Hi Star, I've had Mirena coil twice already and absolutely love it. It can give you some spotting for the 1st couple of months but it settles down normally and in most cases women have only a very slight bleeding during their periods or none at all. It last you up to 5 years and take the stress of popping a pill everyday away from you. The insertion is quick and not as painful as you might think. Wish you best of luck. Smile

I have a mirena. For the first few months I had a bit of spotting and now for the last 8 months or so I've had nothing. I have a bit of cramping around when my period is due but that's about it.

What I would say is take some painkillers an hour or so before having it fitted and be prepared for some stomach cramps. My DP had to drive me home when I had mine fitted. But the cramps when quite quickly, maybe a few days to a week at the most.

As someone who's struggled with other hormonal contraceptives, I have to say the mirena has been the absolutely best and I've had very few issues with it.

Hi babycute, thanks for your reply! Did you have any skin issue or weight gain at all? I don’t usually do well with hormonal contraceptives xx

I have had one for just over a year and I love it! A slight spotting maybe once a month, but no periods (I did have it put in whilst breastfeeding twins so my periods hadn't returned anyway). I maybe get more grumpy for a day or so around ovulation but no where near what the pill did to me.

It was a little uncomfortable on insertion in the sense that you can feel them rummaging (they put a local anaesthetic so no pain) and I had some middling cramps for the rest of that day and mild cramps for the next few days. But it has been wonderful since and I shall have another once this has run out, even if DH has the snip as we are almost 100% certain our family is complete.

Love it. No periods. Insertion mildly uncomfortable and cramps for a day or two after but nothing terrible. Way fewer side effects than the pill which I never really felt right on

Glad to see it suites a lot of ppl.. most reviews online are focusing on the negatives. This is the only form of hormonal contraception I haven’t tried xx

Hi Star, the amount of Progesterone in Mirena coil is very small and the hormone only stays within your utetine cavity and works locally rather than systemically. You certainly won't have skin changes or weight gain with this method.

BabyCute · 15/01/2018 22:19

Sorry Uterine cavity not Utetine Grin

The first Mirena that I had (for 4 years) was perfect. Pretty much forgot it was there, except that it made my periods much lighter than before! No weight gain and in fact my skin was clearer on it.

Unfortunately I didn't have positive experiences on the replacements - caused a lot of pain and bleeding. I have no idea how they were so different from the first.

I would say definitely give it a go, it might be great for you! But don't be afraid to go back if it doesn't settle down after a few months - I wish I had had mine out a lot earlier in the end.

I second the advice to take painkillers and ideally get someone to drive you home from your appointment in case you react badly - rather embarrassingly I nearly fainted in the pharmacist on the way home as a result of the bad cramps!

Best of luck!

I love mine. Fitting was ok, but I did find removal uncomfortable (only for replacement as expired)

MamaDuckling · 15/01/2018 23:29

Love it.... totally forget about it most of the time. I felt a bit crampy and had spotting for a few weeks afterwards, but two moths on it is fab. I've tried most contraceptive and this has me feeling most normal and like myself.

SeraphinaDombegh · 15/01/2018 23:38

Bloody love mine. One of the best choices I've ever made! One hormonal pill turned me into a crazy woman and the other wasn't great either, but I've had no side effects with mirena other than good ones. No period bleeding at all. Minimal cramping. Mood far more stable. And five years at a time of not having to worry about getting pg at all! I won't lie though, insertion was jolly uncomfortable. Definitely take paracetamol beforehand!

Thank you all!! I got on well with the progesterone only pill but then randomly started bleeding and it didn’t stop so I stopped it I’m hoping this doesn’t happen with the coil! But I live next to my local hospital which run clinics every week so if it doesn’t settle I can go and get it taken out x
