Hi. I'm due a termination this week and I will be around 5 weeks. I will be going through the medical abortion. I just wanted to ask if any of you have experienced this and what/how was the pain? I have a 7 month old baby whom my husband will look after but I am looking to breastfeed once I'm home. Do you think this will be possible? Thanks.

Hi there, I had a medical abortion at six weeks a few years ago. The first appointment/ pill was no issue at all. I experienced mild bleeding and slight cramping. The second stage/ pill was more difficult. As regards the pain this began around 25 minutes after taking the tablets (I chose to have them orally as could not tolerate vaginally so this may have made the meds kick in faster). I had a brief period of vomiting and faintness followed by very intense waves of cramping. As someone with a high pain threshold I would describe this as quite severe pain (9/10) which lasted around 1.5 hours before dying down. Then followed the heavy bleeding. Recovery was fairly quick, I picked up my work that evening, went running two days later (although they advise against this), bled for around two weeks post the procedure which I believe is fairly standard. I am not sure regarding breast feeding but am sure someone more knowledgeable will come along. Best wishes for your journey

I had a medical abortion at 11 weeks (I think the cut off was 9 but the nurses at the clinic fudged the paperwork so I wouldn't have to have a surgical procedure).

The first pill was absolutely fine, no problems at all. Me and DP went shopping in Sainsbury's straight afterwards and I experienced nothing at all.

The cramping and bleeding started about an hour after the second pill, which I had vaginally. I took lots of Co-codamol, wore comfy clothes and had a hot water bottle on my belly. I found the cramps no worse than a heavy period and they only lasted a few hours. I don't have a very high pain threshold.

There was very heavy and unpredictable bleeding though. I had huge maternity pads but these got soaked quite quickly so I had to keep running to the toilet when I could feel a gush. I got through a few pairs of pyjamas that day as well.

If your DH is looking after your baby, will you have anyone to keep you company? Not really being able to do much and having to rush back and forth to the toilet can be quite lonely and boring. I made DH play board games and watch shit TV with me all day then get me a takeaway on the night. I didn't find my abortion traumatic at all but DH's support was completely necessary.

I bled for about 10 days afterwards. The first three or four days were quite heavy and a bit crampy but not too bad. After that, it eased off and was like a light period.

I don't know about breastfeeding, sorry.
