Termination

More and more babies survive being born before legal abortion limit...how comfortable are you with 24 week abortion limit?

I'm quite embarrassed that ar my age I had no clue what the limit is till approx 5 min ago :/

As someone whose mother has had a termination and who herself had a termination I have always considered myself to be strongly pro choice so I'm yet to decide where an article I just read about a baby born 23 weeks going home etc leaves me views wise.

Am I alone on this? Are you 100 percent one way other?

I haven't and the question I was pondering was more about legalities than percentages if you know what I mean.
I'm not sure how I feel about it being legal that late not about whether anyone actually takes up their legal rights.

Why would anyone want to make it harder for a woman to have agency over her own body?

vipersnest1 · 02/06/2022 20:33

@Aspidistra1, Flowers. That must have been unimaginably painful for you.

@Shmithecat2

Because it's highly unlikely these days for a woman not to know they are pregnant before 12 weeks

Clearly in cases of rape or abuse sure if the limit was ever lowered there would be caveats

The women I know who have had 24 week abortions did so because they simply "changed their minds"

That's not what I asked. I'll repeat the question in case you missed it.

What about those women who actually didn't know they were pregnant before 12 weeks? Should they be forced to remain pregnant when they don't want to be?

For those posters saying you’d know by 12 weeks if you wanted to continue with a pregnancy or not, pregnancy doesn’t always happen in “ideal” circumstances !! What about women in abusive relationships, what about teenage girls wanting a termination but not able to seek help, what about victims of rape who may be too traumatised ? Should these girls and women be forced to continue with an unwanted pregnancy if they aren’t able to seek help until after a lowered time limit ?

@Same1977 You say your question is only about healthy pregnancies so what about in the circumstances I’ve mentioned. If the time limit was lowered from 24 weeks should these women and girls be forced to continue with an unwanted pregnancy if the foetus is healthy but their were unable to access help until after the time limit ?

vipersnest1 · 02/06/2022 20:38

OP, would you care to let us know the statistics you are using for saying 'more and more'?
I'm not trying to be provoking, but asking the question as you have chosen to start a thread.
Could you also tell me the percentage of babies that are born so early who go on to live a life without health problems due to their early birth?
It's very easy to say 'I think X is true because it has happened / hasn't happened to anyone I know' versus 'here is the statistical date on this'.
I'm interested to know which camp you're in.

To be devil's advocate there is a video on YouTube about a young girl who was on a way to Harry potter convention and was having a back ache .Turns out she was in labour and didn't even know she was pregnant. If she found out she was pregnant at 38 weeks for example should she have the right to abort it? Surely women can not know up to much later than 12 weeks ? If this is the guideline for abortion limit then it could be as late as week before due date for some

In total honesty, for myself only I am against abortion. I think it’s fundamentally wrong. I won’t go on.

BUT - I have daughters and I haven’t even told them my views they think I’m totally pro choice and really I’m not but I have always made it clear to them of ever they were on that position I would support them 100% , and I would. It would kill me inside but I would . I’d go with them if I had to and never tell them what I really thought

vipersnest1 · 02/06/2022 20:42

And to clarify:
Just because a pregnancy is deemed healthy at 24 weeks' gestation does not mean that a baby born so early won't have health problems going forward.

Yes. Because she should be able to make any and all decisions about her body

Yep because the best option is women to have total agency over their bodied and 0 unwanted children in the world

At 38 weeks it is a gull term.pregnancy and it is a baby who feels pain and is fully developed.Giving birth vs killing a fully developed baby.Which is worse...

It's not killing as it's not alive. It's heart would be stopped to terminate.
The woman will always be a priority to me, a living breathing person with needs and a body of her own.

Dogsandbabies · 02/06/2022 20:50

Abortion at 38 weeks...wow

Better than forcing someone to give birth.

Quite a few years ago a colleague and friend of mine suffered from prenatal psychosis. She believed that the baby shouldn't be born. She tried to get an abortion but as her psychosis started around 27 weeks there was nothing doctors could do. She took her own life. Left two children without a mother. Late abortions are rare but there should be full freedom for women to make that choice no matter the circumstances.

TedMullins · 02/06/2022 20:51

I am entirely comfortable with it. As early as possible, as late as necessary.

Same as me. I've never wanted a nor needed an abortion. If by some miracle I discovered I was pregnant now, I'd happily have another baby. But that doesn't mean I want the choice taken away for other women.

Viviennemary · 02/06/2022 21:03

I think terminations should be restricted to around 12 weeks except when required for medical reasons.

How many women do you know who had 24 week abortions? I don't know a single one and it doesn't surprise me, given only about 0.1% take place at 24 weeks.

Essexgirlupnorth · 02/06/2022 21:09

No one is having a termination at 24 weeks because they don't want a baby. The vast majority of termination are done before 10 weeks. I don't support reduce the cut off to early because if problems are picked up at the 20 week scan which can be done anywhere between 18 and 22 weeks then there will be wait to be seen by the local fetal management team and then results from amnio testing take at least 2 weeks. It would be pushing women into making decisions without all the information.

vipersnest1 · 02/06/2022 21:10

@Same1977:
'I have always considered myself to be strongly pro choice'
'Surely women can not know up to much later than 12 weeks ?'
'At 38 weeks it is a gull term.pregnancy and it is a baby who feels pain and is fully developed.Giving birth vs killing a fully developed baby.Which is worse...'
There are massive contradictions here:
A woman may not know she is pregnant as early as you consider is reasonable to ask for a termination.
Even a baby at 38 weeks may be discovered to have a condition which is 'incompatible with life' due to how long it can take to get full answers. Your wording to me is deliberately emotive.
You are not pro-choice at all - and I'm not just speaking on behalf of women whose circumstances mean they can't support another pregnancy, but also those who have a pregnancy with a baby that cannot survive or whose condition would seriously reduce their quality of life.
Your thread is very ill-considered at best, and completely judgemental at worst.
You have no idea what other women are going through, not their reasons for not wanting to continue with a pregnancy.
I'd suggest you give your head a shake.
