Medical abortion aftercare worries

Hi

I had a medical abortion 2 weeks and 2 days ago (3rd June). I had bad cramping and bleeding but then bleeding really slowed down for a few days. I had very light spotting but then two weeks later, Wednesday just gone, I had really heavy bleeding and passed quite a few large clots. Yesterday the bleeding was medium and then this morning it was heavy again and I had another clot. Its gotten lighter again but I had a small amount of greyish tissue pass. I've had some bleeding on and other over the last 2 weeks that's been like bloody discharge.

I'm worried something is wrong. I spoke to the aftercare and they just said to monitor it and if it gets heavier to go to a and e which I would really rather not do!

Has anyone experienced similar?? I would have been 7 weeks I think when I did it.

I would call for an emergency phone appointment with your GP if I was you. It sounds like an infection which is not uncommon. I had one after an abortion (following a silent miscarriage that didn't spontaneously abort) and like you was passing what I felt were lumps of tissue rather than just clots (I actually freaked out that it was part of the fetus left behind which I was assured it wasn't but probably parts of my womb wall).

Call doc. A GP may be better to talk to than an 'aftercare service'. Hope you feel better.

@thehoneybadger there's only 111 and they usually just tell you to go walk in centre which I really don't want.

I've had less bleeding this afternoon and now it's back to more like discharge and not had any more tissue come out... I'm worried the abortion was incomplete. I just want this all to be over :(

I'm thinking of trying to hold on until Monday. See how I go.

Hi op. I think it's likely that it was retained products and it's all out now. If you're ok now I'd just see how you get on and obviously if it happens again you may need to go to A&E. something similar happened to me with a miscarriage after I had surgery to remove it and a few weeks later I was in loads of pain and passed a big object. After that I was fine. Have you done the pregnant test they give you yet or do you need to wait another week?

BryceQuinlan · 19/06/2020 20:21

Hi OP. I had a termination a similar time to you. Around the 31st May. I was 3 week late at the time. I had an awful lot of pain and bled heavily for three-ish days, five in total. And no bleeding since. I have no idea if my experience was normal or abnormal, but just to give you something to compare with I suppose. I was given a test to take 4/5 weeks after to check hormone levels and to test that the abortion was completed. I, like you, am waiting to know that this period is done with.

Call gp on Monday if you’re ok till then. Sorry I forgot the day and time when I posted.

I had the same worry as you but it was an infection.

Keep an eye on your temperature.

Bloody traumatic having a womb sometimes

Thank you. It really is stressful!

It wasn't large tissue at all but I had heavy bleeding the other day with some big clots.

I had bleeding when I used the tablets but then it was quite light the following few days. And then 2 weeks later is suddenly got heavy with the clotting.

I had some abdominal pain until I had the heavy bleed and clots the other day. Today I have some abdominal pain again but it isn't too bad.

Do you think I'll be ok to wait until Monday? I don't really want to go to a walk in centre and it doesn't warrant a and e yet thankfully. I'm just scared and thinking of all the things that could be going wrong.

I have to wait until Wednesday for the test which will be 3 weeks.

Also maybe tmi but it doesn't smell just smells like normal period.

Honestly sounds like infection to me. Not tmi - possibly important information and I'd mention it to the doctor.

I was told bleeding for longer than 2 weeks was reason to see a doctor.

Nothing terrible would happen before Monday imo - just monitor your temperature and pain levels - obviously if there are big new developments or majorly heavy bleeding and/or new intense pain then act sooner.

TheHoneyBadger · 19/06/2020 23:57

I mean obviously going sooner would be ideal it's just i can totally sympathise with not wanting to deal with a walk in or a&e at the minute or even outside of covid time. When I'm feeling vulnerable, which losing a pregnancy would make anyone feel, the thought of dealing with strangers and a potentially officious/cold environment is beyond me. However I'm told A&E is wonderful currently as so few people go so that's worth bearing in mind

I ended up going to the walk in centre yesterday and it was horrible. Very irritated cold nurse. She did speak to the gynaeo who said it sounded normal and just see how things go. My bleeding had almost stopped yesterday. She did a test though and showed strong positive pregnancy so I'm super worried it is incomplete. I have to take the bpas test on Wednesday. Typical today I woke up with more bleeding and another clot! I wish someone could tell me if this is normal or not. It's so frustrating and scary. I feel really ashamed. Just praying Wednesday test will be negative and the bleeding will pass.

@Violetlilac Sorry for your loss and all you went through. Did the pain settle?
