Edwards syndrome

I have no idea where to put this but need the traffic. I have name changed.

At my 20 week scan some major abnormalities were found. We are looking at a very severe case of Edwards and have been recommended to terminate.

I will be 21, maybe 22 weeks at this point. Does anyone have any experience of what baby will look like at this gestation? I don't know whether I want to see baby and I'm not in the right mindset to be googling for myself.

I'm not looking for opinions on whether termination is the right option, just on what to expect after birth, please.

Hi, OP. We hope you don't mind, but due to the sensitive nature of your post, we've moved your thread to Pregnancy Choices and hope you find some good advice here.

Oh sweetheart. I can’t answer your question but I’m so sorry. My gut tells me you will want to see your baby but I don’t think there’s a right or wrong in this situation.

I'm so sorry. Have you discussed it with your midwife? It might not be something you can truly decide until the birth, I imagine you won't know what you can handle until the moment arrives and hopefully your midwife can offer guidance and support. I think that I would want to see my baby if I were in your shoes but there really is no right or wrong, and if faced with the reality I might not feel able to I suspect I might find it too much to bear. Hugs, such a difficult situation to be in x

I haven't spoken to my midwife, I presume I'll be allocated a bereavement midwife at some point. My local area have all the hospitals maternity care at one hospital, but I've had scans and consultant treatment at two other hospitals so it's all quite disjointed. I am waiting for a call from the consultant on Monday so I will ask him about that then.

im so sorry that you are going through this. I have never been through this so cannot share any first hand experience.

The NHS website gives a description of gestation week by week which is text only - no pics, not even a diagram. I know some babies can be born at week 23 and look like very tiny babies.

I am sure you will make the right choice for you at the time and wishing you all strength needed to get through this xx
