Worried after Surgical abortion

Hi there

Just looking for any advice, experience if I
may.

I underwent a surgical termination by local anaesthetic on 16 Feb. All went ok and didn’t have much bleeding immediately after the procedure , however had a lighter than my usual fresh bleed around 8 days later that tapered off and turned to brown spotting.

However i started bleeding again 2 nights ago fresh red blood (sorry TMI) with mild cramps and its not showing signs of slowing, currently like a period flow.

I went to my GP today who then sent me over to my local emergency gynae department as my blood pressure was low and she thought I may have an infection and they done a pregnancy test and took bloods. They told me my pregnancy test was negative and due to this they will not scan me and my bloods were normal, no indication of infection.

Due to my health anxiety i wasn’t convinced and took a pregnancy test at home and its a very strong positive still, so
im back to square one and searching everywhere for help.

I have slight cramps that feel like period pain but im worried that I have retained products and and scared of infection.

doesn’t help that i regularly take blood thinners due to a clotting disorder which may increase flow but the fact its bright red worries me.

So sorry for the long post but just am worried

Thanks

Sorry I don’t have experience with surgical abortion but I just wanted to say that home pregnancy tests will show a positive for some length of time even after an abortion. However, if you fear retained products then press on your GP to refer you to EPU for a scan, if going private is an option it is worth it for peace of mind x

Hi there @LemonInaMug

Thank you so much for your time and reply, it is appreciated.

I will call my GP in the morning to see if they can refer for a scan.

Thank you x

How did you get on x

Hi there @LemonInaMug

I went back to the hospital and advised that my home test was still positive and they took blood and stated my levels were 57, have to repeat the bloods on friday to see if they are reducing.

The bleeding seems to have tapered off and the place that i had the procedure carried out have put me in for a scan tomorrow also, so appears to be moving in the right direction albeit a bit slow.

I do hope its as you mentioned that its just hormones still throwing up a positive test as i cant face going through the procedure again.

Thank you for checking in xx

Good luck with the scan and hope it all goes well and there’s nothing to worry about so you can put this all behind you x

@Carterhatch44 hi, I know this is a old post, but going through similiar at present. Had my surgical termination on 13th, so 4 days ago - have had only very minor brown spotting untill this evening. Bad cramps and bright red very heavy flow now. I’m also on blood thinners, and also had the copper coil fitted at the same time as TOP.
would you mind me asking what happened after your last update please? Worrying I may have retained pregnancy- would just be my luck 😢 thank you!!

Hi there

I had a scan as i was still bleeding heavily but no retained products were found and I just had to let nature take its course. Bleeding took around 2-3 weeks to fully stop but it did get gradual over time. As im on blood thinners, I think that was the reason for the heavy flow, but obviously if you are worried about anything, dont hesitate to go back to your GP or clinic where you were treated m.

Hey,
I’ve been told by medical professional that copper coil can cause bleeding to be prolonged when fitted after termination!
