My DD is going to be having this done. She is worried about afterwards, pain, bleeding. Has anyone done this and can tell us their experience. Also will she need to wear pads for the whole time she is bleeding or can she use tampons at some point? Or a mooncup?

Can’t comment on the surgical abortion as I’ve only had medical management due to miscarriage but she will only be allowed to wear pads, nothing internal.

I believe you are not meant to use tampons due to infection risk. Same would probably go for a mooncup. I hope it goes smoothly for her Thanks

In my experience it felt no different than a bad period. Physically was fine but I struggled emotionally. (My dd had significant disabilities which made the pregnancy unviable.) hope she’s ok xx

I had one at 9 weeks, it was like a heavy period afterwards but it didn’t last as long. I was advised to use co-codamol and hot water bottles and no tampons.

I had a surgical at 10 weeks and 4 days. The whole procedure went smoothly and was over really quickly. I had minimal after pain, it was basically just like a longer period but not a painful one. You are advised to wear pads only afterwards to reduce the risk of infection. I hope everything goes well for your daughter. She will be fine xx

How long does the bleeding last about? I'm thinking it could be about 4-6 weeks?

After a surgical abortion the bleeding should only last 1-2 weeks or so. No tampons/moon cup or similar until her next period I’m afraid, as PP have said while the cervix is still a bit open after the procedure there’s an infection risk, and you can only be sure it’s closed once the bleeding has stopped. Pain afterwards should be manageable with ibuprofen/naproxen or similar.

I had surgical management of a miscarriage at 14 weeks. Very very little post op pain: no painkillers necessary. Bleeding was fairly minor too, lasting about 10 days.

From what I can remember my bleeding lasted about 4-5 weeks. But the last 1 or 2 weeks was very little, old blood coming away

@sharonJJ25 stop trolling abortion threads - the comment you made on one was disgusting.
I’ve reported you.

After my surgical (11 weeks) which I had done in April, I bled for two days VERY lightly but I did have mirena fitted same time so not sure if that effected it! Had quite bad pains but doctors ruled it down to my mirena.
