Please help..... I'm due to have a surgical termination on Wednesday and I'm petrified and keep thinking I'm going to die

I've not had a termination but I have had surgery under general anesthetic. It's fine and you will be fine. Remember this is a routine event for the people who will be operating on you.

Snowtato · 08/12/2017 09:22

Please don’t worry op.

Anaesthetists are great at their jobs, they do it day in day out.
I have had many surgeries including a surgical termination and I am still here.

I hope you are ok.
Do you have anybody to accompany you Wednesday?

You're not going to die. Nobody dies from this.

passmethewineplease · 08/12/2017 09:26

Try not too worry OP. You won't die.

I would maybe get this moved from AIBU though..

Do you have anyone to go with you?

ThisLittleKitty · 08/12/2017 09:27

Nobody? Really?

Maisonsmum123 · 08/12/2017 09:28

I'm 44 and have 3 children and I suffer from depression, anxiety and panic disorder. I agreed to have a medical termination but couldn't go through with it because mentally I don't think I was strong enough so opted for surgical with a general. I am so so scared. I have to go to clinic on Tuesday for tablet and I'm so scared of taking that and coming home as I think I might have a reaction to it or something. And then I'm scared of going in the next day at 7.30am for the procedure as I don't think I will come out alive. I'm so so frightened

Sorry if I'm on the wrong thread as I don't know how it works or where to post this .... I do apologise I'm so sorry

LovingLola · 08/12/2017 09:29

You're not going to die. Nobody dies from this.

Do you want to rephrase that?

Your response is absolutely not needed.

Op I had a D&C under GA after a miscarriage. You'll be totally fine. Deep breaths and then you'll wake up and it will be over.

What an appallingly unsupportive thing to say ThisLittleKitty. The OP asked for support, not bitchy comments, and does not have to discuss her choices/reasons/medical necessities with us. If you can't do that then post elsewhere.

OP, the doctors do this all the time, it's frightening for us on the receiving end but they do know what they're doing, the anaesthetist will be very careful.

Flowers for you and I hope your recovery is swift.

BarrowInFurnessBusDepot · 08/12/2017 09:29

Go to the GP and ask for a pre-med to help relax you. Make sure to let the anaesthetist know you’ve taken one. You’ll be fine. It only takes a few minutes and you won’t die.

HermionesRightHook · 08/12/2017 09:30

And you, lovinglola. You've got absolutely no fucking idea why the OP is having this treatment, leave her alone.

sparechange · 08/12/2017 09:31

You will be fine, and in very safe hands of very caring and compassionate hospital staff

Anaesthetists are some of the kindest of all medical staff and will do everything they can to keep you calm and relaxed

MaidOfStars · 08/12/2017 09:31

MaisonsMum You will be fine. It’s straightforward. If there were high risks, they wouldn’t allow you to go under general.

I’ve had a surgical termination. It will be OK.

sinceyouask · 08/12/2017 09:32

I had an abortion in 2004 by MVA. No anaesthetic. It was fine. They know their jobs and do them well, and they care about you and will do all they can to look after you. The procedure was painful but just as I thought it was more than I could cope with, it was over. The aftercare was warm and reassuring and generally excellent.

I recently was sterilised under GA and was terrified beforehand about the anasthetic but again, it was perfectly fine. Anaesthetists are incredibly well trained professionals. Before my op I spoke to the anaesthetist at some length and she both explained everything carefully and listened to all my worries and discussed them with me in a way that made me feel her top priority was my wellbeing.

You will be OK, op. You will.

Maisonsmum123 · 08/12/2017 09:33

I am really sorry if I have offended anyone with my request for help. I feel I had no where to turn to and saw your site which I felt was a good place to ask without being judged .... I really do apologise. I will delete my post if you would like and find help somewhere else as I don't want to hurt anyone

Hi OP, we really hope you don't mind but we're going to move this over to pregnancy choices now.

If there's anything else we can do, please get in touch.

Anyone feeling the need to post on this thread in a way that is not supportive of the op needs to fuck off.

ZigZagIntoTheBlue · 08/12/2017 09:36

Good luck op. It's natural to be scared before any kind of surgery I think though pp have it right that although a massive deal for you, for the docs this is routine stuff. I'm sure you'll be fine Flowers

Maisonsmum123 · 08/12/2017 09:36

Thankyou to you all for your kind words and support. I have spent the past 4 weeks crying and with little sleep. It hasn't been an easy decision to make at all but I feel that something will go wrong as a punishment.

OP posts:
ConciseandNice · 08/12/2017 09:37

oh hon, please try not to worry. If anything this is easier than medical one. I've had 4 d&cs after miscarriages (same procedure) all under GA and it was fine. Even the pills/pessaries beforehand are ok. I think your subconscious is trying to freak you out and come up with reasons to panic. It'll be over before you know it. Much love to you.xx

ShakeTheDisease · 08/12/2017 09:37

I've had quite a few surgeries and I have the same fear as you about general (it's more common than people might think). I do know it's irrational. Anaesthetists are very skilled and shit hot at what they do (they have to be because of the nature of the job) and the risks of dying under general are very very low. But I do get the fear. I distract myself until the procedure starts with books, films, whatever. Once it's all done you'll be fine. Who is able to support you IRL?

sinceyouask · 08/12/2017 09:39

Tell them how worried you are and they will do all they can to support you. Honestly, the people working in this area do so because they care about women.
