I’d been suffering with back pain for a while which eased off and we conceived much wanted baby. Now 8 weeks. Unfortunately the pain returned and now something far worse terrible spasming in my leg It’s absolutely excruciating I’m awake all night I can’t get out of bed on my own. I’ve never known pain like it. The doctors are unable to do anything or give me anything for the pain when I’m pregnant. I don’t think I can cope with the pain much longer. I feel so heartbroken to have to have an abortion the thought of it is breaking my heart but I’m in so much pain.

Don’t hVe a termination yet. Doctors can be terrible for making you feel nothing is safe in pregnancy but you need a proper, balanced discussion about the risks and benefits. Are you using paracetamol? This is about as safe as it gets and should be the first line. You can also progress onto other meds if that’s not working. are you sure it's not pelvic pain? May be quite early for you if this is your first pregnancy. I am currently pregnant and had this around 7 weeks went to A&E twice nothing, scans didn't show anything. I finally twigged in the middle of the night in pain that it could be pelvic girdle pain. Been seeing an osteopath privately and using a support belt and the difference had been amazing. I'm only 13 weeks pregnant so not far gone but I feel your pain.

@Dancingbea thanks so much for replying I feel so alone as nobody really knows and the weight of the decision is weighing so heavily on me. I’ve been taking the paracetamol but it doesn’t do anything the spasms are still excruciating (and I’ve given birth before)!

@Mishmased thanks I’m seeing an oestheopath and manipulative therapist, neither of them think it’s public girdle as it’s ok when I’m up and moving but I am in agony sitting or lying so can’t get any rest. I was tempted to go to hospital last night as it was so painful

If you need to have a termination then you should not feel guilty about that, but it doesn’t sound that it’s what you want and having some effective pain relief is really important. It may also help you sleep which in turn will make you better able to cope. Please tell your dr or midwife you are considering abortion because of the pain and that you need help. There will always be risks Of medication use but they need to be put into perspective and crucially there may be risks of doing nothing That your healthcare professionals need to consider too.

Oh no you poor thing. Mine was bad when I wasn't moving. I had to learn to move carefully and reduce exercise. Yours sounds horrendous bless you. Def go back to gp or hospital physio, there must be something they can do.

By spasming do you mean like cramps @Amymac5? Like leg cramps?
I know it's not good to recommend supplements to people online or take this kind of advice online but you are really suffering so I have to tell you I had terrible leg cramps - not pregnancy associated - and supplementing with magnesium and potassium cured them. Docs are not always well-informed on this kind of supplementation but there must be a way to get more info on whether this might help.
It would be horrendous for you to have to abort a wanted baby because of this, honestly my heart goes out to you. Please pm me if you want or I can just post more info here if you'd rather. There has to be a way to help this.

@giletrouge when I’m lying down for a while my whole thigh (both sides and front) seizes completely and is so painful. I can’t get up out of bed as it’s so sore and so I end up stuck. I have been trying magnesium but not potassium so will try that too

Thanks for all your lovely responses I have been to the Gp in tears and was prescribed very short term dose of codedine. The pain is still excruciating although perhaps the painkillers are taking the edge off. Still not sleeping. No closer to an actual diagnosis for the severe groin and leg pains so it’s hard to be hopeful

Ok if you're already taking magnesium then add in potassium and it might do the trick. I found neither worked on their own but together it sorted me and I've been taking them for four years now and I'm pretty much cramp/pain free, just occasional small bout if I've been on a long walk for instance. It's horrible horrible pain if it's anything like the same as what I used to get, I really hope you get it sorted out. I get my potassium from Amazon, it's Lindens brand, I get their magnesium too I've found it's the cheapest as I take them both all the time. But good quality - it works for me. Best of luck.

Worth thinking you might need a higher dose too as it's so severe. I take two 500mg of mag and two 200mg of potass per day. Really hope you get some relief.

Have you asked your GP for a referral to the pain clinic? They have resources and expertise GPs may not have.

Can you speak to a different GP painkillers? I'm suffering with a lot of pain from a kidney stone blocking my ureter and having a nephrostomy fitted and my maternity consultant told me I can take co-codamol or dihydrocodeine and paracetamol as much as I need to (within the guidelines) and to get myself a prescription. Can also take Ibuprofen if needed.

However I'm in second trimester so that might make a difference.

You can be on prescription strength codine throughout pregnancy. I was from 4m, 3 times a day every day. It didn't solve my problems either but it took the edge off.

Can you get acupuncture? I had bad sciatica throughout pregnancy it was amazing really helped.

@ShalomToYouJackie thanks and so sorry to hear you’re suffering with pain. Still in ongoing contact with the doctors I don’t think the coedine is doing much the cocodamol seems to work a bit better as I still wake up a lot in the night in pain but less spasms.
@Thespottytortoise They gave me dihydrocoedine to try but that didn’t do much. Wondering if it’s only the paracetamol in the Cocodamol that’s working as it’s only taking it from say a level 8 pain to a 6/7 and would expect a bit more

Sorry that’s very confusing as I changed my name to ask about coedine and dihydrocoedine in the AIbU thread. I just feel ashamed of my thoughts and not being able to put up with the pain
