Help - has medical abortion not worked ?

Hi everyone,

Unfortunately I recently had a medical abortion. This was due to many reasons, one being that our contraception had failed, & definitely wasn’t an easy decision I was 5 weeks and 4 days.

I took my first pill on Thursday night followed by 4 misoprostol tablets on Saturday morning. Prior to taking the tablets I took ibroprofen & cocodomol. I experienced the mildest of cramping & no bleeding for 3 1/2 hours. I then went to the toilet and passed a few clots, I checked one of my clots which was a brownish/ grey colour - I noticed a translucent patch that had something inside too (not sure if this could have been the sac or tissue)

Due to the minimal bleeding experienced, I took another 2 misoprostol tablets under my tongue and let them dissolve for 30 minutes.

Throughout the course of the day I experienced no heavy bleeding, hardly any cramping (definitely not to the extent I was expecting) - I passed a few clots but only when sitting on the toilet. I’m now 40 hours after taking my first misoprostol tablet and I still have not had a heavy bleed. I have had some bleeding today but again, minimal & my pads are clean.

Does this sound like the abortion has not worked ? Has anyone experienced this and it has gone on to be successful ? I am terrified this is not the end, also very stressed at the thought of it being incomplete.

I had to retake the pill 3 times due to retained tissue over 3 weeks . The next two times were no where near as bad as the very first one I had to do . But on the final 3rd time I took the tablets I had to take same as you minimal bleed and cramps . 4 days later bleeding had stopped and then I done a walk with a friend gentle stroll but still done 10k steps at about 11am then at 5pm I had this awful pain and felt rush and I had soaked through to my trousers got home and I clot a lot . Then stopped . I went for a scan on Thursday and told the doctor and she said my body had naturally passed it 4 days later after the 3rd set of tablets . And my scan was clear. Don't panic your body may just need a bit more time to pass it and I found gentle waking helped once there was no pain when walking but I'm not a doctor just my experience so reach out to a doctor for advice if needs be but don't panic xxx

Thank you so much for replying, I’ve woke up this morning with blood so potentially could be starting now. How long did you bleed heavily for after your blood came ? Thanks again !

So it wasn't untill 4 days after the 3rd time I took the pill I bled heavily and it was only once when I passed the clot then the bleeding went back to medium amount of blood for 3 days then light for about 2 and stopped. Try not to stress and get a scan if you can and see if anything is left but I found gentle walking got my body to remove the last piece naturally. I hope your okay and try not so stress too much .
