Failed medical abortion at 4 weeks?

I knew I was pregnant before I missed my period. I'm 41 and I have a 10 month old and a 4 year old. I have complicated pregnancies and I don't think I could physically handle another pregnancy at my age, especially so soon after my last. It was a difficult decision but my husband and I decided that our family is already complete.

I took the first pill on Tuesday when I was exactly 4 weeks pregnant, then the misoprostal pills 24 hours later on Wednesday. Nothing happened. My doctor told me to take 4 more pills on Thursday. Finally started bleeding this morning (Friday) The bleeding was moderate for a couple hours but has now tapered off and I'm only spotting now. I did not pass any clots nor did I experience painful cramping.

Did anyone else have a medical abortion this early? I'm so worried that I didn't bleed enough. This has been so hard and I don't want to wait 3 more weeks to take another pregnancy test.

Hi, I’m just short of 5 weeks and started the process Thursday night, last night I inserted the 4, I have passed large liver like clots this morning, no pain or cramping, my periods normally contain quite a bit of clotting too so maybe it plays a role at how much you bleed during an abortion?

Update - bleeding started up again but just feels like a regular period now. Still no clots though.

Please update me on how you are.
i think I am 8 weeks pregnant and may have medical abortion on Tuesday. I feel really bad as I feel like I am ending a life and it’s just making me feel so crap. I am 28, have a 15 month old. Caring for my parents as well as trying to maintain a job. It was very unexpected. Failed contraception, and I stupidly didn’t take the morning after pill as I wasn’t meant to ovulate either. I am stuck. But I know I cant handle another child…feel like it would be really unfair on the one I have at the moment as well as the future baby if I was to go ahead with the pregnancy. My birth was also traumatic and I don’t want to go through it again. But then I don’t want to end a life either. So im so confused.

@sobinski please don't worry. Bleeding can start and stop. Mines was like a regular period too and not many clots either. I got a negative test at 4 weeks.

Thank you

I’m still bleeding (day 3 now) but it’s light enough so I only need a pantyliner

I would be 4 weeks 5 days today

@Kardelen I was 8 weeks and had a medical abortion. My story is similar to yours. My baby was 14-15 month old too. But the problem with me was hyperemesis. I had extremely bad violent vomiting and nausea throughout the day. My partner didn't understand some days. I really wanted my baby and wasn't sure about terminating. I just felt like I wouldn't be able to manage and was bedridden. I went to the clinic and picked up the pills and took them that day when I was feeling low. I regretted it the next day after having some sleep. The bleeding etc was a normal period. But I miss my baby. The depression that followed was tough to come terms with. The actual process was okay. It was period like bleeding for several days then at 3 weeks I got a positive test bled again and at 4 weeks it was negative. But I had to have a scan as I was having symptoms and they can see some retained product or blood from the pregnancy. I said I didn't want to take the pills again and want it to leave naturally. But I've got another appointment this week. Nurse hasn't said anything to me but I've just been thinking it may be dangerous for it to stay in.

I think you tend to bleed more if you're further along x

Kardelen · 10/07/2022 22:05

I’m sorry to hear you regretted your decision, and also that your still going through the process. What symptoms did you have?
im really worried as some part of the day I am adamant I do not want to have the baby, but other times I’m worried I may regret. Especially because I don’t know if I may ever get the chance to become pregnant again. I know it sounds silly, but if this pregnancy was exactly a year later, my feelings would have been totally different. I may have to give up work to look after them, If I was to go ahead. And I don’t like being financially unstable. I have worked since uni, and I don’t want to be financially burden on anyone else… and it’s not just that but the nature of the job is different and I can’t even take a career break which stresses me out.

I just wanted to update here - it's been 2 weeks since I took the misoprostal tablets and my pregnancy test is negative. I guess I bled so little because I was only 4 weeks.

daffodi · 28/02/2023 22:23

@for404 currently going through the same thing at the same stage as you but even less by the sounds of it. Let me know

Happybunny134 · 01/03/2023 00:07

I wouldn’t worry, I expected to bleed way more than I did to be honest I think it also depends on how heavy your usual periods are too.

for404 · 01/03/2023 00:58

daffodi am so worried it has stop completely

for404 · 01/03/2023 01:00

Happybunny134 it's normally heavier than that do u think I should worry

for404 · 01/03/2023 13:47

Today is Thursday though I would start bleeding back but I have not am so worried is just one day of bleeding just one pad full enough for a 4 Weeks pregnancy

Happybunny134 · 01/03/2023 17:07

There isn’t much you can do but wait, you can always ring the clinic and they can send you more pills if they feel you haven’t bled enough

for404 · 02/03/2023 22:45

Happybunny134 OK
