Surrogacy

Has anybody had to opt for surrogacy to experience motherhood? I have read a lot about it and seen a lot of documentaries and movies based on it. But in reality how good an option is it?

Not personally however I know a gay couple who used a surrogate. It all went well, although it did cause some anxiety that the surrogate had to register the birth so technically the surrogate and her husband were on the birth certificate as mum and dad, until the legalities were sorted out.
