Retained products - anyone got any experience?

Hi 😊. I had a surgical termination 3 weeks ago, bleeding didn't stop & had a scan yesterday & found retained products, they suggested I'd need a repeat procedure due to the amount (not sure if there was loads but obviously enough!). However as they only do surgery in my local bpas clinic every couple of weeks it was either go elsewhere meaning at least a 2 hour drive each way or wait until next week when the surgeon is next there. my preference was to wait as i'm feeling ok - they agreed.

I've been given misoprostol to try & help expel it over the next week & then need a rescan next week with the procedure to follow straight away if it's still there.

Just wondering if anyone else had been in the same position & whether you needed the procedure again or if it happened naturally / with help of misoprostol. I'm not really worried either way, if I need a repeat surgical then so be it but if I don't then great however the not knowing is driving me mad so just seeing if anyone else has experienced this 😊

Hi I'm going through this right now and waiting for a third MVA!! How did things turn out for you? Are you all ok now?

Jsh125 · 26/10/2022 12:02

Hi 😊. Oh my gosh - 3 times! So sorry you're going through this. Do you know when your 3rd MVA will be? This must have been going on for so long for you.

When I went back the scan showed nothing had changed & misoprostol hadn't helped so ended up having the procedure again.
That was nearly 2 weeks ago and bleeding stopped after a week, I did a pregnancy test over the weekend & it was so faint I've not bothered to do another one so am assuming all is returning to normal. Definitely getting some ovulation signs so fingers crossed it's all behind me. My test a month after the first surgical termination was so dark & I was still bleeding that it was probably obvious something wasn't right - I was still somehow surprised when they said I had lots of retained products.

Really hope you can get this sorted soon & start to go back to normal, being in limbo was horrible so i really feel for you. Here if you need 😊

It's next Friday! Feel like a week is so long I just want it over with already! And I had I hope this time they get it right this started in August!!
I'm not have much bleeding but alot of pain and noone seems to be bothered said I'll be fine and come back next week! I had a negative test aswell!

Jsh125 · 26/10/2022 12:22

Time seems to go so slowly doesn't it. The week between scans felt like an eternity that I was actually relieved when they said nothing had changed & they'd do the surgery again. I was paranoid they'd say there was still some there but not enough for surgery & send me off to let it happen naturally or something.
It just prolonged the whole thing so can only imagine how it's been for you. Got all my fingers crossed that this time they sort it out finally.
So weird that your test is negative & not much bleeding - I guess that's probably why they've been so casual about it & not seemed bothered which doesn't help you as assume they've obviously confirmed something is still there. I think people presume that if we're not shouting & screaming in pain or there's no extreme bleeding then it's all fine & we'll just put up with it.

Hope you can find a way to pass the time as quickly as possible & that the surgery is finally a success. I get what you're going through so here if you need me - it can be a lonely time.

Yeah that what I thought having negative test even blood HCG was negative and last time they used camera led and still missed some so I'm not hopeful haha! Just getting my day by day how long after your scan did you go back for surgery?x

Jsh125 · 27/10/2022 21:31

Not surprised you're not feeling hopefully, 3rd time lucky surely! Really hope it gets sorted for you once & for all.

I had the initial scan on a weds, they booked me in for a rescan the following Thursday as it was their surgery day with the plan to add me to their list there & then if surgery was needed. So had just over a week to wait between scans & surgery but that was because I opted to wait for surgery at my local clinic rather than travel to get it done quicker, they would have offered me surgery after the first scan if there was a sooner date or I'd wanted to travel to get it done without waiting. After the second scan I had surgery within a couple of hours. If that even makes sense!

God it's all so stressful isn't it! Sending you lots of love

Hey sorry for late reply this last week has been awful I had MVA yesterday! Iv literally barley had any bleeding! How are you doing?

heartbroken22 · 05/11/2022 22:40

I had retained products (small amount) after my initial treatment. I didn't want to go through the process again as it was too traumatising. I just waited for my period to come and it came out.

Jsh125 · 05/11/2022 23:18

Hey @Wins22 so glad it's done & fingers crossed it sorted once & for all now. Hope it wasn't too stressful an experience.

I was the same for the second time, barely any bleeding for the first couple of days. Then a heavy ish bleed overnight & then spotting for a few more days & all stopped within less than a week.

Do you have anymore follow up or are they satisfied it's all sorted now?

I'm literally just spotting occasionally hopefully that's all I'll get! And no follow up there happy with everything so that's it now thankfully!

Hi @heartbroken22. I hope you don't mind me asking a couple of things. I am currently going through somthing similar. I started to bleed at 10w3d, had a scan and they said I had a missed miscarriage as there was only a sac. I had cramping and heavy bleeding over the week following. 2 weeks after the initial scan i had another one and was told there was a small amount of RPOC left so opted for the medical management however a week later and nothing has happened. I was rescanned today and told there has been no change but that the retained product is about 1.7 cm Maximum. They have said that its too risky due to the side to do the surgical procedure and said I just have to wait to hope my hormone levels drop to allow me to have a period and hope it passes with that.

Do you know what size your retained product was and how long did it take for tou period to arrive and it to therefore pass?

Also anyone else with similar experiences and advice?

heartbroken22 · 28/11/2022 22:17

I think it have been 1.6cm maybe i can't remember for sure. But i said I'd wait for my period which came 5 weeks and 1 day after bleeding from the termination. Then went for a scan again and it wasn't there. I wouldn't worry too much I'm sure it will come with you're next period. I think they say it takes 4-6 weeks for it to come. I was more worried about having anything surgical and it damaging my insides hence why I decided to wait for it to come out on its own.
