My Abortion Experience at 9 Weeks

Hi all,
I read so many abortion experiences but actually struggled to find many at 9 weeks so I just wanted to share my own experience. I really wanted this baby, I've been with my partner for 6 years (we both wanted to keep it) but we just can't financially afford it right now as we had already planned to wait another 4-5 years and after coming off the mini pill after 5 years simply to take a break from artificial hormones it was a shock to learn that I was pregnant just 2 months after coming off it and even more of a shock to learn according to my scan through MSI that I was 8 weeks and 1 day so literally conceived a couple of days give or take after coming off the pill! So very unexpected and a big shock.

MSI were great, the nurse I saw was really kind and luckily I was able to get an appt fairly quickly (4 days) after the first phone call however I did have to travel 1 and a half hours from where I live so be prepared to travel if you want a sooner appt. I was told I was able to have a medical abortion at home and given plenty of instructions to take home with me as well as being talked through everything and any questions answered at the appt itself.

A week later (waiting for the right time off work) i took the first pill, I had no symptoms from this other than anxiety in regards to the process starting and some sadness even though I knew it was the right decision! 24 hours later I took 2 codeine pills as instructed and then 10 mins later inserted the 4 tablets inside of me.

In no means do I want to scare anyone with this post, I just wish I had been aware of this - I would honestly advise taking the painkillers an hour before and absolutey have someone there with you! I had the most excruciating cramps start an hour after inserting the pills and very quickly became super lightheaded/faint with my vision blurring from the dizziness and my whole body had pins and needles, the pain was so bad. Luckily my partner was able to come from work as I couldn't be alone and after calling MSI helpline paramedics were called and sent to come and assess me. They were so kind and helped me get hold of more codeine for pain management. I had about 2 hours of excruciating pain and passing lots of clots but I did feel a gush and something bigger than the other clots (I didnt look) which I believe was the pregnancy.

4 hours after everything started the pain did die down and it may have been that being at 9 weeks its further along for the medical abortion so thats why it was so painful, but I just really want to advise anyone around this far along to have plenty of pain killers (as advised) on hand and to definitely have someone with you.

Its the evening now and I am still bleeding which I am sure will carry on for a week or two but all pregnancy symptoms I had, mainly nausea and heartburn daily have already gone.

I don't mean to scare anyone and I hope this post helps anyone whose also a bit further along for a medical abortion.

Take care xxx

Your post will massively help someone who is going to go through the process or considering their options. I found MN through google when searching for pregnancy advice and some related threads to my searches came up, and so at any old time in the future, someone will find you post in the same way. Thank you for taking the time to share x

OK so I've also just made the really difficult decision to have a termination. I am around 5 weeks. I took the first pill Monday at 9.30am.. inserted the 4 pills the next day at 11am and right away felt some cramps. I took ibuprofen and codeine and it did help somewhat. I then waited 3 and a half hours and inserted the last 2 tablets. I then started to bleed a small amount along with cramping. Fast forward to today 28 hours later and not had any clots or any heavy bleeding really. Blsa have booked me in for a scan on Friday and am so worried that it may be an eptopic or that it's not worked? Has anyone else had this experience? From what I've read most women start to bleed pretty much straight away and do pass clots. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Lotty, try not to worry, the main thing is that you have a scan booked for tomorrow and from there you’ll get the confirmation/help you need to continue with the process. Sorry I can’t be of more help, just please try not to worry, my fingers are crossed for you for tomorrow x

aw98989- thank you for your lovley words its really nice to read them as this is a very lonley time. I've never posted on mums net or any other platform before but just needed to and hopefully my story will help someone else. I started bleeding a bit more today nothing drastic but definitely a lot more than spotting! Also had some very small clots so I'm hoping things are progressing as they should. Thank you again 😊
