I feel like my abortion has failed?

Really needing some advice.

I had a medical abortion last week, it wasn’t something I wanted to do but I needed to put my two kids first and thought it was for the best.

I had started bleeding 4 days before I took the first tablet last Tuesday and the nurse said that it was possible I was miscarrying and would pass clots before my next appointment on the Thursday. I continued having light bleeding. I went to the hospital on Thursday and had 4 tablets under my tongue at around 10am. By 2.30 nothing had happened, I wasn’t in any pain and just slight bleeding still. They gave me another 2 tablets to take at around 3pm. I passed a small clot, about the size of a 50p but that was it. By 8.30pm I was getting frustrated and just wanted to get home to my boys and asked if I could leave. A nurse came in and said that they thought I’d passed most of it and to ring back in 3 weeks if I had a positive test. (I was 8 weeks 3 days pregnant) Since last week I’ve had barely any bleeding at all! Another clot the size of a 50p on the Saturday but since Monday it’s been really really really light spotting! Not needed to wear a pad at all! I read for weeks about abortions etc and expected so much more bleeding and clots! I’m so worried about finding out I’m pregnant still in 3 weeks time!

Does anybody have any advice? I know I need to wait another 2 weeks before I can test but I don’t want to get an infection or end up having to have a surgical abortion! :(

Did you have any symptoms of pregnancy before the treatment?
I knew I was pregnant because nuts started tasting disgusting, within days of the medical abortion nuts were fine again.

My veins all over my chest were my first indication even before I took a test and they still very very visible! Just panicking about the whole thing!

Mine didn't work first go. I didn't bleed before taking the pills but it took a few hours to start bleeding, then I didn't seem to pass as much as I'd have expected.

I managed to convince them to scan me again which ended up being about a week later, and there was still pregnancy tissue there (but the pregnancy had ended). I had to have another round of tablets then it was all fine.

Could you ask for a scan?

I was told to wait 3 weeks and test but I think I’m going to call my gp tomorrow and explain and tell them I still have symptoms. I didn’t realise you could have failed abortions

Make a big fuss about not feeling you have bled enough and they should get you in for a scan, for peace of mind or for further treatment if needed. It's likely everything is fine, but worth getting a check up (I understand not wanting to wait three weeks!) x

I was coming up to 8 weeks and had passed two large clots and bled like a normal period. This Sunday, two weeks after the procedure, I started bleeding again and passed another two clots the size of a plum, I also had awful cramps. I’ve been bleeding for three weeks. I took the pregnancy test three weeks after and it’s still positive - they won’t scan me either and asked me to check in a weeks time, they suspect that I had retained products and that has caused my hormones to not drop as quick. The reason I’m sharing is because it doesn’t seem like how much you bleed or lose clots it’s a clear indicator of it having worked - the nurse seemed to think you had passed enough. I’m tempted to go my GP too but I didn’t go there in the first place as I didn’t feel they’d be hugely supportive. Sending solidarity. It’s such a long drawn out process and despite a relatively positive experience with BPAS I wish they offered a scan and follow up in situations like ours.

All my pregnancy symptoms have disappeared too. Although my boobs have gone down even more so since passing the second lot of clots the two weeks after. Xx

@YnysMon20 I’ve had the same thing I was 9 weeks I bled a lot passing clots everything was fine until I took a test two weeks later it was positive but the line was faint I don’t feel pregnant but I’m still having the urge to wee I had a scan few days after my abortion they said the baby wasn’t there and I just have left over clots but what I don’t get is why am I still weeing a lot

Bell2000 · 29/01/2021 00:48

@YnysMon20 I went to bpas too and told them I was getting really weird pains that’s why they gave me a scan

YnysMon20 · 29/01/2021 14:53

@Bell2000 if you have left over pregnancy tissue, which the clots may be, you’ll still be producing hormones so could explain the wee-ing.

Bell2000 · 29/01/2021 17:24

@YnysMon20 sorry to ask would it come out in my next period

YnysMon20 · 29/01/2021 19:27

@Bell2000 it will, so I’ve been told, it can start at any time thought but most often comes out with next period xx

Bell2000 · 29/01/2021 19:58

@YnysMon20 thank you so much for this info

Jemma128 · 30/01/2021 13:54

Thankyou for everyone’s advice! Oddly enough I’ve taken a pregnancy test today and it’s completely negative! Not even a faint line! My only thought is that maybe the pregnancy stopped progressing a lot earlier Hence why I was bleeding before my abortion. So what I’ve passed must be enough!
