Positive Pregnancy Test After Surgical Abortion

Hi all. After advice or similar experiences please. On the 6th of October (so 3 weeks ago yesterday) I had a surgical abortion. All very straight forward, small amount of bleeding on the day followed by a honey/caramel coloured discharge everyday since. Sickness instantly stopped. I most certainly don’t feel pregnant. However, the test Marie Stopes provided showed positive, as did the other supermarket one I purchased. I spoke with them yesterday and they were surprised as a surgical abortion removes everything there and then, and in addition they were scanning me throughout to make sure all pregnancy products were removed. So, they have booked me for a scan next Tuesday, with the hope I have a negative test before then. Please, has this happened to anyone else? Online it seems quite common following a medical abortion, but not following a surgical!

My friend was in a similar situation recently and was also concerned about a positive pregnancy test.

I had search on google and I did find info to say that it’s not uncommon for the test to be positive post 3 weeks and it depends how fast your body gets rid of the hormones.

From what I was reading it seems that whilst it would be expected to be negative after 3 weeks, it’s not highly unusual for it still to be positive. Some women saying they tested positive for up to 6 weeks (I assume that’s very rare though)

Thank you, that would be a relief.

Just In case anyone were to google this issue in the future, I thought I’d update. I went for my scan today, exactly four weeks after the procedure. ‘Something’ is visible on the scan and I’m still testing positive. The ‘something’ is either a product of the pregnancy that got left behind during the procedure, the start of a very very new pregnancy (very unlikely as been on the pill since the procedure) or a clot which will pass naturally. I’ve actually been bleeding Heavily since Friday so you would think it’s Not a new pregnancy. In all, Marie Stopes don’t actually know what’s going on themselves. I have to return again next Tuesday for another scan, if the ‘something’ has gone, I can relax. If it hasn’t, they will perform the procedure again on the day. They did say the ‘something’ doesn’t have a heart beat, so it’s not the foetus itself that would be left behind. And if it is a new pregnancy it’s extremely early or not a viable one. Hopefully ill have answers next Tuesday and finally be able to test negative.

What an ordeal for you, I hope you get it sorted soon, at least you trusted your gut as you knew there was something going on. Hope you will soon be ok Flowers

It’s frustrating that it was missed though as they would have been scanning you and I assume two doctors? So for them both to say, yep all clear we’re good to go when there’s still stuff left behind, is that great practice.

Poor you OP

TableFlowerss · 04/11/2020 21:17

its not great practice

Georgeoftheinternet · 06/11/2020 20:55

Don’t they say to wait 4 weeks?

I thought they couldn’t see pregnancies that early?

@Georgeoftheinternet They can from day dot with internal scans. Which is what the majority of them are at this point

WeSearchedHereWeSearchedThere · 06/11/2020 21:01

What an ordeal, I’m sorry you’re having to go through this. I hope Tuesday brings a conclusion for you.

Thanks. I was fully prepared for an internal scan as that’s what they had plastered on their webpage and waiting room. But they didn’t do it.

Hello everyone. They rescheduled my appointment today. I’ve been seen and they are almost certain it’s retained tissue. Which means it’s been in there 6 weeks come Tuesday. I imagine that has infection written all over it. They are sending a doctor out to talk to me with regards to my options shortly. I should think antibiotics features on there somewhere!

OP posts:
Fancyteacup · 12/11/2020 17:01

They didn’t give me antibiotics! Instead they gave me the abortion pill to take to ‘flush it out’. The reason I opted for surgical in the first place was so nothing got missed and because I didn’t want to do it at home :-( and now I have to take it anyway. I don’t know how often this happens but I hope it doesn’t happen to anyone else. I plan to take the pills tomorrow once I’ve finished work and deal with it over the weekend. I’m told everything should be dealt with by Monday. It was supposed to have been dealt with six weeks ago :-(

I hope you are ok, it sounds like you have been unlucky, a few posters on here have been through the same thing. Hope that it goes okay taking the next lot of pills Flowers

Honestly, this is what I am passing through right now. I'm so scared, I had the surgical abortion because I didn't want to go through the whole pills thing
