Positive test 5 weeks after abortion

Hi all,

Desperately seeking advice on this from anyone that may be able to help.

I made the difficult decision in March to have a termination for several reasons.

I took the high sensitivity pregnancy test that they gave me 3 weeks later to confirm that the termination was successful, which it was.

Fast forward to today, 5 weeks after the termination and 2 weeks after it was confirmed by the test I was given - I have had a positive pregnancy test. I have taken two, both are positive.

I am wondering if there could still be levels of hcg in my urine 5 weeks after a termination? Could this be a false positive from the previous pregnancy? Or could this mean that I have gotten pregnant again since the termination?

I am so stressed about this, I have tried calling the clinic where I had my appointment but they are closed now until Tuesday so thought I'd come here to see if anyone had experienced similar.

I am on the contraceptive pill btw (I am not that careless!)

Hey, I haven't had this experience myself during a termination but I didn't want to read and run. If the post-termination test was negative and now you are getting positive results, I would think this is a new pregnancy. But it's best to call the clinic and explain your situation to them to be safe to rule out remaining tissues from your previous pregnancy. If you don't mind me asking, how dark are the lines on your tests and are they getting darker? Although sometimes that isn't always something to rely on! X

I hope you get answers soon x

@mimiscards thanks so much for your reply, I am going to call the clinic on Tuesday and see what they say about it.

I've attached a pic of the test, both tests were showing up like this! When I tested positive back in March i was 5 weeks and the tests were much darker than this.

If I have actually gotten pregnant again this quickly while being on the pill then I'll be shocked! Will keep you updated x

Good luck for Tuesday! 🤞🏼

The second line on your test is quite dark isn't it. I would think it's too dark to be due to leftover pregnancy hormones from the abortion. Have you tested again since then at all?

How confusing for you. I know you've probably been as safe as you possibly can be and these things just happen! I hope everything makes sense for you soon x

@mimiscards thank you so much, and no I haven't tested again since. I had some cheap ones here so tested out of curiosity really, and I haven't had my period since the termination (but that can be normal) It's been 5 weeks now so I wasn't expecting it to be positive it's just confused me.

I've been taking my pill ever since which makes it even more confusing, i don't know if it's the universe trying to tell me something!!

I hope you're able to get hold of someone at the clinic today. I wouldn't expect to see a positive result like that 5 weeks after termination either so I understand how you feel! But at the same time I don't want to worry you. I imagine they will possibly offer you a scan so you can fully understand what's going on. Fingers crossed they can get you in ASAP as this must be going round and round in your mind! X

@mimiscards I decided to take a clear blue yesterday which showed pregnant 1-2 weeks. My clear blue before the termination was 3+ weeks. I have read conflicting things online saying that clear blue can be very sensitive so the hormones from previous pregnancy could be picked up so I really don't know.

I'm going to phone the clinic when they open at 9am. I'm thinking the same, I just want to see somebody so that I know exactly what is going on. It's the not knowing which is stressful! X

I'm going for a blood test on Thursday which should determine if it's a new pregnancy or not, the nurse on the phone seems to think that it will be a new one but we will see x

I'm glad you've been able to get yourself booked in for an appointment. How are you feeling about it all? X

lolorin · 07/05/2024 12:11

@mimiscards thank you, me too! It's strange because at first I was a bit all over the place but now I'm thinking it is what it is, and if it is a new pregnancy then maybe it's meant to be. I know that I wouldn't get another termination anyway. At least I'll have answers in a few days.

Thank you for your support on here, it has been super helpful and nice to have someone to talk toSmile x

I'm glad your thoughts have settled and you're feeling ok about the situation. It must have come as a massive shock but you sound like you're making the best of it. Hoping these next few days fly by for you so you can get your answers. You're welcome! I'm glad I could be here for you! X

@mimiscards it was a shock, but at the same time I was just assuming it was still positive from back in March so I was just passing it off as that. I've read conflicting things online so I don't have a clue, the positive clear blue 1-2 weeks made me think oh wait a minute maybe I am😂

We will soon find out, and I'll let you know how I get off at my appointment!x

Hey, how are you doing @lolorin? X

lolorin · 10/05/2024 13:51

@mimiscards hey😊 sorry I forgot to update yesterday! They said that the hcg levels in my blood are low so it's unlikely to be a new pregnancy, I have to go back next Thursday for another blood test but it's looking like it's just left over from the previous pregnancy! Xx

I'm glad they are double checking your HCG levels for you. I hope you're feeling alright? I know the whirlwind of emotions that come after a termination. Take care xx

lolorin · 11/05/2024 11:53

Thank you. Yes I feel much better now, if it was to be a new pregnancy I would keep it as I wouldn't want to put myself through it again especially so soon, but I feel better knowing that I am unlikely to even have to make that decision now.

Sorry that you know the feeling too, it's not nice xx

I'm so glad you're feeling much better! What a relief to know what's happening. I get exactly what you mean. Life is so difficult especially when we are faced with these decisions out of the blue. You're doing so well, take care of yourself. I'm always here if you want to talk xx

Ok so this happened to me. My son was 5 months old and we found out I was pregnant. We made the decision to terminate the pregnancy. I took the medication and expelled the tissue etc, however a few weeks later I still ‘felt’ pregnant. Turns out I was. I took the pills when I was 7 weeks pregnant, when I went for an ultrasound, the fetus was measuring 12 weeks. The medication hadn’t worked and it carried on growing however passed. I had to have a surgical termination.
