - you can walk in and wait.

What you are going through sounds ridiculous I'm so sorry

Yes. They say to do online booking form.
I tried the online chats too.

That isn't true. They will arrange an appointment on the phone. I can't speculate as to whether the appointment would be local or convenient but they absolutely will book one there and then on the phone.

no she’s gone in to say that nupas said only bolton does surgical abortions
then said only bolton does free surgical abortions

but actually if entitled to nhs… all free at nupas

But she did say in her OP that she had been waiting weeks for people to get back to her, she wasnt being dishonest and the responses on here are inappropriate

Its all very well for posters to say this and that, but if thats not the information given to the OP by the actual emails and organisations/GP themselves its unhelpful. We've all been in situations where 'this should happen' isnt happening because the chat bot, or call centre person says 'this isnt available'.

I dont know about the specific organisations listed either but often these days there is NO way of phoning someone anymore, its all done by online portal or email contact or online form, you dont get to speak to a human and just have your form go off into the ether and just have to wait.

BPAS did my surgical abortion in Reading. Not idea I know but only 20 mins from Paddington if that is doable?

soupfiend · 03/07/2024 08:28

france1926 · 03/07/2024 08:23

because the OP is saying factually incorrect things about nupas
which orhers may read and believe

Perhaps someone would like to ring them today for the OP and say they are rining on behalf of a friend, out line the vague situation and see if there are surgical free abortions available for appointment in London

exactly

i hate that this thread is giving out incorrect information about this critical service

Thisoldheartofmine · 03/07/2024 08:32

I don't think it's helpful to be arguing details with the OP especially in such a hostile way - "not telling the truth","didn't put that in your first post"
If you don't believe her why not just leave them thread?
It's too sensitive and distressing a situation to be treated as an interrogation.
Maybe the OP is making things up /got stuff wrong . What if she hasn't?
And yes, I'm being the thread police .

Ploddingalong679 · 03/07/2024 08:33

Hi OP, I'm sorry that you're going through this and not sure why some people are being so combative in their responses.

I know this doesn't address the abortion problem, but I've been suffering from extreme pregnancy sickness so have taken a cocktail of anti sickness meds. If you need something stronger, please ask your GP to prescribe ondansatron. It's a great anti-sickness med, although it does cause constipation too, so at the same time ask to be prescribed lactolose/laxido or something to avoid that. Another great medication is Xonvea, but they usually try other options before moving to that. The early pregnancy unit at St thomas' can also prescribe anti-sickness meds if you end up there. Please also be prepared for several hours waiting. If you have your toddler with you, take lots of entertainment/snacks etc. They do have a phone line which you can call in advance to book in, but often don't answer it. So if you find yourself calling and waiting for a long time, I used to just head in and book in when I got there.

I had previously had to access abortion care due to severe sickness which triggered another serious, long-term health condition. Thankfully the medical route did work for me, I would have been at an absolute loss if it hadn't and don't know how I would have coped with even one more week of my symptoms, so you have my complete sympathy.

NuPAS do

and i have just shown you that

Why are you so determined to prove the OP wrong? It feels like an attack on someone who is clearly in a vulnerable place.

anonhop · 03/07/2024 08:42

Unfortunately many places are restricted in offering surgical abortions, often due to lack of willing staff (understandably). You may have to travel if this is what you want

RampantKrampus · 03/07/2024 08:44

Theunamedcat · 03/07/2024 08:22

FUCKS SAKE can we quit with the pile on she is entitled to a free abortion she shouldn't have to "wait" or travel to Bolton not everyone has money they can pull out there arse she is sick not irresponsible

100% this.

Abortion is HEALTHCARE. Time sensitive healthcare at that.

I’m not sure the way to do that is to attack someone many times on a thread where they are clearly very stressed. The OP has shared the information that she had. You could be much nicer and advise others to check for themselves. This is a real person who is struggling, she doesn’t need to be repeatedly told she is wrong.

because i work for a linked service to NUPAS

and i can honestly reassure anyone worried and researching and coming across this thread that a lot of what the OP has said about NUPAS simply isn’t true

countbackfromten · 03/07/2024 08:57

Hi @user1490654992 - where abouts in London do you live? Because there will be NHS services you can refer into as well. For example in north west London you can refer into services offered by the NHS. I can help you search if you need it https://www.nwlondonicb.nhs.uk/your-health-services/abortion?back_cID=286

(I am an anaesthetist who regularly does a list for a surgical termination. I’m so sorry you are in this situation and feel abandoned)

Abortion - self referral services :: North West London ICS

You can book an abortion for yourself, or you can ask your GP or sexual health clinic for a referral to an abortion service in North West London.

But the OP is sharing her experience. You are not helping anyone, least of all other vulnerable women who might be reading this thread. All they will think is, fuck I don't want to experience that kind of pile on so I won't ever ask for advice/support/help on MN

You can post the correct information for everyone without attacking every single thing a clearly very vulnerable, stressed woman who is dealing with this trauma along with caring for an autistic child. Your approach is actually quite shocking, just have a read through what you’ve written & how you’ve written it as you’re coming off as a dick even though I believe that’s not your intention. Just post the info with an attack, it’s not right to behave that way at all

france1926 · 03/07/2024 08:58

i will leave

but anyone coming fresh

please do call NUPAS and if you are entitled to nhs treatment you will not been to pay for a surgical abortion

soupfiend · 03/07/2024 08:59

I wonder if it would have been more humane and helpful then to say you'll PM her and ask if she would share her details so that you could help, you clearly know people in the business as it were, so you can make the relevant enquiries perhaps.

NUpAS do offer surgical abortions

How does a Surgical Abortion Work?
There are different types of surgical abortion. The different procedures depend on your health, how many weeks you have been pregnant, and your personal choice.
The methods of surgical abortion offered at NUPAS are:
Manual Vacuum Aspiration (up to 14 weeks of pregnancy).
Dilatation and Evacuation (from 14 weeks – 23 weeks and 6 days of pregnancy).

There are also different anaesthetic options, which depend on your health, how many weeks you have been pregnant, and personal choice.
The anaesthetic options offered at NUPAS are:
Local Anaesthetic – Awake during treatment (up to 10 weeks of pregnancy).
Conscious Sedation – Awake but drowsy during treatment (up to 13 weeks and 6 days of pregnancy).
General Anaesthetic – Asleep during treatment.

Unfortunately I've recently had to look into abortion services. There really aren't many that offer surgical which shocked me.

I used NUPAS and requested a surgical abortion...... they told me the only clinic they have for surgical is in Bolton. They have numerous clinics all over that offer the medical abortion.

MSI had lots of clinics, but the closet that offer surgical were 2 hours away.

BPAS was my local that offered surgical and was within walking distance, but no longer have NHS funding.

OP, your options are limited. You either need to keep ringing and hounding BPAS/MSI, or travel to Bolton. Unless the EPU can help.

KeirSpoutsTwaddle · 03/07/2024 09:04

@france1926 OP isn't attacking or misrepresenting NUPAS.

She's saying she's struggling to access abortion and needs advice on how to do it better.

When you are sick as a dog, scared, and wrangling an autistic child you don't always find it easy to get through the contact systems available.

You use online forms instead of the phone because phone+autistic toddler=chaos.

@user1490654992 have you checked your spam folder? Maybe they have got back to you!
