5+4 abortion. Failed?

Medical abortion at 5+4 on Sunday.
No cramps at all although I did take 2 ibuprofen in anticipation.
Only bled when went to toilet. There were some clots at first but noting too different to a period. Bleeding has been lighter than my normal first few days of a period.
I wore a pad today (Monday) but need not have done as only really bleeding when going to the toilet.

I had a miscarriage a few years ago at about 10 weeks but it had stopped developing at approx 6+4. That was AWFUL. Huge clots, contractions, heavy blood loss, completely aware of passing the sac which was about the size of a small tangerine. It happened without any misoprostol needed though.

Can these two experiences really be so different? Or does it sound like a failed abortion?

Obviously I've just got to wait it out until I do the pregnancy test but wondered if anyone else has had a similar experience.

Thanks.

Hi Gina,

I’m in a similar position. I was dated at 5 and 1/2 weeks on 16/03.
Took first pill 18/03 and then two lots on 19/03. At that point I’d have been 5 & 1/2 to 6 weeks.
I didn’t take any painkillers.
I got the “shivers” from the second pain killers. I had some bleeding and very minor clots. Much less that a normal period.
Bleeding stopped after 7 days. Most days it was light to moderate and I didn’t tend to bleed at all at night.
Like you I’m wondering if it worked. I’m due to take my follow up test on 03/04. I’m in Scotland and they recommend doing their test 2 weeks after.
I’m also curious to hear other people’s experiences as I keep reading about people “knowing it’s passed” or having bad cramping and pain and I had none of that. I’ll update you after the test on Sunday.
Sending hugs, it’s a tough time xx

Just a wee update. I know it’s meant to be far too early to take a “real” pregnancy test but I’m impatient so took a cheap pound land test this morning. Looks to be negative. Very very faint line at positive section but the clinic had said I’d likely get positives on a normal test for a good few weeks so I’m now 90% sure my abortion has worked.
Despite not passing much and having no pain at all. The bleeding was much lighter than a normal period but looks like since it was so early there wasn’t much to pass.
I’ll do the official test on Sunday and update if anything else happens.
Feeling bit sad and empty. So many emotions and hormones even though I’d made the decision to end the pregnancy. I hope you’re okay OP xx

Thanks so much for updating. My update is that my bleeding started like a light period yesterday. But still, much 'nicer' than a period. If anything, this experience has raised questions about my miscarriage!
I also feel so good in myself after feeling so sick and I react to my own progesterone and get horribly itchy rashes and they've gone now too so I'm sure I'm not pregnant anymore. Just hoping it's all out!

I'm glad it's looking like it's done for you. Sorry you're feeling sad :( x

Hi, I’ve just read your post and wanted to say I experienced the same. Took the tablets for a medical abortion 2 weeks ago, had light cramps and passed 3 clots then the bleeding subsided the next day.

I’ve had 2 miscarriages before and just felt the amount of bleeding wasn’t right. I rang MSI helpline 3 days later and they booked me in for a scan. As I imagined the termination hadn’t worked. The nurse told me they are now telling women to take all 6 tablets on day 2 as they have realised 4 tablets don’t always work.

I am now almost 12weeks pregnant with twins and booked in for a surgical on Monday next week. My head and heart are completely divided on what to do.

But I just wanted to say ring the helpline and explain your bleeding wasn’t heavy enough (I also still had morning sickness) and get referred for a scan. Even if it’s just to put your mind at rest as the worrying is awful.

Xx

My mind is all over the place and I just posted this to the wrong thread on another ladies post 😞

@HLRed I’m so sorry to hear what you’re dealing with. It’s been one of my fears throughout this process. Are you getting enough support IRL?

When I was given the pills I was given 4 as a first dose and told to take the 2 extra if I had; a) no bleeding, b) only a little bleeding or c) if I wanted to be really sure it worked.

It’s seems that everywhere gives different advice on how to take them.

My heart goes out to you. I wish you well with whatever you decide. The initial decision not to continue was fairly straight forward to me but when I started questioning it it had worked it raised more Qs for me. I think some of it comes down to all the hormones and biology.
Best of luck and love to both of you x

To update, I got a negative pregnancy test and all seems fine and well. It still feels a bit odd how 'smoothly' it all went.

Hi, I also took the pill for for abortion I was 5 weeks on. I had severe cramps they were the worst I guarantee you I almost threw out my husband because I was in so much pain. However im concerned the bleeding was very light I changed once not because the pad was full but because I now wanted to sleep since the cramps were getting better. There were no clots at all, my periods are heavier than this. Its now the 3rd day im just having a brownish blood pinched stain on the pad. Could I have had a successful abortion I cant even plan going forward im so confused. Only 1 pad had blood the rest its just that brownish discharge. Any advise
