Selective reduction

I just found out at my 12 week scan that I am pregnant with DCDA twins. Which was a MASSIVE shock to say the least! We already have a little boy, soon to be 2, and were only planning one more. But it's something we would have come to terms with in time.

However, they have real concerns over the health of one twin. We are waiting for an appointment for amniocentesis have been told to seriously consider our options. Obviously it's a very personal decision but we just don't feel we could continue with a pregnancy in which we know the baby will have significant issues. Confirmation of the real situation is awaited but in the meantime I'm trying to gather as much info as I can on our options.

Selective reduction has been mentioned but the initial info we received is that it must be done before 15 weeks. I was actually a little further along than I thought at the time of my scan snd so I'm currently 14 weeks 3 days. Which doesn't leave enough time to do the amniocentesis, get the results and carry out a selective reduction if necessary. Assuming thr 15 week cut off is correct. This is causing a lot of anxiety because the choices we are left with seem to be to terminate the whole pregnancy or continue and reduce at the end. Neither sit well with us. I am trying my best to take one step at a time but if I knew for certain if there is a cut off I think it would help (although I guess only if its in a timeframe we could meet).

I have seen a few threads on this topic but none give clear information on cut offs. Any experiences / info / advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for reading 😊

Oh gosh I'm so sorry to hear that you have this to even worry about, especially with such a tight deadline.

Have they confirmed they cannot do an urgent amnio given the circs? Could you afford to get it done privately quicker?

Hi and thanks for your message.

Apparently the amnio should be done at around 16 weeks and so I have to wait. I am told there is no cut off for selective reduction and they will have to discuss this with me. From what I've read, once you're in your second trimester it's generally thought safest to wait to towards the end of pregnancy. Which will be tough if that is what is recommended. I guess I will just have to wait and see.
